I assume it's mainly to help with the homegrown quota too.

Don’t we have a young and regular goalkeeper in the U23s? Is he not good enough to be the third goalkeeper for the first team?

I've always rated this guy although I have to admit didn't realise he was still playing!

Always interesting to go back to the old threads to see what people were saying 5 years ago. Few thought he'd be amazing, some said he'd be England's no.1. @Samid said he had enormous potential.

Sadly nobody embarrassed themselves which was the main reason I went looking but I'll be damned if the effort was in vein so here's a post anyway.

Is there an English quota we are trying to fill up?
Not English necessarily but homegrown. Which is why I always find it funny when people do their transfer wish list and want to sell every homegrown player with foreign players. Makes sense to fill it with a back up keeper.

I remember when he was very highly regarded. Obviously his career has completely nosedived but shouldn't be a poor number two. Then again, it was hard to imagine Dubravka would be quite that useless.

Ya. I meant homegrown quota. Else it doesn't make sense that we pick a guy who has played like 10 games in last 2-3 years.

He became the GOAT GK on one of my FM saves.

He might have gotten some game time for Palace, had we not broken him in preseason. Maybe we feel guilty.

I reckon this guy will be the best goalkeeper in the world in 5 years and you can quote me on that

He was woeful at the end of his Stoke career. I mean look at these posts from when they sold him

Jack Butland couldn't catch a football and had no positional sense(I won't even mention his lack of ability with his feet!) Well before he broke his ankle! He would never have been England no1! He was always shit and was a massive reason we got relegated!

Jack has had some memorable games in a Stoke shirt, but he's been on the wane over the past 2.5 years. He has had a dreadful season, partially down to form but it's also clear he has lost his motivation. It

He needs to go. For his sake and ours.

I was a massive fan of his back in the day, but he's simply a liability now.

Jack Butland
When Stoke managed to retain their prized assets last summer after their relegation from the Premier League, they would have expected a quick return to the Premier League. Jack Butland was chief among those players who stuck around. He was a target for Aston Villa, among other clubs, but Stoke stood firm, demanding a big asking price for their keeper, and he stayed. The Potters may well wish they had cashed in now. It has been a dismal season for the England international, whose reputation and market value has plummeted.

He was deemed too good for the Championship at the start of the season. Not any more. He ended the campaign as our lowest ranked player with at least 30 appearances. His save success rate of just 56.8% was the second worst in the division and he made five errors that led to opposition goals before being dropped. Stoke’s win rate rose from 31.4% in the keeper’s 35 starts to 45.5% when he didn’t play. The team conceded 0.51 goals per game fewer without him. That big-money move suddenly looks a long way off.

Butland is he good? I only want answers from posters who actually saw him play several games

Terrible keeper, even before he was washed up.

But homegrown status matters.

This feels like the sort of transfer you would do in football manager to see if you could revive the career of a failed wonderkid. Or just to get another homegrown in the squad.

Spoke to a Palace fan who said Butland is decent and had a fantastic game against Brighton last season.

Made quite a few good saves and saved a penalty to help them get a draw:

Should be an upgrade on Dubravka.

Don't understand this at all. Is he better than Heaton? People saying it helps the homegrown quota but we could do that by promoting from within, no? Just another weird keeper signing.

We sign keepers with the ease in which Bayern nab Bundesliga talent.

It's an art.

Only deals we seem to excel at.

People seem to refuse to acknowledge he played in the easy cup games, and overly romanticise his clean sheets.

True. The same people conveniently forget how when Van Gaal asked Romero to step up, when Dave was on the verge of Madrid, he was terrible.

Romero's time here is so overrated.

How is he overrated?

He was Argentina's no. 1 Gk that reached WC Final when he was here.
His Wiki: Romero is the most capped goalkeeper in the history of the Argentina national team,[3] playing over 90 times since his debut in 2009. He has represented Argentina at two World Cups and at three Copa América tournaments, finishing as runner-up in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, as well as in the 2015 and 2016 Copa América tournaments.

I think that buttland would make the perfect last signing from the Glazers

If we’re signing Palace back up keepers, I’d rather have Sam Johnstone back

Oh yeah, so that's where he went. Seems like a terrible move for him, zero minutes in PL, 2 games in the Carabao.

I have no idea how good Guehi is, mind you.

Great goalkeeper, honestly still has potential to be world class. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he replaced DDG within 2-3 months. He's THAT good. Stoke/Crystal Palace (albeit on loan) are idiots for letting him go.
At the end of the season, we'll let De Gea go and have twice as good as a keeper in Butland signed permanently I reckon. You can quote me on this at the end of the season, I'm THAT confident.

bite you cnuts, bite

Wow - we must not rate Heaton at all. Appears he's just here for the vibes - basically a Grant replacement

Pure speculation, but given our apparent interest during the summer, I wouldn’t be surprised if the conversation started with us asking to take Johnstone on loan and led to them saying they’d be willing to let Butland out.
