James Scanlon

Nusa, Sørloth, Haaland and Bobb - there arent a lot of countries better than that (sorry Scanlon)

Scanlon better than all 4 put together and Odegaard

I hope we get a favourable FA Cup draw where we can have a look at him because he has really impressed imo. I honestly think Amorim will love him.

I only ever watch the highlights of the 'unders' games...but I can't understand why there's not more noise around Scanlon?

He looks really good from what I have seen, really natural footballer with a broad skill set. He's outscored Chido Obi Martin this season (who gets a tonne of press) whilst also being 2nd on our list of assists.

Can someone who watches the full games / watches regularly tell me why he's not getting more hype?

I think it's because he maybe isn't the most naturally talented. He isn't a flashy player, but very efficient. You could say that he doesn't have any real stand out attributes, but can do a number of things to a 'good' standard. Perhaps the type of player who his manager will love, but some fans don't fully appreciate.

Spot on. Scanlon isn't very technical, he doesn't curl freekicks into the top corner, he doesn't go past 3 men before scoring the goals. Scanlon however is probably one of the smartest players we have - he always finds space in the box, he always finds himself in the right position - combined with being a very good and hard-working footballer.

He is one of the players I think could go really far - probably further than many of the more hyped players

Thanks for the response.

Interesting though, because I do watch most of the highlights - and granted, by their very nature, they're only going to show the literal best bits...but he always looks smooth and technically adept to me.

Agree though, flashy players with little end product usually end-up being more hyped than simple but effective footballers, who usually go much further.

I am not saying he's great either, just seems odd you here people talk about Bianchieri, Obi Martin, Ibragimov, Mantado, the Fletchers' etc...but never really Scanlon

Seems strange there is not more hype about him on here. Every time I've watched he really stands out and must be closer to the first team than most of the under 18s

I like how clinical he is - you always feel that he's likely to convert a good amount of his chances. And he has a good ability to get in and around the box to get those opportunities.

I guess one main issue I'm thinking about with him is that he seems a McTominay type midfielder - doesn't have any real stand out physical or technical attributes other than that ability to get into the box and contribute goals, and difficult to find a position to utilise that in some formations given the limitations.

If he can transfer that ability to get into good goalscoring positions at first team level, then maybe our formation would be OK for him as one of the two 10's.

Certainly one of the many youngsters who are impressing, and who has an opportunity to make it at first team level. But obviously very difficult to see which ones will achieve it, and which will even get the genuine opportunities to try.

I wouldn't say McTominay has no standout physical attributes. He's a 6'4 unit, who's both dominant in the air and can run a 5k in 16 minutes. Its a pretty desirable athletic profile.

I'm trying to rein in my enthusiasm over the likes of Scanlon, Obi and other academy players being drafted into the first team any time soon. Yes, Scanlon and co are putting in some decent performances, but the opposition is totally different. They're playing against lads learning their trade, not the physical specimens/athletes we see week in week out.

I'm all for bringing them into the fold to get a taste of match day experience, but without the hype and expectation. Feels like there's less chance of that happening now we're into the latter stages of the FA Cup and nothing else that includes comparatively 'weak' opposition.

One of 3 new faces training with the first team today, under consideration for tomorrow with injuries piling up - Ugarte out, Mainoo and Collyer highly doubtful.
