Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

I think people forget how much we've gone for those cheaper under the radar players and how often they've been duds. Our best buys have been the ones where we spend a good amount on young talent.

De Gea - Highest transfer fee for a teenage gk at time of purchase
Martial - Highest transfer fee for teenage player at time of purchase
Shaw - Highest transfer fee for teenage defender at time of purchase
Pogba - Highest transfer fee at time of purchase

Now people have a right to not like those mentioned players, but objectively they've been our most successful buys.
Yeah, but not investing in the rest of the team around them (because the higher-ups would prefer to buy few expensive players) currently has us in a situation where de Gea's leaving within a year and Pogba might be leaving this year already due to poor team performance and inability to challenge for honours. Investing in young talent is a solid strategy, but not when investing in that talent heavily restricts our options in the transfer market. Sancho's going for closer to £150m than £100m IMO, so given a £200m budget there's not going to be much left to strengthen the rest of the first team, which we all agree has many weak points.

To reiterate my point, say that we buy Sancho and Koulibaly this year, barely scrape fourth and Pogba/De Gea leave due to lack of trophies. We're going to have to spend a part of next year's budget to replace de Gea if he goes on a free, while Pogba's transfer fee will probably be enough to buy his replacement. At that point, we'll probably get one more marquee player in. So we'll have sorted out CB/RW/Marquee player's position at that point, but we'd still be a CDM/CM/RB short from today's requirements. With that strategy, we still wouldn't have addressed the fact that Martial doesn't seem to live up to the hype and that Rashford isn't as good as he thinks he is.
Do you think that we would challenge for anything other than top 4 at that point? And if all this happens, do you think that Sancho won't be looking at his options if Real/Barca come calling?

For everyone saying that "Well we're only buying Freds and Mkhitaryans!!", that's a scouting issue and not a monetary issue. We could've had Fernandinho and Sané instead of those two, so it's not that we have to pay more, we need to identify better targets with a particular playing style in mind.

It's imperative that we sign a number of players (minimum of 4) this season to really remove the obvious weak points in the first team, and any marquee players should be on top of that with money recouped from sales. I wouldn't mind us signing Sancho at all because he seems like just the right player for that position, but if we're still playing the chuckle brothers at CB, Matic in CDM, Young at RB (let's be realistic, there's a reason Dalot's not displaced him from the position) and McTominay/Fred for the last midfield position, then a right winger is not magically going to transform our team from a sixth-placed team to title contenders. In fact, if we do the slow approach, then the world beaters are going to leave us before the transition is complete, and we'll be back where we started, just like what's happening with Pogba right now.

Ball from Reus was over the line too. Would be amazing if Bayern lose and that goal wins them the title.

The impressive (or damning depending on your perspective) is the likes of Rashford and Lingard probably wouldn't have scored that

Cant believe BVB choked again they had a huge lead like 3-4 months ago. With Bayern set to spend massive this window, cant see BVB getting near the title for a couple of seasons.

A lot of talk about him not wanting to join us without CL.

However, on the flip side. He could have a chance of winning an European cup next season, in the EL.

I'm not trying to downplay the draw of the CL, but what would ultimately be more revered by Sancho:

Playing in group stages and maybe getting knocked out in last 16, or... having a good crack at winning (granted the lesser of the two) a European cup.

I'm not sure of the answer myself but to me, being in the EL isn't necessarily the worst position to be in, at least to the extent it is made out to be.

Dortmund could win the UCL if they keep progressing, Spurs are in the final.
They could also win the league next season if they keep progressing.

Your post is hilarious, sit the feck down. They talk big about him in Germany(where he actually plays), so is it just in France ye’re all retarded? French people praising French players, shocker! Mbappe & Dembele aren’t the only talented wingers in the world you pretentious baguette.
 how did I miss this? Post of the year candidate.

I think with Madrid due to strengthen, Juve looking to, PSG can't have another year like that. Together with (hate to admit it) Citeh, Liverpoo and Spurs, Dortmund chance in UCL is tough.

They might go for the league again I agree, but I was referring to his supposed "wants to play in the UCL" quotes.

That assumes none of the other top teams progress as well. Very slim chance.

Think they'll be miles off in the league next year too. Bayern will strengthen this summer and they won't have a nightmare start to their season again. Dortmund will be shopping around in the bargain bucket again this summer.

I agree entirely as I think Bayern will be too strong, but I was just trying to draw conclusion to the UCL comments we see every year

No it assumes its a cup competition and they are a good side. Look at Spurs this season. They certainly wouldn't be favourites but they have a chance

Spurs made easy work of them to be fair. Of course they could get a kind draw and lucky run but its highly unlikely.

I thought that actually it was closer than the scoreline suggested. Especially the first half in Dortmund. Again though this team is young and if they keep it together and add a few pieces, you would expect them to progress and be better next season.

Similar to Spurs last season vs this.

I think if we can keep Pogba, he’ll be keen to join us as he will be more convinced that we can turn it around. And also if we can somehow bring another top player, the 50:50 might end up become 75:25.

The problem with Pogba is that if doesn't go the way he wants it to go, he looks like he can give an even more negative affect.
The likelihood we will be at the standard he wants isn't too high and I'm worried he will make it worse if it doesn't pick up

If Barca, Real,PSG, Juve, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern don't want him and they want to sell for a decent fee that we will pay, then that will go up to about 90

Not happening and don't want at the moment. 100m is way too much for someone whose not in the superstar category or someone whose not a game changer.

He’s had a great season and it would probably make more sense for him to stay one more year and build upon that then reassess his options next summer.

You don’t leave a good thing for us when we’re this much of a shit show. Plus he could have his pick of Barcelona, Madrid and United next season. Not good news for us but he’d probably prefer more options.

The thing I worry most about is that we've got way too many divas in our team. Pogba, Rashford, Martial to name a few. Rashford hasn't done jackshit for us yet but has developed an arrogance about himself which is not very endearing. With a price tag of 100m and coming to a team that we are right now, Sancho will walk into our team thinking he's the best thing since sliced bread and have a diva attitude about himself as well. This is just my opinion.... He may behave the exact opposite for all you know.

Think it’s harsh to call Rashford a diva when he’s never said or done anything publicly to suggest he has a mentality issue. He shoots from distance often but I honestly can’t blame him if you’re stuck up there on your own and your teams mates won’t cross the half way line to help you out.

Sancho seems to hang out with Rashford and Lingard in the England camp, so we should exploit that link if possible before Jesse gets moved on.

We need leaders in the team and a strong dressing room. Players that will remind him and this lot we currently have they’re won nothing yet. Once we address that issue we’ll get more out of our current team also.

This thread doesn't seem to ever have any actually updates. Can't all the pointless discussion happen in some other thread?

I"m not sure how true but there have been rumors that Rashford has been stalling on his new contract and his contract demands have increased to about 200k/ week which I don't think he's worth. At best, I would pay him 120k especially judging how terrible and unreliable he's been in front of goal. Either way, he and his agent should have sorted the contract issue well before the season entered. That's just one more thing that Woodward needs to deal with and we all know how incompetent he is at his job.

Jesse is no better than Gibson and Cleverly and he roams around OT thinking he's the shizzz.... He takes us the starting spot and absolutely contributes nothing. For me, Lingard is nothing more than a reserve team player for me. Yes, he's produced some moments of brilliance but he's not even worthy to lace the shoes of Park. That's the problem over here with us expecting to attract players based on camaraderie which is absolute crap. Sancho won't come here especially after he's seen how Rashford and Lingard have played all season. Can you imagine how frustrated you would be be as a winger when the striker does not put the chances away?

I do agree wholeheartedly that we need leaders in the dressing room to keep clowns like Jesse in check. We've become a team where we lack discipline, determination and just out of ideas. We need about two to three leaders in the dressing room to bring out that fighting spirit.

Let’s see with much better players, Pogba might be able pick up his “shites” or things. Sancho and another new top player plus good centre back may be we will see a sign of improvement in our squad which give positive to others, players will be happy that we keep our standard high & they will perform to makes the manager happy as well.

The cost of him being 100m fees is more towards a long term services & players that we can build around for future.

  • It's foolish to keep chasing superstars as if that guarantees success. Seems we've learnt nothing from the past 6 years.
  • He's not a game changer who regularly changes changes. Good one.

We are struggling to develop our highly talented youngsters right now, what's adding another one going to help with?

What's the point of chasing this when Dortmund made it abundantly clear he wouldn't be sold this summer? If there's one player that can be gotten that's as good as Sancho, it's probably Felix. Might as well put this thread on ice until next summer, I can't see Sancho pulling a Dembele this summer, especially to come here.

You can play both in one team anyway. Felix appears to be a good fit for a false 9.

If you could get both, it'd be a hell of a foundation for the future, and I agree about Felix as a false 9, I just think only he has a chance to be gotten this summer and Sancho won't be going anywhere for the moment.

Not seen it posted but Sancho said "Next season our target is to win, not come second".

Sounds like he's committed to another season and why not.

I would add Havertz and Jovic.
