Is Harry Maguire being a worldwide punchline deserved?

I used to hold the view that he's a decent backup. Nowhere near worth 80m and shouldn't be first choice but can do a reasonable job as cover for better players.

Unfortunately, he cannot. He's just awful nowadays and I can't see a way back for him.

All the banter aside....

Who the feck in their right mind will buy him?!

How do feck do we get rid of this guy?

Remember, we still have Eric fecking Bailly on the books.

Sell them for parts?
Russian mob?

Everyone night say he's shit, but name someone better at sticking his arm up when the opposition has just scored to trick the linesman into giving offside as if he doesn't think VAR exists

And his pointing game is a solid 9/10

Savage was absolutely desperate to absolve Maguire of any blame. Maybe De Gea should have known better given who he was passing to, but I refuse to accept that this isn't enough space for a supposed top class defender to receive a pass and not immediately panic and give it to an opponent:

Literally all he had to do was turn around and he takes three players out of the game. Not a doubt in my mind that Varane or Martinez are fine with that pass.
If you look at the Sevilla player who made the block is at when Maguire receives the ball, he is basically in his field of vision. I don't understand why he simply didn't lift the ball up, did he think he would nutmeg his opponent or that he'd simply watch him pass it without moving

He will be of use to a side that relies heavily on set-pieces, still. Reckon we could rely on people willing to pay around £20m for that.

The guys got massive mistakes in his game, and they get magnified more because he's at UTD.

His time is up at Utd , needs to be sold in summer, for his sake more than Utds , it will do both a favour when he's gone. And his next club he will make no errors at at all.

Seriously?

You think someone will actually pay 20 million quid for this calamity Ganon?!

His set piece game is shit as well.

Let's face it, we're stuck with his square head for years.
We probably couldn't even loan his sorry ass.

He'd make mistakes in a Sunday league.

There's probably better players you could find on any given Sunday.

He's an English international whose suited for a deep line defence. Thus there will be potential buyers. Unfortunately I can see them asking us to subsidize a big chunk of his salary.

Honestly?
Hope you're right.

The only way out of this mess is if Leicester get relegated.
Maybe, and that's a big maybe, they'll take him back for 5 million, and he agrees to a 80% salary cut.

Can't see any of that happening.
He seems like a proper deluded person who believes in his own illusions of grandeur.

There's no way he's agreeing to a pay cut. Or switching to a championship team.

Even a championship league is above his standards, but shhhh, don't tell anyone.

He still has this weird cult amongst our support that try and defend him. We have zero chance of selling him, zero. He will be going somewhere on loan.

He looked good in a deep defensive line during England's world cup run against Panama, Tunisia and a very poor Sweden side and is still living off it. An imposter.

There's homegrown quotas that need to be fulfilled and as said, Maguire is useful in a deep line defence were they defend with numbers. The only big issue is his salary which is at nearly 190k a week. The highest salary at the likes of Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham is that of 120k-150k. Brentford and Fulham pay even less. Then there's of course his giant ego. Would the guy who has nothing to prove play for West Ham?

I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Sure he is not the best around but after last season's shit show he is pretty solid this year. Apart from that no one deserves to be bullied like that. At least we should fully support him as long as he is here.

Maintain the same sentiment? The guy is irredeemable...

I honestly believe he brings a lot of it in himself by doubling down on poor performances which terrible interviews and sound bites. I month ago he actually said he has nothing to prove!?

All of them have better center backs in their under 18 team let alone first team players.

Micheal Keane is a PhD doctor of football for Harry.

There's no manager in his right mind who would ask the club to get him Harry Maguire.

And let's not even get into what a riot that would spur for the fans of said clubs.
Someone tries to bring Maguire to my club, I'd fecking light my self on fire in front of the stadium.

Even as a backup his match sharpness is even less.

I never wanted Maguire. In fact I was one of the few who preached caution at a time when almost everyone was so thrilled of United signing the new Stam or something similar. However he's not as shit as you portray him to be. Sure he is a football relic of a system that is slowly being phased away. However most clubs at the bottom half of the EPL table has no choice but to play such system

What a terrible signing it’s been. When Leicester asked for £80m the club should have picked up a centre or two from around Europe

It is really harsh that he's essentially become a meme, but I think the captain armband at United has destroyed him. Not only that, but I think it demotivates every other player on the pitch when he's the captain.

I don't want to berate Maguire anymore because I'm sure that's already been done to death. But you can't play for Man United and be captain of the club when you look so unsure, insecure and indecisive as to your job on the pitch, and role as a leader.

There was an instance in the second half where he stalled about 5 times taking a simple free kick on the half way line. Eventually Eriksen came over and took it. But like, what was he doing? Just make an easy 5 yard pass.

When Martinez and Varane play, they fire up the entire back line, defend high and set the tempo for the entire squad. When Maguire plays, he seems to just suck the life out of the team with his dithering. It's like everyone is saying to themselves "why is this guy still here? Why is he my captain?"

Needs to go in the summer.

Well of course I want to get rid of him, I don't think anybody on this forum thinks otherwise. He simply is shite.

I still don't like it when players are ridiculed and constantly memed on especially by media and pundits. Fans is another matter but not journalists, pundits or freakin politicians
But at the end of the day I simply hope he fecks of to newcastle in the summer

Maguire could have easily walked in ETH's office and asked him to find a new captain

Harry "I got nothing left to prove" Maguire. Don't even bother selling him, just terminate the fecking contract.

when they rejected £60 million I was flabbergasted we offered so much and that they had the bulls to reject it. Reminds me of Newcastle rejecting the initial Carol bid

It's clear that his confidence is in absolute pieces. He needs to move on for his own sake.

Best hope is that Southgate gets a Premier league job this summer

Come on Boehly. You know you want the England manager

This or Moyes are our only real hope. Praying West Ham win Conference league and get into Europa, so they can afford to loan him or something.

Maguire was unlucky to get an own goal last week and put into a difficult situation by De Gea tonight (not that he didn't make an error himself of course). I'm sure he'll be relieved when he leaves United because all the pressure is too much for him. Not a 1st choice CB for United and even less a captain.
He called for the pass from De Gea FFS. He's the worst captain I've ever seen play for United. Possibly the worst footballer too.

Anyone who can't see that he has a weak mentality, doesn't accept responsibility but also doesnt have the skillset to be a United player must be blinkered.

All I'm saying is that if he is going to get blamed for everything bad that ever happens at Manchester United, then he should also be praised for when he does well. And tonight aside, we were 9-0-0 with only 3 goals against in his last 9 starts. If you want to include last weeks game and completely ignore all the other games he came off the bench, then so be it. Then we were 9-1-0 with only 5 goals against
Because he is always a liability.

I was a defender of Maguire for a long time.. He did steady the ship at the back when he arrived. Sorted us for a bit.

But this last 2 seasons Ive literally no way to defend the lad. Hes a disaster. A complete liability. And you can see if affecting the rest of the team.

plus add into the fact the guy is captain!

I was so glad Ten Hag instantly seen what the rest of us could see, and pretty much instantly dropped him. The fact we are now stuck with him til end of season worries me a lot. I have no confidence he can do a decent job for us when it matters. Theres bound to be some calamitous errors in a few games before we are finished.

He doesnt help himself every time hes out for England thinking hes prime Nesta with quotes like 'I have nothing to prove', he must have some serious Yes men around him if thats what he thinks

Maguire is one of the biggest cases of a collapse of form and confidence that I can remember. I don't buy into the fact he's an absolute stinker of a player, you don't make 250 PL appearances and 50 appearances for England before you're 30 if you're crap. Regardless of his current situation, its laughable to suggest otherwise. With a fresh start and in many systems and teams he'll do absolutely fine, the problem we have is not that there wouldn't be a club prepared to spend £25m on him, there will be and likely many more than 1. The problem is the wages.

He is so slow and lacks awareness, so can only play in a deep defensive line or a counter attacking side. He cannot press or play for a team that dominates or tries to dominate possession. He is so limited as a player.

He would do well at West Ham or any defensive/ counter attacking side.

EtH will drop him now for the rest of the season. Shaw will play CB now for the remaining games.

Right, I'm not saying he can play in any system or for any side, but reading this thread you'd think he's a league 2 player, and he's not. If wages were not an issue we'd have no problem finding a buyer.

I think Maguires contribution to the howler last night has put him and DeGea in the spotlight, but for me WanBissaka had a terrible night, he was all over the place, out of position, he was running around like Tevez, that has a massive impact on the defence and midfield, Sabitzer also absent from midfield.

Maguire needs to go as does DeGea, Lindelof may have enough to stay as 4th choice

Maguire playing in a deep lying defence that hoofs it forward will look decent

De Gea shouldn't passing him there imo either way. And agree on everything else as I said the same in my post that you quoted.
