(not to mention academy players) who can fill that role - Fonte would be someone wanting to play every week and I wouldnt put him ahead of most of those at this moment in time.Maybe this is right?

Southampton fans have been saying hes been playing shite this season. Maybe cos hes been wanting to leave since Euros, but I dont think we need him anyway. Rojo/Jones are doing great and it doesnt need to be broken up right now. And we have Smalling to rotate where needed and Bailly will be back from ACoN in a month.

I don't think he'd have bumper wages here, nor would he cost as much - he's in his last year of contract and requested a transfer.
I think we'll try and sign him. Ilori and Sakho are both leaving and we only seem to have three actual CB's.

33 years old, handed a transfer request, last window where they can still get a decent price for him. He's not going to be very expensive. 10-15m I would reckon.

After Bailly, Mhkitaryan, Zlatan and Pogba, if Jose wants him I'm all for his decision making on the transfer front. But I think this ship has sailed. Rojo and Jones didnt even look like options in August when this rumour first started. I'd hope we'll wait until the Summer and bring in someone at CB.

I would have taken him at the start of the season. But the way Rojo and Jones are playing there is very little point in signing a 33 year old.

Hopefully he goes to Liverpool, Portugal or China. Not good enough for United and we don't need him.
There was a time this summer when it would have been a reasonable signing. But at this point with Jones and Rojo in surprsing form, Bailly off to an excellent start and Smalling out of the training room, I don't think we need Fonte as a stop gap any longer. And beside all of that Blind can still play CB if we need him to.
He would be good cover, but definitely not first choice given the form of Jones and Rojo, with Smalling and Bailly as competition. We have enough depth to get going now, and should be looking at a long term CB replacement for our next signing, which has to be someone better and younger.

Could be a very good signing, hope we try and get him. For those who are saying we don't need him need to have a look at our defenders, rojo has had a good few weeks which included being lucky to not receive 2 straight reds, jones is currently fit and playing well how long can he stay fit though, smalling is smalling, utterly useless when midfield isn't protecting him. Bailly is off to afcon and his team will most likely go all the way. Add to that fonte has something none of the defenders are capable of which is actually organise the defence and he is a leader, something our defence still lacks.
