I knew for definite he wanted to leave immediately after the European Cup final in Moscow through my contacts. I was also staying in the same hotel and it was an open secret amongst the players and staff. However, Sir Alex persuaded him to stay for an extra year after the final. It was nothing to do with his injury. I spoke to Roman Abramovich on the phone whilst in Moscow and sang Viva Ronaldo jokingly. He also confirmed Ronaldo had a wish to leave.If I recall correctly he also went through a surgery in the summer and missed Aug - Sep due to a fractured knee. That might have played into his decision to stay put for another year

Yeah exactly, reasons precisely like this are why transfers of this size can take so long to conclude.
When we are sat here every day it seems ridiculous that it should take this long, but in reality there are valid reasons why.
