I think he means that the other CBs are playing to try and get into a WC squad, not that he's helping them fulfil that dream. The desire for them to get into their WC squad will make them play better, Bailly won't have the same drive as the others at the minute as he has nothing to play for, so to speak.

According to Jose Logic, Sanchez should not be playing any matches as Chile is out of the WC. Martial should be given playing time as he can still make in France Squad.
Agree with all of this, and I think he is largely seen as a squad option. The only issue with replacing him now is, as we wouldn't make any money from moving him on, the cost of replacing him alone would take a relatively large chunk out of our transfer budget. We're fortunate in the amount we can spend but probably will be working loosely within a budget of £150m. Any replacement would likely cost between £30-50m. Given our need to upgrade more pressing areas, I'm happy for us to keep a hold of him for a few more years. His comments in the interview yesterday were annoying though.

Still doesn't make any sense. He mentions Rojo but why isn't he playing if he's under pressure to get to the Argentina squad? Lindelof is guaranteed a spot in the Sweden squad regardless of what happens but is getting more minutes than Bailly and Rojo. His logic for WC minutes doesn't make sense. It appears to me that Jose has settled on a preferred pairing of Smalling plus Jones/Lindelof and frozen out Bailly and Rojo for some reason.
He hasn't played since the derby game. We didn't play well in the 1st half and possibly Bailly is paying the price for that. I may be wrong but Jose's argument that he's helping players get into their WC squads doesn't make sense for Bailly's absence from the team.

Martial is going to the World Cup but never plays. Smalling can't get in the England squad because Southgate is actually aware of the fact that Smalling is terrible on the ball, yet he starts every week.
He also missed the better part of the season through injury. I think it’s more likely he’s not fully fit and has had a resurgence of his injury or perhaps he’s just not 100%.

We have 5 CB's all roughly of similar ability. When one doesn't play well he gets dropped. He then needs to be better than all the others in training, and/or wait for one of the others to have a nightmare to get picked. Right now we're not playing 2 games a week, we're not suffering injuries so we're unlikely to get much rotation.
Well that would be annoying, I love those two crazy bastards. Last season when they were playing together for a spell it was great. Ruthless aggression.

Southgate has made it clear he wants a certain profile in his centre half. Smalling is one of the weakest in that profile, so there is nothing mental about it. If I were england manager, Smalling would be one of the first in teamsheet, but Southgate wants his defender to do more than just defending, simple.
Maybe Jose sees his defenders to be of more or less same level and just has to pick one of 4/5 options. But he sees Sanchez as superior option to Martial and do not make same decision. But, as you said, I would like to see Martial playing more games atm.

His comments on Bailly are more than fair. I reckon people wouldn't be happy if he just admitted that he doesn't overrate Bailly as half of our fan base seems to do.

Thats completely wrong. One does not need to be playing for the biggest clubs in europe to be playing in national team. It all depends on coach's setup. There are many brazilian players who have never played in europe and have won world cup.
