Irish Politics

But if you voted Labour and they voted with the Government every time it'd be quite frustrating I imagine. And it's panned out that way every time.

In the 80s labour had no choice but to sip from the poisoned chalice but now surely a strong left wing opposition is the better choice for actual socialists.
In that scenario said person doesn't want Labour in office because of that, so not voting for them isn't really tactical voting, as I see it anyway.

My ma always said to fill them all out down to 20 or 30 or whatever ridiculous number it is now but I don't want my vote going to over half of the ballot under any circumstances. I think she likes giving some high numbers as a feck you.

Tactical voting isn't something I get into either. I vote for the TDs I want in order of preference and leave the rest out. I wouldn't put a shinner in ahead of the Soc Dems for tactical reasons because no shinner has done a tap for my constituency. I've honestly no idea how FF/FG get any votes where I live. They put the leaflet in the door and claim they were involved in all sorts of initiatives but if you've been paying attention they weren't involved at all.

Hilarious that they basically had a free run and managed to completely cock it up by virtue of their leaders being so unlikable.

Harris is so completely unlikeable that he's too one-dimensional to play an unlikeable character in anything other than a panto for kids.

he has a really special, smug way of talking down to people, which is pretty funny from a former health minister who thought covid-19 was the 19th covid.

I only ever vote for one person. That way I don't indirectly end up electing anyone I don't want to vote for and I can always say "well I didn't vote for that clown anyway".

I have to not go to the local pub until the elections are over. I can't take one more syllable about 'illegals'.

This is worth a read if you care about the policies of the various parties when it comes to climate change and the environment.

tl;dr
Labour, Greens, SDP = good
FFG, Sin Féin = bad
Aontú = ugly

Aontú are ugly in general.

That's quite interesting, the fact the Greens are only third is quite funny.

It's also quite interesting about Sinn Fein. I know a lot of Shinners and party members, especially the younger ones, are very Green, but this is them trying to be THE mainstream party. The electorate, especially the rural electorate, hates Green issues.

Sinn Fein has tried not to offend their current base and widen it where possible more than run with a strong manifesto. It could be their undoing and alienate all the fresh younger voters they have gained in the last 10 years.

I saw Micheal Martin described as a Renaissance painting of a baby, can't unseen it now.

I got a leaflet through the door from the freedom party. Jesus wept. Why do all their candidates look like paedos? Actually maybe I've answered my own question.

The candidates in my area are so shockingly bad. I’m just going to vote left and hope a few more of them get in and see where that takes us.

Where are you? I'm in the Sligo/Leitrim 4 Seat constituency and there is one FF, one FG, one SF, and a community-focused Independent, which is as good as you'd get in such a rural area.

How is it in 2024 I can still be getting this number of leaflets in the door?

These guys will sit there straight faced talking about the environment, while at the same time I've filled two black bags with all the unread paper thats come through my letterbox over the past month. They go from the door, straight to the bin in 99.9% of houses and yet everyone is acting like it's still ok?

The establishment is playing catch up in a pitiful way on lots of issues.

How is this feckin dweeb Taoiseach?

He's absolutely soulless and couldn't even feign empathy in the face of someone who was obviously quite upset.

He's since apologised to her and said 'it's not who he is', but it's clear to me it's exactly who he is.

He was my wife’s minister at one time (she’s a civil servant). By all accounts he’s actually a very nice man and looked out for his staff

Maybe it’s because I’m a nordie but i wouldn’t trust SF as far as I could throw them.

I think they would let themselves get carried away with border polls and the such whilst the country continues to go to hell

Glad someone else said it, that was fecking outrageous.
Let me shock you further, I once wrote to Leo to ask for help in a problem I was having with Connolly hospital. A few days later the problem was resolved and I received an apology from the consultant

While none of us are sure what they'd do, I don't think they will focus on the border if they get into office. They have busted their balls to appear to have a wider appeal than their history would suggest.

I think we need to know if they are a viable option. We need change, and at the moment they are the most likely option. If they get in, they will be scrutinised like no other government ever, and if they feck up maybe someone like the Soc Dems need to up their game, pick up the pieces and make themselves the option. One of mates here in Sligo is a Norn Protestant and votes Sinn Fein but he can't let anyone he grew up with know, for obvious reasons.

That actually doesn't surprise me at all, they're all about the 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch your's' politics. Meanwhile we had the biggest data breach in the history of the state under these clowns because they were running the whole thing on outdated machines and software.

my friend's uncle is running for FF. He keeps telling me to vote for him, he's a lovely man, I obviously refuse, nobody nice can actually be running for FF.

Got his leaflet through the door the other day, one of his main priorities is to lower the VAT rate for restaurants and pubs.

Guess what him and his son both own? Pubs!

Self-serving bastards. He'll win, too.

Let’s be honest though, how many really go into politics for reasons other than furthering themselves or their own nests?
I’d say the pot is fairly empty of genuine politicians

You reckon he'll get Marc McSharry's seat?
