Is Sancho a bust? And, is Antony headed the same way too?

14 appearances in a new league which were punctuated by injury and a world Cup break and he's a bust. Okay then.
This. Plus he has managed to score 5 goals too

not a bad flop so far imo

What about the Romans as well eh, what did they ever do for us?

I think Antony fits the ETH profile quite well, works hard, finds space, plenty of progressive passes. This season we actually have a right flank and a balanced team.

I wonder why that could be?

He wasn’t a flying winger when we bought him. Do people expect him to become one just because we paid a lot for him?

I trust this manager to get the best from them. I'd be tempted to try Antony from the left at some point. Maybe reading in the cup have him left with Garnacho on the right and Weghorst in the middle

I thought this from the moment I saw him play, he is 99% left footed and can't go outside his man, is it really that crazy to suggest that a left footed player should play on the left? Same with Sancho on the right, in fact we bought him for the right to sort out our problem right wing position. I'm not sure at what point/who decided he should play on the left.

Anyway, I think Sancho has the talent and I think ETH will get the best out of him. I wouldn't write him off yet. I have more doubts Anthony making it than I do Sancho.

Not sure why there's an obsession with money and player output it's a weird association prominent with United fans. Antony is in his first season in the league. Some players hit the ground running others need time to adapt. I think the real assessment period for a player should be just after the 24 month mark. Sancho like Antony has been good in patches, what they need to do is replicate having an influence consistently.

Both players have shown promise, I'd understand criticism if they were totally shambolic but that's not the case.

Sancho certainly isn't a standard case of a player flopping or being "found out" in the PL. Something a bit unusual has been going on there. He's apparently back now (in regular training), so let's see how he gets on. I'd assume he'll be eased back into rotation rather carefully.

Eh, I think they're rather good. There might've been cheaper options but I doubt there were much better. I like how Sancho links up with Rashford and Martial, and I like how reliable Antony is as an outlet for possession.

Actual flops are rare anyhow. Ronaldo was one, but even then you can argue he had some value.

Yeah that arguement doesn't stand up so well, when his ex team mate Haaland has been tearing up the league. There's obviously more to that story, and I think he'll find his mojo again

Antony signing just didn't make sense and given the performances we are seeing, even less now. Sancho was always going to be expensive as an English player tearing up another league and he does seem to have more in his locker. Antony doesn't seem to have anything worth waiting for.

I have more hope for Sancho but don't think he'll reach a level where he's one of the best in the league.

Guess the trust in Ten Hag is sinking already!

then taking a lengthy break to gather himself mentally.
I’m Sancho- and Antony-sceptic as well, and you make lots of good observations.

Is there any evidence that that’s what’s happened though? Getting sent to a boot camp in a remote part of Holland looks more like something that’s been imposed on him by the management to get him into better physical shape. Why do people (not just you) assume it’s to “gather himself mentally”?

Too early to say on both counts.

Antony because it's just his first season in the league. And Sancho because we haven't seen how he reacts to this time off.

Our second highest goal scorer this season is underwhelming?
Ok then....

ETH needs to educate the fan base on how he wants his wingers to play.

It is absolutely by design that Antony time after time takes on his wing back and then turn back out towards the side line and slow things down. That enable the team to move up and pin the opponent down. It’s the entire purpose with having wide wingers and inverting wingbacks — instead for the other way around. The defending team will take away the center of the pitch first, and when your wingers stay wide you gain much safer passing points from deep.

Sure there are situations Antony must adopt to in the PL. He haven’t been able to live on going out wide and then beat fullbacks coming to hard at him. He got to avoid those situations were being one-footed hurt him. He must find ways to threaten the goal more.

But we really need to get a better grip of the fundamentals of ETH game plan. I saw someone do a loooong and thorough analysis of Sancho on YT and ended up making the recommendation that ETH should use inverting wingers instead of wide wingers because it suits Sancho better. How can there be so little awareness of ETH game that so many really deep diving into following this team can’t understand the impact that would have on how we play?

Sancho proved one thing for sure. How shit the Bundesliga is.

Kagawa, Mkhitaryan and Sancho from the same damn team too.

I think Sancho needs to be in perfect physical shape to be a success in the Premier League. We all know there is a player under there but tubby won't cut it in the Premier League these days.

He needs to be able to not just keep up with the pace in games but set it himself.

Hopefully he comes back with a decent bodyfat percentage and then let's see if he has enough speed to take Antonys place on the right wing for now until Antony makes the improvements he needs to make too.

Battle of the ghetto superstars... Council estate vs Favela

Why do we particularly care they won't be worth the fees we paid for them? Does anyone really have a 100% hit rate? We've also got Garnacho for peanuts, it all evens out.

Sancho has had his problems, but has hardly come into a good environment. Not to mention the euros debacle by Southgate. Yet he's still only 22.

Anthony hasn't even played a season for Christ's sake and again, only 22.

I also find it really weird we're looking for a negative in our squad, when it's the most balanced it's been in a long time. We also got a lot of our loanees doing well, that gives us hope for the future of the squad too.

I believe it was reported in the media, they mentioned it was mental conditioning thing rather than anything physical. We shall see soon enough though, he should get some minutes.

Except neither Garnacho or Rashford do this

The next few games will be vital for Sancho. He's back from his individual training sessions and I expect him to to be ready to roll. Another lukewarm season from Sancho then its curtains imo.

Worrying signs for Antony but its obviously too early to judge. I'll refrain from calling him a flop until he's had at least one season under his belt.

It's a matter of coaching, give it time ETH will have them firing, they're still young give it time.

Can see him becoming ETH's Maguire both in terms of waste of resources and subsequent presence in the team, pretty much a mainstay already despite the poor performances, already saw people crying out for Pellestri etc which was definitely fair last game.

And no i don't think Sancho is a bust hes a silky player will definitely come good with confidence. Not sure about Antony, doesn't seem to have technique or pace, or at least isn't showing it.

I still think Sancho will turn out good. I also believe going for Antony was a big mistake we made in panic mode, a move that in normal circumstances would've been blocked by someone from the club.
It's also hardly Antonys fault, so far we're getting exactly what we payed for, so it's on Ten Hag.

I say "big mistake" but this depends on the next summer, if we still have budget that we need to rebuild the squad to finally compete then Antony fee will not look so bad.

I paid £80 for my new pitchfork. The vendor assured it was high quality, and that everybody would need a pitchfork these days. Since, I couldn't use it once yet, was it a bust? Or will there be occasions when it pays off?

Let's see how Sancho comes back before making judgement. Two bad seasons would be a very worrying sign.

One thing I will say on Antony is that, although he can be irritating and seemingly one-dimensional, he does have personality and imposes himself on the game, for good or bad. Sancho too often goes completely missing which is much worse.

I don’t know about pitch forking the OP but Murtough needs hunting down for his hamfisted blundering in this situation

I actually worry less about Anthony. He's a young lad, still adapting to the Premier League and he has the raw pace, aggression, trickery and confidence to become a top player with the right guidance.

Sancho is technically amazing but seems weak, slow and a little lazy, so he worries me more long term

Both are very young players. I was just watching an interview of how Jesse Lingard suffered whilst his mum was hospitalised with depression and he had to look after his two younger siblings. Who knows what's going on with Sancho? Antony has been here for less than 6 months. Lets give them a break.

If sancho gets back to form then he takes Antony’s spot straight away. At least sancho was showing glimpses at the start of the season and started taking people on. Don’t think Antony has took anyone on yet.
Both have been a flop so far.

I'll take Sancho over Antony though, because Sancho at least showed some talent here and there.

I just don't get this, I mean out of the two only one scored in his first 3 games and only one has already matched the others goal tally for the entire of the previous season

In a United shirt Antony has been better by a mile, not just in terms of numbers but the way we finally have someone who keeps the width down the right which actually stretches sides

This place has been way too harsh on Antony. Honestly we drop money on a winger and because he isn’t instantly a Kanchelskis-Beckham hybrid everyone writes him off. Can’t really blame people when we’ve had so many flops.

It is my opinion that some football fans do not partake in the same reality as myself and others when it comes to how we perceive reality outside of the highlight reels of Haaland and Mbappe.
