Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Fixed, just leave it at that, please, for the love of god.

Criticise him all you want in a different post, don't do both in one. It's highly confusing.

"Gee, that Keane fella, what a hell of a player, best midfield general we've ever had... and he's a cnut and I hate him and his ancestors."

Eh? You can't criticise and praise in the same post? Why not? Please, never read a review of a film, ever.

Hilariously, the quote you made up for Keane is actually pretty damned accurate. Fantastic player and captain, absolute cnut of a man.

I was more highlighting the extremes, but sure, if you think that go for it.

If he was English he'd be kept out of the national team by Lescott, Cahill and Jagielka. If he was Spanish he'd be considered the average as his ball play wouldnt stand out and he's no longer that young.

Like how Carrick was kept out by the likes of Milner and Barry. And if Evans was Spanish, he'll practically be first choice for them, he'll actually give them someone to aim for at corners when their plan of boring everyone to sleep before passing the ball into the net doesn't work out.

Because Evans scored a goal finally.

Pique was more of a threat for United than Evans has been and Puyol scores a lot more.

I was actually referring to Ramos getting dropped with Puyol moving to RB.

Oh so Evans would be good for Spain if their 3 best CBs couldnt cover the 2 CB spots. I see.

As I mentioned Victor Ruiz is just as good. Unfortunately he doesn't play for United and the media havent hyped him up yet so you arent as aware of him as you are Evans.

It means Evans would be at least the second best centreback in Spain

If Victor Ruiz is as good as you say, why hasn't the likes of Barcelona or Real gone for him? It's not like Barcelona has an abundance of good centreback, they're usually fecked when Puyol gets injured, with Maschenaro having to cover for him.

:lol::lol::wenger::lol::lol:

That's for thinking that the media or United fans hype Evans up.

Barcelona only seem to sign midfielders to play in central defence like Masherano and Song. Madrid have two better CBs and Varane.

Its not so much that Ruiz is amazing, he isnt. He's just a good young CB with very good distribution and Evans is no better.

Do they feck. He's probably the biggest scapegoat we've had in the last 2 years

When he's made mistakes maybe. Nani doesnt even need to do that. If it wasnt for United fans talking about Evans you wouldnt hear much about him

And yet his profile is probably the one most enhanced by United and NI fans. If they didnt talk about him nobody would.

He's good with the ball at his feet. Decision making is average, heading is poor and positioning isn't much better. There is no coincidence that our defensive record when a team presses has gone out of the window when he starts.

I'd be curious to know where people rank Evans among the world's best cbs.

Does anyone know how many goals per game we've conceded with him on the field as opposed to the rest of our CBs or compared to the best CBs?

There aren't that many top class CBs in the world today, much like with goalkeepers, so I can see Evans in the top 20 with the likes of:

Vidic, Ferdinand, Pique, Puyol, Kompany, Lescott, Cahill, Luiz, Terry, Jagielka, Pepe, Chiellini, Lucio, Paolo Cannavaro, Samuel, Chivu, Mertesacker, Jerome Boateng.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few as well.

Would be more interesting to see his record without Vidic or Ferdinand next to him. Few of that list and the others you've missed, have played with either the best CB in the world next to them or the former best CB in the world with all his experience and know-how. Smalling looked just as assured in his first season when he was playing alongside Rio or Vidic too. But without that senior player next to them none of our younger CBs look nearly as good.

Because I'm really really bored and don't want to study

He has that great cb aura about him. Remember when we went to San Siro for the last 16 game against Inter in 2008/09 season. I was strangely calm with him in the first team and he was terrific against Ibrahimović and Adriano. Ever since I knew he would make it.

He's very good on the ball and his passing in our recent games has been ever better than it is normally. He's become a goal-scoring threat as well. Thrilled to have such a good and still reasonably young cb who's come through our ranks.

These days I feel more confident seeing him in the line-up. I think he has become a genuinely trustworthy defender. I often feel more nervous about Ferdinand because his lack of pace makes him so vulnerable to players like Bale.

I do think he's due a few really stand-out performances for us, the sort that even the mindless MotD-type pundits couldn't miss. For me he was easily the man of the match for NI against Portugal - possibly the best player on the pitch from either team - and it would be nice to see something like that for us.

I dont think many would agree.

I really want Evans to succeed at United but I think he is heavily overrated by a percentage of our support.

My feelings on him are he is an adaquate squad player, and decent back up, but I don't feel he has reached, or is anywhere near, the level expected of our great centre halves.

I think that's a nonsense tbh, he's had about 1 bad season in the past four. Last season he was virtually immaculate apart from his horror show in the derby, the season before that he was awful and the season before that (at least I think, I've got my dates right) he was a part of a defence alongside Vidic that broke nearly all the clean sheet records there are. This season he's been our best defender, although that's not saying a lot.

I don't see how you can look at a string of good performances over a good chunk of years and think 'squad player'.

His goal scoring exploits have been masking the fact that he is to blame for at least half the goals we conceded so far. Against braga he was terrible in the first half with his marking.

Anyone would struggle to do a good job when your partner (Carrick) keeps fecking off into midfield and forgetting where he is meant to be playing.

I think that if we sat down and write a list of all the good strikers he's played against and not been undone by it'd be a nice list. But if you tried to write a list of all the strikers he's looked dominant against it'd be an unimpressive list. This is because even when he's playing very well and not making mistakes like he sometimes does, he still looks like he's doing just about enough rather than passing with flying colours. I think this is because he's not a great athlete, no pace or power and while his reading of the game might be one of his strengths, it hasnt really improved since he was a young player and it doesnt stand out as being better than other players. In fact thats a general thing about Evans, he doesnt stand out in any way. He just does his job when he plays well or comes a little short when he makes a mistake.

And on the other side if we write a list of all the strikers that have caused our defence problems with him in it or that he's made mistakes against, it would have a fair few underwhelming names as well as the quality players who could cause any CB problems and to make mistakes.

United 1 Gala 0
Liverpool 1 United 2 - Gerrard finishing off a good move, Evans not at fault
Tottenham 3 United 2 - OG(unlucky deflection), Bale with no midfield, Defoe skinning Rio
Cluj 1 United 2 - Evra got skinned and Evans lost out to his man
Newcastle 0 United 3
United 4 Stoke 2 - Rooney OG, Ferdinand got an unlucky bounce and Kightly got off a shot and scored.
United 3 Braga 2 - Buttner beaten to the header, Carrick got caught with his pants down and Alan scored off the cross(if you want to be ultra critical Evans can be given a share of the blame.)

9 goals conceded in the 7 matches Evans had appeared in. Evans at worst at fault for 1.5 of the goals.

So yeah...Evans is clearly at fault for at least half of the goals we conceded

People just can't get away from the 10/11 season with Evans, he is not entering his 5th season with us plus played in the PL the season before that with Sunderland and the 10/11 is the only bad one he has had where he hardly played and think he had a few injuries, He is probably not helped by the fact that was the first season Smalling had with the club and he did great many people decided then that Evans was not in his class and are unwilling to budge from that opinion.

That's such a ridiculous cheap shot....and complete bollocks into the bargain. I would hazard a guess that if you asked Jonny himself he would say the same thing.

I would really like to know what constitutes this. And also how this is applied to said player.

I like how focused and determined he is, while staying calm on the ball. He seems quite ambitious on the pitch as well, always demands plenty from himself.

Those characteristics do not consitute "aura" though. You could say these same things about a shitload of good defenders.

An aura is something not defined by what you mention. It is something that is not visible as such....more an atmosphere or vibe that a player generates. Think of Roy Keane, Cantona or Schmeichel, they had an aura on the pitch......they intimidated opponents....often into submission.

Jonny Evans simply does not have this......and never will either. It isn't something you can really "attain."

You should use full stops man!

That's hard to read

Why not? Scmeichel didn't have that when he first joined, he developed it
