Jose Mourinho Sack Watch

The drastic decline in the form of the EPL defending champion in recent years is staggering: City in 2013, United in 2014 (Partly of SAF's departure maybe), City in 2015 and Chelsea this year. Players simply can't bring the same, or even similar ability, in the following season and even a manager like Mourinho can't help.

What can be done do you think? You can't just spend big every summer, that's unrealistic. How do you keep players hungry?

We might have been duped into the belief that repeated success is possible in the premier league by Ferguson's unbelievable resilience. People underestimate how incredible an achievement 3 straight league titles are, especially when you're fighting an arms race with 3 other rivals. There's really no other league in the world where a top team has more than one significant challenger for the title every year (there are exceptions, like La Liga in 2013.14, but its rare). I don't think it's so much that something needs to be done; more that we need to appreciate how difficult serial success can be in this league.

The collapses of champions is notable, but I don't think its just down to those teams failing to stay motivated to be successful (although there's an argument to be made that City, at least, do have a perpetual problem with that). But repeated success is much more difficult than people appreciate when there are 3 or 4 hungry dogs fighting over one bone.

There is a weird trend of champions failing to strengthen in the following year though:
- Chelsea, after 2014 15, buy a few supporting players, but no one who fulfils an immediate need and slots straight into the starting XI. Meanwhile, both us and City buy 2 or 3 new first choice players each, plus an extra few additions, and both of us now sit ahead of Chelsea in the table.
- City, after 2013 14, bought Fernando and Mangala from the same club, neither of whom slotted straight into the starting XI. Meanwhile, Chelsea completely overhauled their squad, bringing in Fabregas, Costa, Cortious among others, while both us and Arsenal signed about 6 key players each.
- Us, after winning in 2012 13, signed only Fellaini, while City brought in Navas, Negredo, Jovetic and Fernandinho, Arsenal got Ozil, and Chelsea signed Willian, Schurrle and Eto'o (plus Matic and Salah in January).
- After City won in 2011 12, they signed only fringe players in Javi Garcia, Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair(???), while we signed match winners like Van Persie and Kagawa, and Chelsea brought in all of Hazard, Oscar, Azpilicueta and Victor Moses.
The trend appears to buck after this, as Sir Alex shopped the sales and still won things, while City spent millions and won little, and Arsenal sold everyone and won nothing.

This is the real reason. Everything else is just mumbo jumbo.
Disagree with that. You work Stamford Bridge to the top before Terry's dad stadium tour for a thrifty pump. Then Jose's tight blue sock habit lurches within the top four while Greek super league on no resources. It's clear by now, I mean not, to wherever Abramavich yachts his women and that by the end of the season he'll crush two premier league stars expected to come out as David Pleat jigging across Maine Road. All London clubs will. What can't be denied is that Lampard, Markovich, Wembley Way and Lucas Radebe's got a temperature all risk the clubs future by is that your dad over there, Tim? So Chelsea should stick with though I don't approve of his daughter's party dresses stimulates uncomfortable thoughts you've got to feel sorry for Kerry Dixon, two, please.

Let me guess:

That's the Google translation from Chinese, of a drunk fan's thoughts, recorded using Cortana.

Historically its been very difficult to win the league two seasons in a row, except for Sir Alex of course

Yes mumbo-jumbo.

Are you one of these self harmers?

 No, but I feel that he wants to stay so badly that he can't stand what seemed to be a lack of support from the men of power at Chelsea. I think that he knows that no matter what he will on an ejectable seat at Chelsea. He wants to be in Wenger's position but can't and we can provide him that. My only problem will be that he always play like an underdog in big games.

It's got to partly be a question of motivation with the likes of City and Chelsea I think. Highly paid squads purchased and assembled to, primarily, win the league and once that's done they struggle to keep their levels up the following season. Our ability to win consecutive league titles was, I think, largely thanks to a hugely inspirational and motivational manager allied to a core of local and loyal players who weren't just here to grab a quick trophy or two and a fat pay cheque.

Look at Eden Hazard for a classic example of someone who can have no excuses for his non performances this year other than that he just doesn't fancy it as much.

Well anyone that does, United supporter or not, needs their head examined!
Pretty much every United fan underrated him when they thought that the team he left was top four quality, let alone premier league champions.

A lot still do, he was the difference between a win and a loss, our roster was punching above his weight because of SAF. It took me 6 months to realize that.

Cant you guys just leave him alone?

Didnt he say he had left enough to ensure success for the future

Underrate SAF? No. The fans were pissed off with the team left behind but everyone, including opposition fans, knew he was the difference between us being a top 4 team and winning the league at a canter.

Incredible.

antics aside he's been alright to be fair in a grossly underperforming and underwhelming team. I'm still probably being too generous though.
He's only got 3 goals all season, he's no where near last years for although I know it would be hard to keep that up in a struggling team

this is like when you allow swift key to automatically predict the next word, but you do it for an entire paragraph.

Mourinho, in the space of 2 months, has gone from being the Special One, and Prem Champion, to..... David Moyes (who also didnt fare too well with a title winning team) #FunnyOldGame

I still think it's a blip; a prolonged one but a blip nonetheless. The Chelsea squad has far too much quality in it. They're in a false position and would imagine that come April, they'll be back in the top four. Question is, will Jose be the man in charge at that time?

His overall play and build play has been better then last season. Problem is the service he has got and his finishing has been well below last year.

Only Willian and Azpilicueta have equalled their performance last year mind. Willian has been better actually.

Hazard has gotten better recently and looks much better through the middle. Zouma has been consistently solid, one of our best players. Matic, Fabregas, Ivanovic, Terry, Oscar and Remy have been worse and not looked like imrpoving. Cahill has been inconsistent, going from best performer to worst with every passing game.

Loftus-Cheek, Ramires, Mikel, Kenedy and Traore have looked great when they have played and deserves starts over the aforementioned players above. Definitely the younger guys should play, building the squad for next season and the future.

how many chelsea players right now are playing at last year's level or better? I can only think of willian, azpilicueta, and maybe diego costa and zouma?

Not sure if this counts but Begovic has to be there as well. He's actually been very good.
