He was great today. I still don't think he's good enough to be a consistent first choice here in the long run but he certainly has a role to play.
This is the throw away statements I take umbrage with- I mean wtf else has the guy to do to prove that he belongs at this level? Win ballon d’or every week?

Proving all the idiots wrong who said he wasn't going to show any improvement due to his age for a start. Other people too. I could start digging up posts if you'd like.

You could dig up posts on loads of posters that spew bile, most of them hide their profile or limit their content though

At this point in time he's a very deserved starter. Jose dropped a massive bollock starting an unfit, out of form Zlatan given Lingards recent form.

Silly thing to say really, given he's our best attacking player at the moment.

I'm assuming you think Rashford, Martial or Lukaku have a long term future? If so, other than out perform each one of them, what more can Jesse do to be considered part of our long-term setup?

Calm down, that doesn't apply to you does it?

Can't be arsed debating with someone who randomly calls people idiots.

Fwiw, if anyone attacked him on a personal level then that's bang out of order, like it would be for any of our players. However, his form often deserved criticism. He hasn't proven anyone wrong, he's won people over.

Anyhow, you're abusive and obviously not very nice so enjoy the rest of Christmas I'm out. Oh and try enjoy Lingards form instead of personally abusing people who disagreed with you on an Internet forum.

I didn't personally abuse anyone.

I didn't personally abuse anyone.

I actually remember you, you got abusive before in a Lingard thread. Nah sorry you labelled people "idiots" which is against the rules here. No idea why you're so pent up. Try enjoy watching a player you're a fan of instead of resorting to childish abuse.

So anyway, how about that first goal? Looked like he might have been going for the pass to Mata but oh my days, to do that finish while nutmegging the defender covering him? Most wouldn't even think to try.

I was stunned he didn't start today I really was. He was good against Leicester and is in the form of his life. Bad idea Jose.

I'm not sure which version of you that I prefer, the Lingard critic, or the self-righteous fanboi.

He hasn't outperformed Martial this season but anyway, I didn't say that he didn't have a long term future here; I said that he shouldn't be first choice long term. Different thing.

Yeah I remember now, I got wound up after you said I must be related to him for defending him. Well let's not do that again.

He’s had a good couple of games, let’s hope it continues but stop with the ‘he’s proven everyone wrong’ crap. He’s proven nothing until he does it consistently for a couple of seasons not games!

Nope wrong poster. I never said you were related to him that was another poster. You got upset because of criticism of his performances. Anyhow, water under the bridge at this point.

Self-righteous fanboi. Oh dear, that's the kind of thing I'm sure you've been called before and gotten upset about

I'll comment on players based on performances and I've never had any personal issues with him. He wasn't good enough before, he is now. It's fab dude, hope you prey at the alter of Lingard now like I do. He's boss :D

I wasn't a Jesse Lingard fan. The last month has changed my opinion. I'm proud to say I was wrong about him, and while he doesn't have rapid pace, or exceptional technical play; he has the one thing that I wish some other players had and that is heart. He never stops working for the team and never stops trying. I hope his form continues the rest of the season and the plaudits keep coming, he has earned them with is play.

Today, as well as on Sunday, his shots hit the post and came back. Had those gone in, United would have won. Clearly a useless player. Stealing a living, not United quality, etc etc etc.

Just joshing you.
I always knew he was capable of this from his youth team days. I'm just glad he's managing to show it.
I was getting worried that he may have been hounded out by some of our negative match-going fans.
I seemed to be the only one in my section, last season, that didn't shout for him to be dropped or subbed. (Apart from the derby, where only Mikhitaryan out-stunk him).

What annoyed me last season was when he was picked despite poor performances when I wanted to see Mkhitaryan get a proper run. However, Mkhitaryan has gotten his chance and he's just not up to it.

He's on the form of his career and he deserves to be starting. I was pretty pissed off when I saw he wasn't starting today. He shouldn't be immune from critisim though, and I believe he should take the rough with the smooth like any other player. I thought he should of buried his chance against Leicester but on the other hand he was lively and got an assist.

I still fully believe he deserved criticism in the past for his performances. He was often extremely wasteful and didn't offer much in an attacking sense. He's definitely improved as a player especially his end product and this is the season he's really come of age.

Lad is doing very well and showing the doubters why successive Managers have rated him. So happy to see a player who's prepared to take chances and put himself into the critical areas of the pitch. He has been one of our best players over the past few months. Has impressive stats, despite being disliked by so many fans on the Caf.

You know, in general you watch him and he does a lot of the wrong things has poor technique and decision making but my god is it working for him. Hope he keeps it going.

More Lingard stats, which suggest to me, that his success is due to getting in the right positions from which to score, rather than particularly good finishing.

PL games only:

Hit woodwork 3 times
Big chances missed 4 (all the top goalscorers miss a lot of big chances, anything better than a 1 goal to 1 big chance missed ratio seems decent)
Shots inside the box 19 scoring 5 goals
Shots outside the box 3 scoring 1 goal
Chances created per 90 mins 1.69

Lingard this season shots inside the area per 90 mins 2.03
Lingard last season shots inside the area per 90 mins 1.12
Lingard LVG 2nd season 0.88
Mkhitaryan this season 0.55
Mkhitaryan last season 1.40
Mata this season 0.69
Mata last season 1.62

(clearly the stats reflect the extent to which the individual was playing wide or centrally)

Oh yeah, it was someone else, sorry. No regrets with that incident anyway, it was worth the warning. Feels even better now.

Funnily enough, that person has been very quiet lately.

I'm sure there's a few that have been very quiet. I never believed it but maybe, some have a personal dislike for him. If that's the case, it's pathetic. His football definitely deserved criticism in the past, but other than that, I don't know why anyone would have an issue.

Anyhow, he's been one of our best players this season. Certainly not the most talented but he's obviously worked hard on his game and it's paying off. In the past he was extemely wasteful and had poor decision making. He was never in a million years a winger anyway, and looks far more suited to a number ten role. It's good to see a player work on their game and improve. I never rated him under LvG and even up until last season, he was struggling. He needed a big season this time around and he's really come of age. Good stuff, always nice to have a homegrown player playing on merit.

Seriously? You’re crediting him only 2 games?

Was always a slow burner, and has made the absolute best of what he's got, if only a few others would follow suit..

He doesn't though, it's just this is the expectation of him, I swear if Martial was putting in some of his performances alot would be rating him as good as we've got.

What's the purpose of bringing Martial into this. I hate when posters feel the need to shit on one player / have a dig, just to praise another. Ffs, Martial gets enough criticism as it is.

I don’t know, I think a lot of Lingard effectiveness comes from perpetual motion which dates back to when LVG had him. He closes off space with poor runs, has a lot of poor touches and poor passing and often just makes really poor decisions, he reminds me of a hamster on pre workout, it seems chaotic and unplanned and just frantic but it works for him.

I was stunned he didn't start today I really was. He was good against Leicester and is in the form of his life. Bad idea Jose.

I am Lingard’s biggest hater, but today I had the exact same opinion. Lingard has energy, he runs, he gives a shit - and has scored goals lately - so benching him was a bad, bad idea. Playing with Zlatan and Lukaku against a gang of duds is the most uninspirational decision I have ever seen from Mourinho. He played Zlatan only to include him, not because he deserves it - and that was what I feared when Zlatan returned from his injury. Just like McTominay should never have started against Bristol City. Not good enough, should not start.

He could have given Zlatan a start and still played five in midfield, fair enough.

I believe the fact that Lingard is wanted in the team says everything about the difference between City and United, but what can we do about it....

Hard to see where I was 'shitting' on Martial, merely comparing the mindset of alot of fans with a 'sexy' player v a 'easy target' player, same could be said with many of our players.
