Jelle ten Rouwelaar - New Goalkeeping coach?

I thought United (Ashworth, Wilcox and co) would start hiring their own staff to support the manager

Thought the point was that they didn’t want to hire a whole new back room staff every time a manager is sacked. But they’re letting Erik do his thing aren’t they
Not exactly similar, but it reminds me when LVG managed Barca many moons ago. He replaced probably half of the team with Dutch players.

He must be good because the "famous Ajax fan account" on Twitter is furious

Erik ten Hag KNOWS that Jelle ten Rouwelaar has just joined Ajax, he knows it damn well and he simply doesn't give a f*ck. If you have any sort of feeling with your former club you don't do this.
Very disappointing move by him!

Over 1 million views and 8,000 likes on a post about a goalkeeper coach joining us. Truly insane. I don’t know how people can think we aren’t the biggest club in the world.

Burnley took the Championship by storm in his first season, playing an expansive brand of football, but struggled in the Premier League, albeit James Trafford and Arijanet Muric emerged with reputations enhanced.

The goal keepers emerged with credit because Burnley faced almost as many shots per game as us.

The level of coaching turnover stories this past week or so makes me believe that the INEOS audit concluded that last seasons coaching staff weren’t good enough, or at the very least not ‘modern‘ enough.

Yeah, think there was a lot more to the Ineos review that just keep/sack Ten Hag.

Hiring someone who literally just started somewhere else is an interesting approach though even for us.

Remember him as a promising youngster on cm 01/02.

He was a highly rated young goalkeeper when he signed for PSV. Signed at a young age for PSV but didnt live up to the expectation. He became a good Eredivisie goalkeeper at the end of his career.

Where were we at 2 months ago when he was clearly willing to leave Burnley?

Now this will cost us a few million in compensation.

Reports claim he will cost just about 100k. That is less than the average player his monthly wage.

To be fair I agree with you but I have this niggling feeling that we may be heading to those weird Dutch LVG Barca years. The players on paper Cocu Overmars and whoever else? They were good and the staff were good but it just didn’t work.
I sincerely hope Ineos is smarter than that….so far they’ve made almost all the right moves (forget anyone’s thoughts on the manager)…but I understand peoples concern. I just don’t think they’d identify eth having undue influence over transfers as a concern and then proceed to give him again, everyone he wants.

Gone along with Ruud and the other Dutch folks.

Hopefully it was just coincidence that Onana's form picked up massively this season...

Feel bad for some of these guys. They quit good jobs but surely knew the risk regarding Ten Hag's future

Onana improving i'll put on both him and being settled after a year. Let's hope Amorim's guys are just as good for Onana

Am a bit disappointed this guy is going. We don’t really know how good a coach is but we’ve been better playing out from the back since he came, Onana is happy with him, and Jelle had a big role in bringing Bart Verbruggen through. — I think we’re letting a good one go.

Found it funny on the Overlap hearing Keane, Neville and Wright going "why the feck would a goalkeeper need an individual coach. An outfield player could do that job. Its nothing special. Whats the point in them?"

Their disrespect for keepers is as uninformed as it is funny.

Wasted money paying off Ajax only to sack him months later. Yay.
In fairness, Rubin's goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital is also apart of his inner circle, not just his keeper coach. Any other manager he might have kept Rouwelaar around and not upset that applecart, but Vital is an important part of his setup. So fair enough I say.

Lets just hope Onana keeps his amazing form

I think you mean he’s a Vital part of his setup.

Yeah that's quite a poor take. It does astounds me how dinosaur their views can be after being so exposed to the modern game in their roles now.

It’s unfortunate but unavoidable. A shame because I think we can see how much he’s helped Onana since he came on board. But Ruben has to have his guys. No excuses from thee outset. Set him up to succeed. I’m sure Jelle will receive a healthy pay out, and I doubt he’ll be short of work moving forwards. Being head hunted by United is a boost to any resume, no matter the clusterfeck of the last decade. Ashworth, Wilcox and Berrasa are hugely respected in the industry, and them bringing him in, will speak volumes to prospective employers.

I am also sure he, Hake and RvN all knew there was some element of risk in hitching themselves to ETH’s wagon.

Keane especially. Not sure why he has such little respect for keepers.

I loved Keane as a player and I enjoy his comedy part on Sky. But the more I hear him speak about football, the easier it is to see how things didn’t work out for him in coaching.

Are they exposed to modern coaching or any coaching, by that I mean the thinking side of coaching?

Many players in team sports have no clue about coaching beyond what their coach tell them to do, they don't understand why or how things are done and don't care enough to ask or learn.

Scholes always makes me laugh for this. It’s like he has absolutely no idea why he was so good at football.

I mean, he obviously does to an extent, but for some of these lads they were just really, really bloody good. Not much more to it than that for them.

They're constantly interacting with managers and coaches through their current jobs. Either in interviews, post match conversations, match day chats etc.

I don't think they need to be a coach themselves to recognize the value of a modern goalkeeper in today's game and how it's evolved in the way teams play out from the back, with the required skill set evolving as a result.

He likely has little clue and I'm not trying to disparage him. Most managers would fail to use Scholes as efficiently as SAF did, we are talking about a fairly unathletic player with questionable positioning defensively and laughable tackling/marking skills but an absolute maestro in possession. It's actually amazing that SAF made him work in a 442 or 4411 but that's kind of the key, one of the reason scholes worked for United was because United generally used at least one wide player that was very comfortable covering inside and not operating as a traditional winger Beckham, Park, older Giggs but also Valencia and Young. Many players won't actually spot that, they will focus on themselves and maybe their immediate theoretical partner but they won't look at the entire structure of the team. A similar point could be made about Riquelme at Villarreal.

You are overrating the quality of these interactions and the quality of their minds when it comes to think and understand Football. I'm not a betting man but I'm willing to bet that you have a better and healthier understanding of many Football concepts. They know how to play Football but they don't have much clue about the theories nor do they want to know.

Just think about this whenever players struggle or have a negative attitude, their generation of player claim that the player should fix himself up or that some tough love should fix things. The issue with that especially for the ones that played for SAF is that it is totally contrary to what he used to do, he adapted his man management the character of his players. They witnessed it but their brain didn't actually register it because they don't actually think nor care about thinking. SAF literraly explained why on more than one occasion but many of his former players still don't understand.

I don’t think he does actually. He probably thinks all you need to do is work hard and practice and you can be as good as him.
