Film Is Die Hard really a Christmas film...

You bet! That and a mate's missus has started a page on Facebook ranting about it not being a Christmas film.

Well it definitely is. Anything set at Christmas is a Christmas film. Is it the most "Christmassy" film? Probably not. Can it be your favourite Christmas film? Sure, why not!? Also, why can women not enjoy Die Hard? There's nothing to be offended by here. I'd give a shout out to Gremlins and Batman Returns which are also not "Christmassy" Christmas films.

Movie soundtrack credits include
  • Winter Wonderland
  • Christmas in Hollis
  • Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow
  • Ode to Joy
  • Jingle Bells

Yup - Christmas movie

I would go out on a limb and say Batman Returns and Gremlins are my two favourite Christmas films. Bizarrely enough both films were released in the summer...

It would be except I'm pretty sure it's shown on TV about 3 times a week all year round.

Quite simple answer really.

It isn't a film you'd sit down with your 9 year old daughter on Christmas eve. Killing, guns etc. No way.

But would you sit down and whack it on after the kids have gone to bed and you've watched the snow man, heck yes!

It is indeed. I had an argument with a guy trying ti say its not and trying to use frozen as an example of what is to prove me wrong.

"Is Die Hard really a Christmas film..."

I never thought so. It has a Christmas tree in it, though.

on the other hand, "RTL" used to air war flicks like "Battle of Midway" regularily on Dec24, so what tf do i know about Christmas movies...

I only found out after some googling that the film was originally released in July. I always just assumed it was released near Christmas but I guess not.

It has a hell of a lot more than just a damn tree. Christmas music, set during a Christmas party, lines about Christmas.

ffs. It's as Christmas a film as it gets without having a fecking Elf or Santa in it.
He puts a Santa hat on the dead terrorist in the elevator, that's close enough to Santa for me.

In DH, the Xmas scenario, i always felt, was only in for the occasional visual prank (vis. hat-on-dead-body) and to give an explanation why no help shows up for a long time. Would have worked as well on thanksgiving or superbowl or so - the Xmas thing is by no means crucial for the story whatsoever.
For me, a christmas film has to have something in it that connects to Xmas (a few dozen dead evil terrorists don't really qualify).

But that's just silly old-fashioned me - you're absolutely entitled to your opinion :)

Disclaimer: love Die Hard, its imo one of the best action movies ever made. Don't get me wrong.

Do you consider Home Alone a Christmas movie?

What is the reason for it not being a Christmas film? That it's an action movie? Surely that just makes it a Christmas film of a different genre.

We don't say Home Alone and Elf aren't Christmas films because they're comedies.

That's almost as bad as refusing to accept that Die Hard is obviously a Christmas movie.
I've stayed away from run-of-the-mill Hollywood standard products for a while now, with a very few exceptions.

I've explained my reasons a few posts before. Just my opinion, if you have a different one, its absolutely fine with me :)

It's 27 years old!!

You're also wrong about Die Hard, it's set at Christmas, based on a man trying to reunite his family, at a Christmas party, featuring Christmas music, lots of Christmas references, snow, a Santa hat etc etc. It's a Christmas movie.

Set at Christmas? Check
Use of Christmas songs? Check
Is Christmas/Christmassy things used in dialogue? Check
Is it being Christmas time an actual part of the films plot? Check
Is the film about bringing a family together? Check

There is no way that it is not a Christmas film.
Yippe kayay motherfeckers!

"It's Christmas Theo, it's the time of miracles!"

Strongwalker: "not a Christmas movie"

There you go.

And the main villain actually mutters the lines "ho, ho, ho!" and pulls it off.

And this bloke does a big fat line of snow...doesn't get more Christmas than that....
