Quite possibly one of the greatest Directors/Screen writers/Producers ever? Atleast worth considering he is up there and belongs in the elite group. Its arguable, however looking at Spielbergs body of work most likely he will fall below into the top 5 - 10 as I'm not familiar with alot of "big time" directers.

Terminator 1,2,3,4; The Abyss, Aliens, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar are major movies imo.

Rank Title Lifetime gross in North America (US$)(wiki)

1 Titanic 600 million
2 Avatar 212 million (still open)
3 Terminator 2: Judgment Day 204 million
4 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines 150 million
5 Rambo: First Blood Part II 150 million
6 True Lies 146 million
7 Terminator Salvation 125 million
8 Aliens 85 million
9 Point Break 83 million
10 The Abyss 54 million

Won 3 Oscars (all for titanic iirc). Another 35 wins & 18 nominations (IMDB). Has co-developed the 3D camera technology used to make avatar.

Has Battle Angel Alita in pre-production, which was original supposed to be release before avatar until cameron changed his mind.

There aren't many who have a catalogue of films like him really is there?

Definately one of the greats, if not the greatest.

True Lies is awesome. Aliens is his best film, best action film ever I reckon.

Did he have anything to do with Terminator 3 and 4?

No.

He's given writing credits, but only because he invented the characters that were used, not because he had any input into the film itself.

not directly, credited as " based on characters created by James Cameron" for 3 and 4. So I'm not sure why thats on his list. I though, without doing any research, that he owned the rights and produced them but it appears otherwise.

I see Jonathan Mostow and McG are off the hook for their respective bowel movements.

And Kathryn Bigelow has been robbed of credit on a very fun film.

He's certainly one of the best in making movies to appeal to the masses. That's not a knock on him for directing that style, he has said he prefers to make movies for the general audience, not festivals.

Spielberg's body of work is undoubtedly the best since he has been at it a decade longer than Cameron.

Avatar wasn't all that special either. Kudos to him for developing the technology but it will be outdone by other movies in no time.

If all he'd done was Aliens he'd still be up there with the best, its that good.

Game over Man! Game over!! I love my action heroes slightly cowardly.

That's true, none of his work is exactly that high brow.

He is very good at what he does though, his perfectionalist nature helps I suppose.

Possibly because he didn't Direct them.

Yep. Although i'm not really a Cameron fan, didn't really like T2, Titanic or Rambo 2. Also I preferred Alien to Aliens.

I most certainly would not put him up there with Speilberg.

I wonder if when he was working with Sam Worthington on Avatar he had words with him about being in the awful Terminator 4.

I thought Worthington wasnt that bad in the movie, bale was a bit OTT in some areas but thought worthington was spot on.

so far sam has down three movies(T4, Avatar, Clash of the Titans) in which he plays a fighter/marine/tough guy, interesting to see if he is type-cast for awhile.

I like James Cameron, his early sci-fi is some of the best ever made and he can handle epic movies to. However I don't think we are ever going to see anything complex or thought provoking from him.

I don't care. As long as he keeps doing what he does best which is churning out Popcorn flicks that are better than anyone elses.

What watching loads of Irish, British toffs and Gisusajob dying makes him a girl?

No, the fact she's a girl makes her a girl.

...but it also helps to explain why she likes Titanic. Girls like Titanic. It's got Leo in it (oh he's so dreamy!) Kate Winslet is chunky (I could look like that!!) he's an idealistic, spunky young dreamer who rescues her from an unloving relationship by being heroic and having floppy hair (swoon!) and then sacrifices himself to save her even though he could easily fit on that door too if she wasn't a bit less chunky, or a selfish bitch. (I wish my boyfriend would do that for me!!).

It's sentimental old trash. Soppy, unrealistic sentimental old trash. Unfortunately, in a sub plot, 1,500 stereotypes died.

watched avatar earlier in 3D - fantastic movie and the first of many 3d experience movies i'm sure

really enjoyable and not just the effects

Which is why i enjoyed it.

I hear you, but I think popcorn flicks might be a bit of an injustice, he has a bit of a mix and is no-where near as one dimensional as the infamous Michael Bay.

However in response to the OP, on a personal preference list I don't think I'd put him in my top 10.. or possibly 20 if I had time to think about it.

All true, but remembering the days of freeze framing Winslets bazoombas for a good tug brings back good memories so I have a soft spot for it. (Or technically a hard spot)

Michael Bay makes eye ear rape shit. Masters of Popcorn flicks are Speilberg (although he can go serious too) and Cameron.

You're a girl

Well, there is that I suppose. Do any men like Titanic? (well my cousin likes it, but then again he is gay). I'm just well into the actual story of the Titanic and I think Cameron did a fantastic job on the film. Yes, at the time Leo was dreamy (not so much now) but I just loved everything about the movie. The story, the effects, the music - it all fitted together perfectly. For a film to be 3 and half hours long yet still keep me interested is pretty good. I normally don't like long films (I fell asleep during Pearl Harbour it was so long) but I just was enthralled watching Titanic. I've seen it so many times but still every so often, I like to put it on and watch the whole thing and it never tires on me. It'll be the 100th anniversary in a few years time, Belfast will be jam packed I'm sure of Titanic lovers.
