Jerome Boateng to City

yes they are...Jerome and Kevin-prince are brothers. one plays for Germany one plays for Ghana...they are both born in Germany to a German mother and a Ghanaian Father.

I thought they were cousins? Well, apparently not.

I think there are some where you just know they are the real deal. I think when we all saw Messi, Fabregas and Rooney play at 16/17 there was no doubt they a little more than your standard talented young player.

Smalling is not in the same league as Messi, Cesc or Rooney. They are genuine talent that were spotted well before the age of 16/17. Smalling was playing for Maidstone FC when he was 17. That's all I'm saying. He could become a first team player in a few years, he might not. He might become the next Rio...but he could also turn into the next Curtis Davis. At 10 million for me he represents a huge gamble. Hopefully this one will pay off for Fergie.

Errr, because Boateng is better!

He's of similar age to Smalling and is a first teamer for Hamburg, has nearly 100 games under his belt, including CL experience and is a German international. Smalling has a pitiful 13 games for Fulham and was backup to Hughes and Hangeland.

Cheaper wages though, I'd bet.

Boateng looks very good - huge and mobile and looks like he can read the game.

Smalling biggest asset is he is English which with the 25 man squad rule is important.

Thought he was a bit of the weak link at the back- too often way too far inside leaving lots of space on the right (for Argentina). Did make some good plays though. Not sold on him yet but, they may have made a good buy on him.

Probably an improvement on Kolo and Lescott.

Played better today than in the previous games where I felt he was a bit suspect, still he's playing out of position.

He looks a decent prospect for City. I think he looks a lot better than Badstuber, who I think is distinctly average.

oh definitely, I think robben can destroy this guy if they face off in the final.

However, he has the makings of developing into a very good CB in the future.

Yeah he's big, rangey, has pace and looks a pretty good reader of the game, I think he's a diamond in the rough for City.

seconded.

im not gonna go into who's better, but have you lot seen 20 year old Badstuber playing in his position? i.e cb?? he's a brillaint prospect...Boateng has more pace on him...but i reckon Badstuber has the better football brains. very natural defender!

Out for at least a month with a 'freak' accident on a plane journey, stewardess ramming the drinks trolley into his knee

Not so freak if you ask me, I've had them ram the bloody thing in my knee before, problem is your leg space is tight if you're long legged, and they hurtle the bloody things down the narrow passageway

That will teach the tight git, earning 85K a week he sure can pay for the comfort of First Class, let alone Business.

What a really stupid and entirely avoidable way to get injured. As you say, it's no freak, has happened to me too.

AFP: Knee injury rules Boateng out of Euro 2012 games

"The Manchester City defender must wait at least another month for his debut in the English Premier League since his 12.5 million transfer from Hamburg - because of an accident with an airplane's drinks trolley.

He injured his knee in Germany's 2-2 draw against Denmark in a friendly on August 11 and then had the injury aggravated when a stewardess ran her drinks trolley into Boateng's knee by accident on the flight home."

I am glad we got Smalling.

I'm not knocking Smalling. I'm just stating the fact the Boateng is the better player.

Nobody can deny that.

Hehe. It's always a classic when someone talks about how their opinion is fact, usually as a defence of them criticising one of our players.

Not really surprising that Commadus and Blair have made the above posts though, they've always been the amongst the most pessimistic bunch on the Caf. Speaking of a pessimistic cnut

You really are the most red tinted, biased, dumbest poster ever. I cannot imagine the mental jumps you'd need to do to come to the conclusion that signing a German international and a starter for Hamburg is a worse deal than signing a Fulham backup player who actually has looked very shaky when he's played when both players cost about the same amount and are the same age.

I am not in the least bit sorry we missed out on Boateng because I don't think he's exceptional, but he's shown far, far more than Smalling ever has in his career so far.

Ronny Johnsen was never ever world class either by the way. He was a very solid centre back when not injured but that was rarely.

And Germany is a good league.

Actually that was a fair post, but where the hell is this guy these days?
Posting on a Barcelona forum?

In fairness to most of the posts in this thread, Boateng must have looked a more proven player than Smalling when the transfer was done which was when most of these posts were made.

I'd say Smalling has a much higher profile now though and looks an excellent prospect. I would not swop him for any other centre back of the same age.

The former West Germany striker is hopeful that the ex-Hamburg defender will become the latest new arrival at the Allianz Arena, following three signings already this summer

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge remains confident that the club will make Manchester City's Jerome Boateng their fourth signing of the summer.

Boateng, who has found it difficult to nail down a regular place in Roberto Mancini's first-choice starting line-up due to a combination of injuries and the form of the likes of Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards, has reportedly informed his Italian coach of his desire to move to Bayern.

Rummenigge told Kicker: "I believe that there is a chance that we will come to an agreement. We will have to play a waiting game and this is not something which will be resolved in the next two or three days."

City, for their part, have shown little inclination to lose the German, with sporting director Mike Rigg describing Boateng as "unsellable". The main stumbling block is City's insistence on a transfer fee in the region of €20 million (£17.7m), with Bayern currently only prepared to stump up €12.5m (£11m).

Should the two clubs eventually come to an agreement, Boateng would become the latest high-profile signing as the club look to mount a stiffer challenge for the Bundesliga title under new coach Jupp Heynckes, in the wake of this season's third-placed finish.

Manuel Neuer, Rafinha and Nils Petersen have already moved to the Allianz Arena this summer.

Looks like Smalling was the better buy, after all. Who'd of thunk it?

Was a very good up and coming player but man he has had trouble with injuries. Bayern just want the whole German team it sounds like....

Funny how it works out mind.
