Jonny Evans set to sign a one year contract

Last Man Standing

Fletcher is still knocking about the place.

Think its ok, he is only our 4th/5th choice CB. He would take Maguire's place if he stay, or Jones' place.

I was impressed by Evans, he looked nimble and composed on the ball. Signing him on a free on "low" wages makes perfect sense to me. He's better than Maguire, and probably better than Lindelof as well.
Not sure about that, Lindelof looked pretty competent when called upon last season. When not paired with Maguire he seemed to find a very stable level. So I think he'll be third choice as it stands.

I wouldn't be keen chucking in Jonny Evans for a swathe of PL games, I think that would be testing our luck a bit at his age and with the physicality of the game and the way ETH wants to play. But clearly that's not the point of this signing. He will probably only play in situations where it would be a reserve team player coming in.

He'll be dine as 5th choice CB.

I hope it means Maguire is out, for his sake and ours.

It looks like we need his experience more than football skills. Makes sense as I doubt he will play much to start with

Works out quite nicely for us if (as hoped) Maguire leaves.

Eventually we’re going to have to replace Varane with top quality but that’s not for now.

Good deal. Like it. Becomes the 3rd best cb at the club behind Martinez and Varane. Now opens the door for Maguire, Bailly to leave the club.

Idiots will claim that this isn't the most important signing this century.

Did we need someone for the homegrown rule or what's this about?
  1. Heaton
  2. Henderson
  3. Maguire
  4. McTominay
  5. Mount
  6. Rashford
  7. Sancho
  8. Shaw
  9. Wan-Bissaka
  10. Williams
Henderson and Williams won't be here, and Heaton, Maguire and McTominay have been linked with moves away. If the plan is to reintegrate you know who, he would have to be registered and is HG.

Klopp once signed Ragnar Klavan. This is the same (but better). Worried about his injuries though. Even as a 5th choice.

Great news. His bitter cousin who hates him and posts on here will be in meltdown.

I actually think this is a really good idea - he can play in the early round cup games to give a rest to others, he'll be a great role model for some of the younger players, and it'll cost us pennies.

Don't mind it, he's not exactly anyone's path from the Academy.

We'll sign a young CB next summer.

Also true. There isn't anyone ready at this stage coming through and if we did end up in a crisis injury/suspension wise it's Casemiro who'd be used there judging by the Burnley game last season. He's needed elsewhere. This hopefully rules out any need for that.

Lindelof still has a major error in him though. Dortmund's second goal the other day where he messed up his pass through the lines for example. I would agree though, Maguire seems to cause nerves across the defensive line.

Nice to see that we have replaced Jones. We should really be moving on Maguire and signing a young wonderkid type as a long term Varane replacement.

Makes perfect sense to me if we're looking to sell Maguire.

As soon as Evans got his short term contract, it seemed a likely and valid possibility that, if we sell Maguire, we could just keep Evans for the season as 4th/5th choice CB (counting Shaw) before addressing the area with a better upgrade next summer.

Reports he’s getting £200k a week

If ETH thinks he has enough then this is great. Nostalgia cherry on top.

Don’t see anything wrong with this, no fee, low wage, prem experience, homegrown and could pave the way for Maguire to leave.

Don't mind this. Might not play, might get 10 games, who knows.

I wonder what wages we'll pay though? According to several sites he was on £100k last year at Leicester.

Anything more than half that is madness for a 4th/5th choice to be honest, regardless of who it is.
