I don't think but the most ardent Chelsea fan realizes he's been there that long. I'd guess 90% probably think he's retired.

This. I thought he was in China/Russia/Qatar or somewhere. He wouldn't have improved United in his prime, and I don't see how he could improve the team now. Would be massively underwhelmed if this were to happen.

With Carrick too old to play every game, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin out of favour (and seemingly on their way out of the club) and nobody of the requisite quality available in January, I can see why Mourinho might want someone he knows and trusts coming in occasionally to do a job at #6.
