James Garner - Player Watch

I have a lot of faith in Garner. Always was one of our premier talents during his time in the academy. His ceiling is higher than McTominay's. Maybe he never develops past this current 22 year old version of himself, but he certainly was talented. He's more cultured on the ball than McTominay, has a better pass in him, and is more defensively aware than McTominay. He can add goals to his game, just like he did for United's u23 side.

Another good game. But again, he would be even more suited for a more possession-heavy side.

A poor corner aside, probably Evertons beste player today? Played a few great crosses and a few really good through balls.

Lukaku is ticking those exact same boxes. Not many on here would rate him ery highly.
not at all. Lukaku is a globally recognized top player and a household name since his Anderlecht days. And he's not even doing so well this season - 9 goals as a striker in the league, compared to McToms 5 from the midfield. And McT was very much underrated here with a plenty suggesting he's only playing because he's homegrown - so he's proving people wrong, Lukaku is doing fine but not really proving anything after very good time he had with Inter right after United.

He's a bit-part player at Everton despite being 23 now, 3 starts and 3 sub appearances this season in the league. McTominay is a starter at Napoli.

He has been injured. 23 is nothing for that type of midfielder. His peak will be 27 to 32.

If Garner stay clear of injuries he has the potential to make quite a few in this thread look very silly.

Every? No chance. Garner is more talented. Miles better passer too.
He is not more talented.
McTominay like a few players has suffered from playing in a poor United side and a narrative has been built around him.
He is clearly better than Garner (who would be talked about differently had he stayed at United and failed like he more than likely would have)

He was magnificent against Leicester and that assist was as good as you'll see from anyone. Just perfect.

I always really rated Garner right from his U21 games. Talented, smart, player. Glad he's back from that injury. Must have been a bad one.

Being better than Garner is hardly overrated ha
It is overrating him though when you say he's better than Garner in every department. That's just not true. As said before, McT is a better CAM and Lampard-esque attacking box-to-box type player but Garner is a better controller of a midfield.

Why is Garner being compared with McSauce? Totally different types of players.

Personally, I think he is a player worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the season. Talented on the ball and a very good passer. Yesterday he was not only a creative force for them, but also made the most recoveries on the pitch with 8.

He will have one year left on his contract this summer and will be available for a sensible fee this summer. We need more numbers in midfield and have limited funds. I think it could make sense to bring in a young, homegrown player at 23-24ish.

I was annoyed Teb Jag (I’m leaving it) didn’t give him a fair shake. I like the type of player or role Garner has in a team. I loved Carrick too though.
