Can anyone clarify what the US did to Iran in 1998? I know it's nitpicky, but Clinton bombed Iraq in 1998, not Iran. Also, Kuwait in 1991? What? Most of the more recent US interventions were a result of some precipitating factor (ethnic cleansing in Bosnia/Kosovo, AQ bombing US embassies while hiding in Sudan and Afghanistan, etc.). I know it's not intended to be an accurate visual...just for propaganda but still. The US was on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon from 82-84, where it was attacked by...Hezbollah and Iran. The US led a UN authorized force in Korea, as were the operations in Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq in 1991 and 1992-1996.

I'm not debating a large portion, if not most, of the interventions as being bad and ill-conceived. I wish the US had kept out of Iran when the UK came asking for help in 1953, otherwise we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.
 
In other words "thank feck no US soldiers were killed as it now means I can save face and not look like a weak feck in front of my nation".

There's no way he was going to retaliate.

Iran have played major act of diplomacy here. They know that they couldnt refrain from taking action, but they've made sure that they didn't escalate the tensions to the point they cant control.
 
This is surreal. The man's a clown and should be thrown into a prison far away from any office that let's him make a decision let alone run the most powerful country in the world.

Responds to an attack on the US over fecking twitter and then starts off with 'All is well'.

Even some friends of mine who have only been to other western countries vs those who have been middle east -- big difference among them. But again, you don't have to travel to know these things. Plenty of people I know who have hardly been outside of their small town in North Carolina but have sense in them.

I think he does but he can't justify it based on this. He must be fuming he wasn't taking a shit when he saw they launched missiles. He'd have tweeted out the US will bomb them back again. Thankfully, whoever kept him busy and away from his phone deserves a medal

those are valid criticisms of the picture, but what the US did in korea was uniquely terrible, UN mission or not.

Got the notification from BBC news, I'm glad seemingly there's no casualties. Heading into 2020 with a potential war is a ridiculous way to begin the year. Hopefully the whole thing will de-escalate.

US aircraft banned from flying in the region by the FAA.

Ukraine plane could be a coincidence or possibly stray SAM or other accidental military action like in 88.

Doubt anyone knows exactly yet.
 
Trumps tweets read like from a 7 year old. Which would be ok if he wasn't an American president.

Really?

Fairly sure Trump will have to respond, for political reasons, he'll lose the election this year if he appears to simply "fold" in front of an Iranian attack on US troops. Been thinking for a while he could struggle in November due to the US economy slowing or even entering a recession before November.

I think he'll hit Iran back with all conventional means they've got in the region.

The US have killed one of Iran's top guys whilst Iran want to call it quits after dropping a few bombs on some equipment. If Trump accepts their meek surrender this is a big win for him. He's been relatively quiet so far so I'd expect him to deescalate if there are no US casualties.

Agree, it's a bit like when India blew up some trees and got one of their fighters captured in Pakistan but somehow used it as propoganda for Indian military might, the masses bought it though.
 
I am confused by Trumps response , he said if Iran did anything they should not, there would be consequences, launching 22 missiles is doing something the should not be, but he does nothing, does not even address the nation ?
Did the US know they were coming ?
It looks like the schoolyard bully has been given a slap and runaway and hid !!

There is also a good chance he’s being played. Give him the opportunity to de-escalate, let him and the American press call it a little victory and then when he’s revelling in his verysmartness hit another site in exactly the same way. Rinse repeat.
 
Engine fire , straight after take off, reports that the pilot avoided a residential area, if thats true he saved many lives.
It does sounds like a horrible coincidence, but you cant totally rule out sabotage ?
