Jesse Lingard will have an excellent season | Discuss in his player performance thread

He’ll be useful in pressing from the front, but considering he’s the most senior of our likely front three (him, Rashford & Martial) he really needs to stop up his contribution in front of goal.

If Lingard didn’t play for us no-one would advocate us signing him.

What?!??!

He was brilliant in pre-season.

Absolutely perfect player for this kind of high press...

He is ideally suited to Ole's style and was one of our most impressive performers in our brilliant run (Dec-Feb) and one of our most impressive performers in pre-season.

He will be a regular starter under Ole.. those who don't like him better get used to that. He is the best attacker we have at pressing...
Man which preseason games did I miss?

He makes clever runs off-the-ball constantly. He's brilliant at it. Try focussing on him (and only him) for 10 minutes on Sunday. He never gives the opposition midfield/defence a rest. If I were playing against him, he'd be a nightmare to pick up positionally.
I completely agree with this!

Another thing that people don't seem to realize is that for Lingard to be consistently good, he needs to play in a team and system that suits his style.
I think with Ole's style, he'll be much more effective and valuable as he was to the England squad in the world cup.

If we play an explosive style with players higher up the pitch getting more chances or freedom or space, a player like Lingard will shine.

The reason Sir Alex rated him was because he saw Lingard play his style of football, not LVG's or Mourinho's, in which players like him are dumbfounded.
And Ole will be adapting a style that is similar to or exactly like how we played under Sir Alex.

I don't think he'll be a massive success but he will be functional and useful and at least he provides better mobility and speed than others in our team.

I also think that Greenwood will push him to do better because of the competition he will provide and vice versa. This will help both players get better.

Furthermore, Lingard is a type of player that plays MUCH better if his confidence is at a good level. I think with Ole's trust and support, he will be extra motivated to evolve and get better.

That is just completely wrong, jesus christ. Standards of some of our fans are so low now it's laughable.

Lingard is a mid- or even bottom table player technically. He has average first touch, passing, shooting, and dribbling; he is bad at crossing. However, his physical (agility, acceleration), mental (composure, determination, self confidence, work rate, and teamwork) and tactical attributes are exceptionally good. Off the ball movement - world class.

I already mentioned in discussions that Ole is going to use a hybrid Lingard/Mata 10. Lingard - to tire down the opposition, Mata - to finish them off. Lingard is a big game player, his natural environment - pockets of space between lines. Deep sitting teams compress the space making Lingard look useless. We will have to use a more cunning player in Mata.

His role this season is much better defined, and the team tactics take into account his strengths, so I expect Lingard to do look much better.

He is a bit of an odd player for me.

He ticks a lot of boxes

Gets in nice positions, his ball control is very good. Decent pace and his technique isn't bad at all.

Certainly a player in there.
He just doesn't seem. To score or assist enough.

How is 26-yeard old (27 in December) Lingard “a kid”? In what world? :) But agree with you otherwise - there is zero indication that Lingard will have a good season. It’s all wishful thinking.

He’s young and learnin’.

Your post seemed to have a condescending tone that 'armchair fans' couldn't possibly be right in thinking Lingard's crap because managers his managers have thought otherwise. Fellaini is the obvious counter to that. If I've misinterpreted your point then forget about it.

His point is Fellaini isn't crap either

I predict he’ll still shit his pants when he gets the ball in dangerous places and continue to make “clever” runs away from the ball to ensure he gets as few of those opportunities as possible.

Less than half the minutes is a key starter?

How do you explain this?
What are you talking about?

Rashford played 33 games in the league, Lingard played 27 games. How is that less than half the minutes?

Try to answer the question instead of derailing it.

That sums up Lingard perfectly.

He is very good at pressing, and will be useful squad player at the very least.

Going on all evidence If this lad is a main player for us we are pretty screwed. Remember when guti couldn’t get into the real team or James into bayerns or berbatov getting dropped etc That’s what Manchester Utd should be aspiring to. This season is going to be very rocky. At least we’ve added a leader into the team in Maguire.

Do you lack basic math skills? You said he played 1668 minutes. That is less than half.

Expecting him to be more determined and focused. If he's still not contributing much then Ole should be looking at other players.

Can we stop putting extra pressure on young JLingz please, he's only a kid and the pressure will get on top of his very young and youthful shoulders. :wenger:

You do realise that a starter has nothing to do with minutes. He was in the top 10 starters last season, the fact that he was hauled off so often may tell you something.
You do realise starting 50% of games doesn't make you a key starter right?

No surprise your math skills match your posts, complete shite.

Lingard actually had more minutes than Martial, Mata, Fred, Herrera & Sanchez last season. So, even if he did get hauled off the majority of his starts, he still had a lot of minutes last season with virtually zero end-product.

He played 27 matches in the league last season so i have no idea why you are even debating this...

Which games was he good at?? He scored a goal against Meelan and was absolutely horrible against the minnows from Norway and barely did anytihng in the rest of the matches - we didn't even see any of that World class running from behind he's so praised for on here

As there are eleven players that start football matches and he's in the top ten . duh!

Scratch that when Lingard starts we only have ten players and a cone on a string.

I know you will defend Lingard to the death even if it's patently obvious that he is absolute garbage at football. Is it love?

Premier League stats 2018/19.

Lingard: 27(8 sub) 1668 mins. 4 goals, 2 assists. g/a 278 mins.
Rashford: 33(7 sub) 2343 mins. 10 goals, 6 assists. g/a 146 mins.
Martial: 27(9 sub) 1623 mins. 10 goals, 2 assists. g/a 135 mins.

Mata: 22(6 sub) 1293 mins. 3 goals, 2 assists. g/a 258 mins.
Sanchez: 20(11 sub) 877 mins. 1 goal, 3 assists. g/a 219 mins.

I'll ask again...

To the people who believe Lingard's movement will amplify our forwards tallies this season, why wasn't he capable of it last season?

If Lingard is capable of such an effect on our team, why were their tallies so low? He was a key starter & played more minutes out of all our attackers besides Rashford & Lukaku after all.

Also, it seems to be an accepted opinion that Mata & Sanchez are finished players, how come they managed to out perform Lingard also?

How do you explain this?

There is a player in there somewhere. He has the ability but I sometimes think he thinks he is better than he is and tries the ridiculous.

Also think his performances for England seem better as well which is odd.

I watched all the games and he really really wasn't

one good 45 against Milan and that was it

based on his form over the last 2 years he's a 5 or 6 out of 10 player with the odd 8 - very much like on the tour

Lingard has peaked - this is it and as Bwuk put it so well - if he didn't play for United is he a player you'd be interested in signing - I think you'd struggle to find anyone who would fancy that deal

If United had a dynamic right forward, Lingard's goal/assist output as a regular XI could be put aside because he can press/close down the best, move the ball quick, can link up and start transitions...but until there's someone better than him in his position with a much high goal/assist output or a right forward who has a good goal/assist output, it's only fair to judge him more on his goal/assist output if he's first XI atm.

I've always rated him, but not as a consistent first XI. His goal/assists output isn't nearly enough and without a clear goal scoring threat in the first XI (Martial and Rashford must improve with what seems to be a clear chance now), Lingard has to contribute massively. I say anything close to 20 goals/assist would be a very good season from him.

He is a good player and will have a better season than last.
