Jonny Evans is a red...

Really don't understand this one at all. I could understand it if we are letting him join in training and such only. Give him the chance to stay fit, and a bit of extra experience for the kids to learn from. But then actually giving him some form of contract and putting him on the park, for me just looks like he is stopping someone else from getting that experience. And I would prefer one of the kids or a player that is actually going to be here next season to be given the chance.

Only way it makes sense if we are actually toying with the idea to bring him in for the season as depth, which isn't exactly something I would be happy with. I'd always prefer to bring in a young player than a 35 year old stop gap for depth.

To me this looks like we simply don't have quality youngsters anymore. This with lack of striker, winger or any midfielder from the young crew last year just goes to show how poor our academy is at the moment, unfortunately. Unlike some previous recent times when we would introduce youngster over some senior member in the squad, let alone finding some ridiculous solutions like Weghorst, Evans, etc. before introducing anyone.

Have him along for training as a favour to him for his past appearances, maybe.

Paying him even for a few weeks? Odd.

There have been a few of really good quality that have had rotten luck with injuries. Laird, Tuanzebe, Kambwala, all defenders quite recently, MG is a separate issue altogether.

I don't think we hit or miss any more than a lot of big academies, if you have 1 that makes it out of every group of scholars then you have had a blinder.

Nice to see It's take care of our own lads, I don't see any big deal here. He still has big connections at the club especially with his Mrs, the lovely Helen.

I don't know how lots of you are confused about this. ETH wants to have left footed defender in backup. We don't have money for new one and we don't have youngster good enough. So we offered 2 week deal to PL proven, left footed defender to prove himself in two games and on trainings.
If he does well, we will sign him on one year deal. It is pretty simple really.

We just need to make use of what we can right now. Takeover year is pretty brutal to do business when our budget is basically all gone once we sign a striker.

It sucks but needs must. Evans is actually a good footballer for what it’s worth. The keeper will have to be on his toes though if Evans is stood on the half way line

ETH signing Evans to play him ahead of Maguire today to show Maguire he is 7th choice CB. My bald manager.

Who would have guessed, Jonny Evans would be the last every player from the Busby + Fergie eras?

Seomebody would have been doing well to still be playing from the Busby era.

Surviving the Moyes era wasn't too hard as the man dithered so much and was hesitant to make decisions. Surviving the Van Gaal era without getting sold was the real achievement. I'm convinced that man would have sold the entire squad in one go if he'd been allowed.

Never been a fan of Evans, not since that West Ham (Carlton Cole) game, but that said he’s always been very good on the ball so can see why ETH may have had his head turned in training, could be a very good option if we are planning to offload a CB just for experience and quality in training.

Not sure why anyone is too fussed.

He's basically in to do a Huddlestone for the U21s, which is not a bad thing tbh.

He in still on another level as a player to what Huddlestone & McShane were when they signed. If we end up signing him I'm sure he'll be in the first team set-up. But he could also tutor our young players at the same time.

I doubt since he's nearly 36 and couldn't make it into a barely functional Leicester defence last season. I'd be super worried if he's our 4th or even 5th choice CB.

A couple points on this.

We have a lot of pre season games and will essentially need two full squads. With players still coming back from internationals/injuries etc, maybe that's proving to be difficult?

Maybe there's a plan for some of the younger players to go out on loan and doesn't make sense for them to fly to America and then fly back.

He started 13 matches out of the 17 he was available for, all as captain. And all those four matches he didn't start were while he was carrying an injury. So that's simply not true.

He's just here to give Maguire the message hopefully
I think it is exactly this. Personally I would be happy if we signed Evans for the season as long as he is happy being 4th/5th choice. And if he is played in preseason above Maguire then it is a message to him

You just looked at wiki stats for last season and nothing else didn't you?

Do any of you dinosaurs remember his drop kick on that cheat Drogba? Favorite moment by Jonny lad.

Yes it was a thing of beauty.

Drogba got booked in fact after he got up!

Edit: and deservedly so too. Basically went to do Evans in the air, which is illegal even in rugby ffs.

Er....Garnacho? Elanga the year before that, Greenwood the year before that again, Mainoo coming in now, sold Garner for 15m - I'd say the academy is delivering.

My mistake, thanks for pointing out. I didn't see his calf injury and thought he dropped after their leaking of goals (don't follow Leicester).

That's right I forgot about that

The kick, Vidic laughing, then the booking, it was perfect.

It is delivering. The goal of the academy should be to bring through 1 or 2 first team squad members each season to compliment the existing squad. Other players will be developed, improved and sold. Any more than that is a bonus but it’s so rare to get the bones of a team from the youth set up. Golden generations are the exception not the expectation and have to happen at a time when the whole squad needs refreshing.

Eh, no…
Well, a rock compared to the others at least. Other than 16/17 (where our best combo was Rojo with either Jones or Bailly), pretty much every other season ended up with Smalling partnered with one of the others as our best combination. Even when Mourinho tried to use other options at the start of each season to get more ability on the ball back there, each season Smalling would end up being first choice as the others all failed around him due to both form and injury. While he wasn't perfectly reliable he was the only one that word could be used with whatsoever. Less injuries, less prone to brain-farts, less prone to long periods of poor form. All while also having the highest peak.

Aye absolute disgrace Drogba didn't get booked for that... He could have broke Jonny's foot!
He actually did get booked.

I laugh, but as @Eugenius said above what Drogba was doing was actually quite dangerous and is something I absolutely hate seeing. Kane does it a lot as well. Barging into and overbalancing an opposition player who is high in the air and has no real way of defending himself can easily lead to that player falling badly, possibly even on their head. Well, Evans found a way of defending himself.
