Is Darts a sport?

Not only is darts a sport but its about to become an Olympic Sport. The World Darts Federation began applying to the IOC many years ago and just last year was accepted as a sport by GAISF, the governing body for recognising sports worldwide. This was a pre-requisite for being accepted as an Olympic sport. Sport England recognised darts as a sport last year and 90% of the 67 countries who are members of the World Dart Federation have their government's Sports authorities recognising darts as a sport. Darts is favourite to become England's guest sport in the 2012 Olympics.
As in any sport to reach the highest level you have to be focused and practice on a daily basis.
In many countries, especially in the middle East and Asia, darts is not a pub sport but is held in many varied venues. Iran recently joined the WDF and has tens of thousands of young folk playing it throughout the country.
I am personally involved in the development of darts as a sport in the Americas and to date have 18 countries that now recognise darts as a sport in this region.
We have had to get round many Bazii in our efforts but its been worthwhile to see the enjoyment it gives to so many around the world.

Check this out

This is the WDF

The next World Cup is in Eire in 2011 at Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.. You need to pay it a visit Baz and see the true sport in action.

B-Man I love Darts... I'm actual quite good at it... But its not a sport....

Its a pub game like pacman - which has got abit of a following... Its excellent TV - But certainly not a sport.

What's the javelin but a giant game of darts?

In fairness with Javilin you have to sprint up to the line and much depends on your technique... Certainly, I'd be all for the likes of Phil Taylor, Wayne Mardle or Barney sprinting 20 metres up to the Oche before delivering their killer shot...

Even make the darts heavier so its more of an effort to throw them....

Do weight divisions like boxing or weighlifting even

sport definition

sport (spôrt)
noun

  1. any activity or experience that gives enjoyment or recreation; pastime; diversion
  2. such an activity, esp. when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion and carried on, sometimes as a profession, according to some traditional form or set of rules, whether outdoors, as football, golf, etc., or indoors, as basketball, bowling, etc.

Its a pub game for many, especially in Britain, but that's not the case on a World scale.
The pub game falls under definition 1 above.
The serious game falls under defininition two. I'm around these players all year round, all over the World, and I can assure you they are athletes in every sense of the word.
You're talking about definition 1 of a sport. I'm talking 2.

With that logic - wanking is a sport then

If Darts makes the olympics - Soggy biscuit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia surely must as well

I've highlighted areas within the definition which Darts does not fall into...

I love me darts next to the next man B-Man.. Buts the only physical activity in Darts is walking onto the oche and lifting the darts up off the table and throwing a few feet in front of you... Its not the Tour de france now is it?

When you do that for 6-8 hours+ per day (including pulling the darts) it definitely falls under all those definitions.
Throwing an actual game is not that active but the prepration for it is. That is if you are going to play it as a sport and not as a pastime. I've trained Caribbean and Americas Champions and know what it takes to reach the top. I can assure you the thousands of darts players I deal with all regard what they do as a sport. Here in the Bahamas most of our National Team players work out, including the ladies.

Fair play to you B-man... Its always good to give something back to a hobby you like....

What is different to you say from a plane spotter who trains young train spotters up every day and puts 6-7 hours up every sat to follow something they love....

You got to realise that Darts is more akin to lifting a set of binoculars up on a Sunday down at Paddington and the physical writing down of a train's reg number on a piece of paper then it is to a set of 22 fellas running after a ball over 90s mins....

It's not a hobby with me Baz. It's become a job. I'm heavily involved.

I was an avid train spotter when I was young and in Manc! Took me back a few years there. Right now I do my spotting on line and have one of the largest amateur BR steam photo collections in da world. Maybe that's why I got involved with darts. Funny world.

Feck me B-man... You're up to everything...

Best of luck with both hobbies....

What that tells you is it's a pub game being taken far too seriously.

I'm hoping should I ever make it out your way, you'll give me a darts masterclass Bahama!

For now I can't even play, can't put anything up on the walls. I'm hoping to buy one of those stand alone darts boards when I've got a bit of cash, they don't come cheap though

It's only when you practice regularly that you become good. Aim for 501 30 darts, then 25, then 20. 15 will make you world class.

Ice-hockey

Are you fecked?

This thread is embarassing... To me, it's Baz' weak attempt to just put down everyone elses opinion.

If some think it's a sport, then to some it's a sport.

Darts takes great focus, practice, and commitment, to me it's a sport.

If it's not to someone else, then fine, i'm not gonna fuss, but it's embarassing that some who don't think it's a sport are taking the time to tell others it isn't.

After footy, darts is actually my favorite televised sport - still havent managed to get to a live darts events but hope to sort that out pretty soon

So does surgery.... That said I think you can include just about whatever you want in a definition of sports. I consider a sport any game or activity that is organized and played in a competitive manner. The only thing I reserve is that it requires some sort of physical skill.

Sports that are NOT sports

Darts
Snooker
Bowling
Curling
That ridiculous sport where you go on shooting targets whilst on skies in the woods
Ice-hockey

I hope to feck you are not referring to biathlon here, CW. If so, you are an idiot. Biathlon is one of the most demanding sports out there. I see you've included Ice Hockey so I take it you were not being serious.

Stop talking bollocks....

Its not demanding. Its a guy on skies shooting at a target. Its ain't rocket science and it ain't tough.

That's all well and good B Man, but you have to wonder about any 'sport' at which you can go from being a spastic to a champion in the space of six pints. ;)

Any game made famous as a recreational activity within a bar/pub is not a sport. If so, then I'm advocating for a professional beer pong league and a flip-cup league.

Played by men standing around and scratching themselves for at least 90% of the game. Occasionally they'll get to bat and run but not very often. Besides, can it really be a sport when everyone is using steroids so it's not even a comparison of physical ability? But rather who has the better pharmacist.

What's the javelin but a giant game of darts?

Have you ever thrown a javelin?

Try it sometime and get back to me on how similar they are.

Dart isn't a sport, it's a pub game.

It's like Mini-golf, except played by people who don't want to walk around too much.

Never mind darts is coarse fishing a sport? Some would say so.

Either way I'm shit at both.

Much like Shooting,Achery and fishing its more of a passtime than an actual sport. However both Shooting and Achery are classed as Olympic sports, so I see no reason why darts shouldn't dispite its unhealthy image.

.

So in conclusion, hurling a 9 foot spear is not, in fact, the same as flicking a 6 inch dart.

Someone give this bloke a doctorate.

How can you compare darts to javelin? They require completely different techniques and aims; in javelin you try to throw it as far as you can and in darts you try to throw as accurately.

And for the record, yes I have thrown a javelin before.

The above says to me that you don't actually watch any baseball but just read the headlines about it. :wenger:

If steroids (or performance enhancers) discredits a sport then quite a few, more like each sport at some point in the past, would be discredited.

If baseball is not a sport for your other reasons then you surely feel the same about cricket. Now there's a shit "sport."
