ISIS in Iraq and Syria

Holy crap that is a big shift
They can't keep on allowing these mortars. The live stream atm shows their mortar team preparing, and I saw 3 tanks move right to the border earlier on. This could escalate right before our eyes.

IS trying to create chaos to cover a retreat? Or trick Turks into attacking Kurd positions?

I don't think it's either of those, they've been firing mortars into the North of the town constantly. Some manage to get across the border, like this one.

I think another mortar has landed near the border.

Amazing how the tide has turned in recent days. Thought the city would fall to ISIS just a week or so ago.

Turkish troops got into vehicles and moved towards the border. They're not armed but it's not clear what's in the vehicles or at the border point, where the tanks were.

There's a possibility that ISIS have moved towards the border point, that has been an area with a large number of clashes in the past few days. So much confusion.

Another huge explosion! These air strikes are huge!

Because I am Kurdish and this is a very big battle in the war.
Oh i didnt realise, good luck to you.
I know an Iraqi Kurd and he is hugely passionate about independence. Didn't really know anything about it until i met him.

Surely the notion of an IS airforce is absurd! I'd imagine they'd be easy targets as soon as they got in the air!

Pure propaganda. It's laughable to think that they could possibly be serious. They're not a ragtag group of idiots who've been handed weapons and have stumbled through Iraq and Syria by chance, but I don't think they're close to being the kind of force that they want the world to believe. After finally coming up against a competent opponent in the form of fierce Kurdish resistance, they've been exposed somewhat.

This is what pisses me off about the entire Kobane situation. Kobane could easily be saved, and then they, America and some of its allies, had the temerity to come out and write it off. It's as if they don't understand how symbolic Kobane is. They can make a stand and send those dogs fleeing, or they can let it fall and give IS an undeserved propaganda coup, thus escalating the situation. What better time to take that stand than when the Kurdish forces are already pinning them down and forcing IS to finally work for a victory instead of letting them walk in and take everything because they've already had too much good propaganda go their way.

ISIS sending even more reinforcements to Kobane. They are attacking on 5 fronts today but so far all attacks have been repelled.

How many fighters (guesstimate?) have isis lost in the whole Kobane affair
Meh I don't know, YPG officials say 1000 and others say 700 minimum. Nobody really knows tbh, but it's a big number. :)

The new stalingrad ?

Not at all. There aren't many battles comparable to Stalingrad. Over two million casualties as National Socialism and Communism met head on, and the repercussions of either outcome would be felt around the world. The sheer devastation in that city was harrowing, and I'm not sure we'll see anything quite like it for a long time.

So seeing as the Iraqi army clearly can't deal with ISIS, how about we get some boots on the ground to sort this mess out? :)
What I don't get is that it's so obvious that it will have to happen at some point anyway. Why wait and give them more advantage?

Another thing, anyone heard about another muslim group that has been abducting ISIS fighters when they catch them by themselves?

The Iraqi army cant cope with ISIS, because they wont fight in sunni territory. Once ISIS reaches shia "heartland", they´ll struggle to advance, because shia militars will actually start to fight them. What would be the point of american ground-troops?

I red about these other groups. Apparently a ex-FSA commander leading a small group of fighters, who use guerrilla warfare to kill some ISIS soldiers. Good read, but it has absolutely no significance for the war.

The battle of Kobane is important but it wont be a turning point. ISIS wont be able to take over the rest of syria and Assad wont be able to regain control over the whole country. Regardless of whats going to happen to Kobane, there will be a stalemate for now.

The big question is, whats going to happen once ISIS took over Anbar and starts to attack Baghdad.

The new stalingrad ?

It's what Verdun was kinda intended to be in WWI. If the YPGs and coalition can draw them in and annihilate them continuously, they could effectively destroy ISIS' ability to operate.

Kobane is important because it shows ISIS can be defeated if the right strategy is implemented. If it falls, then it also gives a huge propaganda boost to ISIS who will claim to have withstood attacks from the strongest Air Force in the world, and took a town.

To be fair, they are Kurdish Germans. They just happen to be part of a biker gang.

Median Empire (the german biker gang) is run by a kurdish guy and they have many kurds in their ranks. Its not really funny, because they are hardcore criminals. Their leader is supposed to be extremely intelligent and violent.
If they come back, they´ll be armed to the teeth and have combat experiance. Fantastic. I hope german courts dont let them come back.

No air strikes today, that's the first time it's happened in weeks! I don't know how to interpret that, seeing as there were planes in the sky.

At some point I'd imagine the airstrikes will become pointless if much of the fighting is going on within city streets. They do seem to have worked in the past few days though - not sure if that's because they were going after easy targets on the outskirts of the city or whether they were shooting into it.

They were firing into the city for the past few days, I saw it all on the streams.
