Jozy Altidore

Some dodgy keepers in that You Tube clip it has to be said. But in fairness he looks good - However, is he any different to our own Danny Wellbeck ?

Is he any better than Adu, who failed to live up to all the hype ?

FFS, Adu is 18 - he hasn't even had a proper chance to mature. He'll turn out a decent player.

Altidore looks the goods though. I figure he'll leave MLS by the end of the year, hopefully to a club like Sporting that will develop him properly and in 3-4 years he'll be ready for a move to a top league.

I'm a huge embarrassing failure at 25 because I haven't made VP yet. It's excruciating.

Did anyone catch the CONCACAF U-23 tourney semis match between United States-Canada yesterday? The US won 3-0 behind two beautiful free kicks by Freddie Adu and another by Kljestan. Altidore looked very good, as did Adu and they've both been very dominant all tourney long. Behind both their play the US should beat Honduras easily in the final this weekend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F7fw0jW9CQ <<< Link to video of all the goals.

The second by Adu is the most amazing and was set up by a foul on Altidore after a great run that might of ended in a score for him if not for the foul.

So, I spend a lot of time with people who work for US soccer and the MLS. Tonight someone who works for US Soccer told me what is going on with Jozy. Apparently his agent is a total feck up.

Juventes called Jozy's agent 10 times during the last window, but he never returned their call. Juventes assumed Jozy had left his agent and called Jozy's father at home to ask who his representation was. When Jozy found out, he flipped out. He would have signed with Juventes in a second. Jozy plans to leave his agent and jump out of the MLS in January.

Adu also has the same agent and being good friends with Jozy, plans to also leave the agent.

Anyway, that's the scoop, from my source, who works day to day with US Soccer.

firstly they cant approach the player without permission from his club... or with the wanky system in the states permission from the league...

secondly why wait till january as there is the summer transfer window

just a guess but the MLS season runs until November, he might not want to leave his team in the middle of the season.

so the american clubs loose any internationals in the summer to world cups or euros etc... thats just stupid... how do they expect to attract any decent players

The MLS was supposed to kick off in August or September of 1995 and play concurrent with other leagues. But financial and logistical issues delayed the start until April 1996 and a summer schedule was born. I'd prefer to see MLS run concurrent with Europe and other leagues but given the history, fanfare, and success of NFL, NBA, NCAA football and basketball, and even the NHL to an extent, the MLS might struggle more so running concurrent with these sports. BTW, playing a league schedule during the northern hemisphere summer months hasn't hurt a few other leagues around the world. If I'm not mistaken doesn't the Scandinavian leagues play during this time?

you're right, the Swedish season just started like a couple of weeks ago

yeah but i hear about mls clubs wanting to sign ronaldinho or henry... it seems daft that the league is ment to play when the major international competitions are... just seems silly to me

the MLS hasn't to this point but all the other leagues (Norway, Russia, Sweden, Brazil, etc.) usually take around a months break during the Euros and World Cup so they aren't missing anyone.

Altidore looks to be off to Villarreal.

New York Red Bulls striker Jozy Altidore appeared headed for Villarreal on Wednesday, with the Spanish first-division club agreeing to a record transfer with Major League Soccer for the teenage forward.

Altidore, praised by some as the United States' best football prospect, still must negotiate a contract with Villarreal before he can join the club, the Red Bulls and MLS said.

No transfer terms were released but a person with knowledge of the deal said it was worth a minimum of just under $10 million, nearly double the amount previously paid for an American when English club Sunderland bought Claudio Reyna for $5.7 million in 2001.

Reyna transferred to the Red Bulls last season. The previous record paid for an MLS player was the $4 million Fulham paid for Clint Dempsey after the 2006 MLS season.

MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis said the transfer was negotiated relatively quickly, was a record amount for an American and that the league was under no "compulsion" to sell Altidore.

"This was a decision we and the Red Bulls took rationally, with the objective to achieve a couple of things: provide Jozy with an opportunity he's been looking for, and more importantly from our point of view, give us resources to elevate the team and the league," Gazidis said.

since he was brought up earlier in this thread...

Freddy looked brilliant against Spain in his first half appearance today. Probably the most dangerous player on the pitch in the opening 45 (he was subbed out at HT due to a knock, thanks to Puyol slamming a boot onto the top of Freddy's foot)

USA's attack is looking good with Freddy at Benfica, Jozy at VIllareal, and Donovan flourishing under Ruud Guillet.

He did indeed. He's starting to look like the game changer he was when he played for the U-17s. Seems he's developing nicely at Benfica. And now Rui Costa has retired, so he should get some playing time.

And he just turned 19 two days ago.

hopefully bob bradley will have enough sense to play adu. i agree he looked very mature today. much better than johnson or wolff.

Wolff is a waste of space. He always has been.

Johnson lost his confidence a long time ago and hasn't regained it. He also never had much talent to being with. He shoots the ball like he has a pancake on the end of his leg instead of a foot.

It was good to see Adu step up today. I still don't know why Jozy isn't there. I'd like to see those two on the field together again.

Isn't he the gay old guy from Harry Potter?

Or is he the next Landon Donovan?

Hopefully he's not so afraid of actual footballers as Lando CowardMLSian, who made a fool out of himself in Europe before running off with his tail between his legs to be the "greatest American sawker player of all time" by playing against Schoolgirl Teams with David Beckham.

He even managed to chicken out of the England game.

His real career as a footballer ended the moment he shit himself so bad it was dripping down his leg at a CL tie at Anfield with Leverkusen. He's rubbish, and he's supposed to be the very best American attacker of all time.

America produces some fantastic keepers of real European quality for solid mid-table teams.

We also produce some staggeringly overhyped and pathetic su'astars.

Cue Dumbledore f a p p e r y.

Johnson's second touch is usually a tackle.

If Altidore does go to Villareal, it will show that he has far more ambition than Donovan. If he can get some playing time there, he just might turn into a player. Could easily surpass Donovan in a few years.

Christ Donovan was useless at the World Cup. As was our entire squad, if I remember correctly. Looked like a high school team, completely out of their depth.

it's pretty much a done deal. Altidore will spend this season on loan to Recreativo Huelva.

He was among the best players on the pitch at Anfield. Recieved praise from both media and manager. If you're going to attack him, at least do so for things that actually happened

EDIT

Marcello. That clock has run out. Rossi turned 21.

Jozy looks like a fantastic prospect, with my time spent in the US so far I've grown to have somewhat of a good spot toward US football. Was hoping he'd go to England but thought Holland/ Portugal is always a very good place for young players to play. The league isn't good so you get playing time and are some of the best for talented youth. Don't think Jozy has had the experience to make it yet in La Liga, it'll take a few years..

On a side note, Donovan is a terrible player and out of his depth against anyone above Costa Rica. Only looks so good because Beckham is delivering some of the best passes I've seen in a few years. Altidore should of been playing the last two games, the manager knows nothing of talent and how to play people. He's afraid of the bigger teams and tries to make his team revolve around his son who's done nothing on the international level.

Alwaysredwood or whatever the feck the gimp's name is will be along shortly. Donovan and the galaxy are like his love child. Don't try and reason with him using logic or facts he doesn't actually understand football just a poser.

As for altidore spain is prly the right place for him his first touch needs more work and in england you just wouldn't get time on the ball. MLS rules about owning the player are a croc of shit.

In fairness, Donovan is a decent player. All time leading scorer for the U.S. at 26. Everyone is entitled to a bad game or a bad run of games. I agree that Donovan isn't United caliber, but he'd do ok at high midtable side like Everton, Blackburn, or Tottenham.

Of course, having Beckham around surely makes him a better player.

Players the US manager needs to forget about: Hejduk, Onyewu, Wolff, Mastroeni, Johnson (until he finally rediscovers his form of 2004/05)... just to name a few.

It's time to blood in the likes of DeMerit, Simek, Altidore, Szetela (I mean FFS, if you're going to give shit journeyman like Wolff a shot, why not let a young, eager ballhawk go?)... and yes, Bradley. Nepotism or not the kid is quality. I don't think he should start every US match but the side isn't exactly overflowing with class in the central midfield department.

That's only if he's willing to work for his spot instead of knowing he's first choice on a teamsheet, which is the sole reason of him being in the US. He seriously lacks the internal willingness to fight against quality competition. I don't begrudge him during his first stint in Germany since he was merely a teenager and probably did face some bias being an American, but his second stint was his inability to fight for a spot. So he whined to the USSF and MLS to get him back to mommy and daddy in sunny California.

He's talented enough to be at least a role player for those sides you mention but his work ethic isn't up to par for success. I'd go even further and say had he had the desire to compete versus expecting things to just be handed to him on a silver platter, he could have gone on to be a class player. Probably not world class but definitely a good player. He has good vision and is a good passer. I'd imagine someone like Wenger or SAF could have molded him into a man and maybe instilled some desire in him - but only if he had the desire to do such, which he obviously does not. He was the golden boy for the US since age 16 and became a primadonna.

When you look at the number of trophies he's won (although in MLS and CONCACAF, it's still a high number) it's hard to question his work ethic. When he plays for the national team, his desire to win is pretty evident as well. Not choosing to play in Europe doesn't mean he has a poor work ethic on the field. I don't know why it didn't work out for him in Leverkusen, but it could just as easily been down to lifestyle and him being home sick as work ethic.

It didn't work out for him because he has no desire to compete against top class players in Europe. He's so far ahead of the MLS crop, just shows how far below the drop-off is from Europe to MLS. He's in the top 5 players in MLS but wasn't even in the top 5 in the squad at Leverkusen during his second stint. He became "home sick" because he wasn't playing and whined to MLS and USSF. I lost much respect for him. He'd rather be the big fish in a small pond (more like small bowl of water) than fight for his spot in Europe. It's pretty much the opposite of what most Americans strive for - respect and a willingness to succeed. He chose the easy way out. Where as guys like Lewis, McBride, Friedel, etc., stuck it out in Europe despite the odds.

He had no desire to compete away from home. He essentially chose family over football.
