The entire world is going into lockdown again. Consequences for football will be dire. The two biggest clubs outside England are already fecked.

Can see transfer fees coming down big-time next summer.
 
So in the space of half a season, Dortmund have beaten us to two hugely promising prospects we were sure we were signing and stopped us from taking one of their first XI players who by all accounts really wanted to join, and in the process managed to not only bolster their standing as a respectable well run club, keep the player-in-question happy by seeming honest and open about letting him leave, allowing the blame for it's failure to be entirely on us, but also show us up to be a bunch of arrogant incompetent blow hards who wasted an entire transfer window trying to double bluff them. badly, for seemingly our only solitary transfer target.

Fair fecking play to them. The posters in this thread ranting about arrogant Dortmund/German fans have had an absolute mare here. If this was conkers rules, we'd all support Dortmund now, 'cos they have absolutely spanked us.

I don't want to rub it in but this outcome was entirely predictable after 10th August.
 
Will be interesting to see how he performs this season. I see Dortmund thinks his pricetag can only go higher than €120m upfront. Well, I wouldn’t think so with covid being around for another year.
 
Why would Sancho come here next summer? There is not a donkeys hope in hell that he comes here next summer.

Ed and co really excelled theirselves in this window.

Yeah this is off for good. Will be surprised if he ever plays for us.

Chelsea or Madrid next summer. I'll bet more on Madrid.

They knew they had a dual on their hands because once he started playing again this season and is back up to speed, this time next year with a different market and different valuation, United will have to pay £120m for the kid.

I've got no idea how you can't get a deal over the line of that magnitude if you are Man United - one of the biggest clubs in the world. There are enough players in that United squad to generate a little bit of money - I'm talking £10-£15m - to make up the difference for the Sancho deal."

If that was the case, Sancho has every right to be pissed off knowing that Utd were willing to pay what Dortmund wanted but were trying to low ball them first. Utd playing poker and losing cost him his much desired move to the Premier league and Utd. I wouldn’t be surprised if his desire to join has reduced.

Or Sancho should be pissed at Dortmund for imposing an unrealistic super early deadline to do the deal.

Thats completely ignoring the precedent of literally every transfer ever where the buying club has every right to test a selling clubs resolve. We did the same with Porto and ended up paying about 60% of the asking price. This idea that a club sets a price and thats that goes against half a century of evidence to the contrary.

I still reckon that Dortmund will be disappointed that they’ve over played their hand and missed out on a huge transfer fee because the state of football finances suggests they certainly won’t get it next year.
 
But without this smokescreen would we have been able to bring in Cavani on a free, Telles entering the last year of his contract and Diego Forlan's protégé? I think not. Winners.
 
It's ridiculous we have BBC pundits slating us for not paying £110m for Sancho. If we had, we'd have been carpeted too.

I agree with this. There's no certainty that Dortmund will get 108 million GBP or above, next summer or after. I'm not saying that the board/club doesn't deserve blame for the mistakes made this transfer window, but there was valid reasoning behind not immediately succumbing to Dortmund's deadline/demands. The club had a right to try to negotiate as 108 million GBP for Sancho is an insanely high fee in this climate.

Why would he come this year?
 
It’s been the most boring “saga” ever. Literally no fun or twists or anything. I think Sancho potentially could be great but in our team with that price tag his performances would be more likely to resemble his England ones rather then Dortmund’s.

The misconception was, and with you obviously still is, that BD wanted to sell him. They didn't, at least not this summer. They had an agreement with Sancho that he could leave under specific circumstances. Once these weren't met, they called it off. Obviously, Ed, as all the muppets here, refused to understand this. Instead, he played an imaginary game of chicken, hoping for Dortmund's call like Trump was hoping for Covid to go away.
 
If he was really arsed to come then he knew the drill - both Dembele and Aubameang worked their way out - should have thrown his toys out of the pram and made a scene.....was he really that bothered? Not sure......

There's a difference between buying a player that a club wants to sell (Porto had to sell or they'd lose him for free next season) and one who doesn't. The Sancho deal was more like when we sold Ronaldo - Real either stepped up and paid what we wanted or they could feck off. I do think how early they set the deadline was a bit ridiculous, but even that was somewhat understandable considering they were about to start their preseason games.

I do agree that they may end up regretting it though if things go south for everyone.
