Is producing a Mainoo more satisfying than winning a trophy?

Not that I don’t enjoy winning stuff but for me, yes.

As an older fan I’ve been treated to many trophies but rarely have I been so proud that we produce players the calibre of Mainoo. Many have made there way into the team over the years but few as talented as Mainoo.

Seeing them come from the academy, into the first team and thriving there is as good as it gets for me as a fan.

maybe the real trophies we got were the young boys along the way.

Different types of satisfaction but I guess the enjoyment lasts over every game they play than just one game and the immediate aftermath.

Yeah, just trying to summarise the overall positive vibe of each. I’d rather produce a Mainoo than win one PL for example

For me, no.

But it does make me proud that he has just strolled I to the first team and dominated.

It’s better to produce Mainoo AND win a trophy beating Cheaty. Don’t sell us short.

if you'd asked me the same question about Scholes after his first season I'd have said no

but three decades later looking back on his career and all those memories it's a resounding yes

But what’s the point in producing these players if you don’t win anything?

Are Spurs fans celebrating the last 10 years because they got the “producing Harry Kane” accolade?

Put your hands together. We got the trophy because we produced Mainoo.

I guess my answer might change in the context of Tottenham ‘no chance of winning any trophy’ Hotspur.

For me, it adds an extra layer of delight onto winning trophies when there's academy players playing key roles - such as the FA Cup win with Mainoo and Garnacho scoring.

But, no, if we produced players like that but they didn't win us trophies, then the pleasure of seeing those players would start to fade as they wouldn't be achieving what they should for us.

Producing our own quality players is great. Winning trophies is (a slightly better) great. Winning trophies with quality players we produced is the best of all.

Don't you think this question is at least 2-3 years premature? Mainoo is a great prospect but it's not like he's proven he can do this for a few years straight.

I get the sentiment behind the question. But Mainoo hasn't achieved anything close to what Rashford has for instance. And does having produced Rashford make up for not having won much of note the last 11 years?

Best and only suitable answer.

This is the sort of nonsense we mock on RAWK. For all his promise Mainoo hasn’t done anything yet. You make it sound like he’s already won three ballon d’ors.

Producing a Mainoo is for your own ego really.

Didn't you lot have quite a few above average dudes in the early 90s. And even more in the 60s (forgive me if I'm off by a decade).

Mainoo is hardly the first special United grown kid, especially for an older fan.

Its still all about winning trophies and the excitement and drama of overcoming the adversity to win the league or the two big cups. The voyage of specific players is secondary.

Not really. If that's your primary goal as a club then you'll just end up losing those players to successful clubs that are winning league titles and the CL.

You mean all those memories of him being brilliant whilst winning a metric ton of trophies.

I would say no. Clubs produce academy players every year and the only thing that makes one particular player interesting is his quality and the prospect of future success.

Is the point of producing players like Mainoo not winning trophies?

Is Mainoo really that good? He looks the part but no more so than Greenwood, Rashford in their first few months. As an older fan you should also remember the likes of Scholes coming on who were a ridiculous level (remember a game against Chelsea in his early days which was insane). It’s not like Mainoo is tearing through defences every game on a crazy generational talent level.

Maybe without ridiculous stuff like this from fans and media he can fulfil his potential and become the player you all seem to think he already is. Then we can have Mainoo AND trophies.

Define "trophy". If it's a proper title, like the league or the CL, then no. The main reason it is exciting to see the club bring through a super talent is because it increases our chances of winning the main titles.

Maybe if I was an Evertonian and I had the choice of having had Rooney for 6-7 years or an FA Cup, I'd choose Rooney. But he was a generational talent, and had the promise to perhaps become much better than what he did, even though he was always world class.
