Internationals September (World Cup Qualifiers)

Perfect ending to the Portugal game.

My favourite ever player scoring twice late on to beat my least favourite nation. Couldn't have written a better script.
This forum would not exist without that nation. Neither, for that matter would Manchester United. So go do one. ****er.

I watched 80 mins of this match, and missed both the goals. Gutted. Lesson learnt though, never write Ronaldo off. Cant wait to see his first goal for United. Wont miss that for the world.

That was LVG first game wasn't it? In his third spell.

Don't think Holland will win the group tbh although Turkey conceded late goal at home to Montenegro so that helps. Think Holland will be in the play offs with many other decent teams like Czech Republic.....

Yeah, I think it was Van Gaal's first match as a coach since the 2016 FA cup final? Not much difference too be seen yet compared to the Euros under Frank de Boer, which makes sense given they had one or two training sessions yesterday and then flew to Norway to play this game and that was the whole preparation. I got a feeling Louis really didn't want to lose the game more than anything, because he could've subbed on some fresh forwards in the last 20 minutes but chose not to.

No idea who's going to win that group, Turkey beat the Netherlands earlier in a match where they scored some of the most random fluke goals I've ever seen, their result tonight confirms the suspicion that they're not a particularly good team either, they might as well lose 4-1 away against the Netherlands with the way they're playing.

Like I said, the only worthwile thing about tonight's match was Haaland. With the form and the confidence he's having now, and his pace and physicality, what a fecking player he is. I don't watch much of Dortmund other than highlights, but seeing him for a full match tonight, you just see so many things that make him an exceptional specimen. United absolutely have to sign him next year.

Speaking as an Irish person and a Man utd fan yes he's right it is a bit weird but you carry on telling other people how they feel.

No, you can get mad for losing today in that way, but in the end, Ireland won't qualify anyway, they aren't good enough.

Be happy there was an improvement... despite the result.

I'm telling you it is weird and other Irish people agreed so your initial post was wrong. I'm not even sure what point you're making now.

Obviously we are happy with the performance.

I don't understand why De Boer and now Van Gaal insist on putting Central defenders on the wingback position. At this stage, I'm probably faster than Daley Blind, yet he can waddle around for 90 minutes with that snails pace because he put in a nice cross on Van Persie 7 years ago. A wingback should be fast, have 17 sets of lungs and if the odd cross ends on the parking lot, that' s fine, just keep running. Blind is a great guy and does well as a central midfielder or defender in our shite league, but he doesn't have the pace to be a wingback.

I've also already reached my tolerance level of Vangle's narcissism after 1 post match interview. Pompous twat.

We should still win this group though. We get Norwar and Turkey at home. If we fail to win those, King Louis should feck off and retire.

Mæhle is such a player. Would love to have him at United, only drawback is he only ever plays in a back 5 with DK and Atlanta

What did the Irish ever do to you?
I'm sorry we've inconvenienced you so much, we'll go back to our corner.
They said their least favourite. Is this some sly way of saying they hate us? Tell us how you really feel
Yes, it's pathetic and disgusting.
Wow, huge overreactions there.

I'm English and support Man United and England. My least favourite club sides are Liverpool and Man City, my least favourite international sides are Ireland and Germany. In a sport of rivalries and likes and dislikes, I don't see why any of that warrants the above reactions.

I see / hear endless amounts of Ireland, Welsh and Scottish fans posting / talking of their dislike of the English national team and how they support anyone they play against and want 'anyone but England' to win tournaments, etc. That's deemed fine and part of the rivalry in football. What's wrong with my holding similar views? Is it the 'punching up v punching down' double standard, were the same thing is perfectly fine for some to do yet deemed totally unacceptable for others?

Anyway, apologies (to an extent) if some took offence. I only meant it from a footballing point of view and stand by it in that regards.

You mean fullbacks? We don't have good fullbacks and our wingers are from the Eredivisie, but 4-3-3 is what the players prefer, even those that aren't performing in it (Memphis, Virgil, Wijnaldum, Blind), so we're stuck with Berghuis who can't beat a lamp post and Gakpo on the other side can't be expected to carry a game on his debut.

Dumfries proved LVG wrong about his match fitness bullocks and did more in 1 minute than Timber in 92mins. Bergwijn and Danjuma have played wingback in the past and I'm fairly certain Chong, Rensch and maybe even Willems in the future would make good ones as well. We have 3 pretty good strikers, Memphis, Malen, Weghorst, so Vangle is absolutely right that this squad is best suited to play 5-3-2. The system wasn't the problem under De Boer, it was De Boer.

Holland will win it comfortably imo. 4 of their remaining 6 games are at home.

Turkey are too inconsistent. They've now dropped 4 points from 2 goal leads against Latvia and Montenegro. They haven't even played a proper away game yet. 3 fixtures have been at home and the Norway 'away' game was on a neutral and empty stadium in Spain. Can't see them going on a consistent run.

Norway still have two tough away games in Turkey and Holland. But win the next two against the bottom teams and that's potentially top of the table and nice momentum going into the October fixtures. If we win the fixtures we're supposed to win (Gibraltar (H), Montenegro (H), 2xLatvia) we will at worst be 3 points behind Holland before facing them away on the final day. And then hope Haaland can pull a rabbit out of the hat in Holland...

Oh my bad then. I thought "least favorite nation" referred to the country and not their football team. Yeah, feck their football team, green cnuts. I'm fine with that. Sorry!

Thanks. :)

It was probably clumsily worded in my initial post, tbh. I was typing it quickly and put 'my favourite ever player scoring twice late on to beat my least favourite nation'. It's an international football thread on a football site, and I solely meant 'nation' in that context as 'national side' - and didn't realise it might be interpreted as a hatred of all things Irish.

What a bottlejob by Ireland hHA.

Good job Portugal, but this kind of performances is why they struggle against teams that are as good as them, and why they got eliminated by Uruguay and Belgium in their last 2 international tournaments, they should be playing better with the players they have.
For that they need a better manager

I'm quite the opposite. I'm a huge fan of the Irish national team because of the misery they inflict on their supporters.

feck off Ireland, cheat now. I actually love Ireland but still

5 minutes of added time turned out perfect, should have been 15
A portuguese, complaining about shithousing. Where is the world coming to :wenger:

Both Dumfries and Malacia play fullback in a 4-3-3, especially Malacia is nothing to write home about, but he will run up and down the pitch all game long and make life shit for his opponent. The way we played yesterday Blind and Timber just station themselves high up the pitch without moving, simply because they lack the speed and lungs to keep going back on forth. Our Wingers may be from the Eredivisie, but the likes of Norway are hardly from the later stages of the CL. And Gakpo is a very talented dude who I think can go quite far (even if he wasn't very good yesterday) We should be winning this poule with two fingers in the nose.

I think currently we are just hoping for a flash of brilliance from Memphis, but he's been terrible for Oranje in the last few games and when he's terrible he really trancends to a whole new level of terriblesness unseen anywhere in the world.

I don't need to read the 9 pages to ask the question why do we need threads like these on players who haven't played a single minute for us after transfer?

Doesn't mean what's their history is, it's ancient and we are complete different team now.

Wrong thread?

Big shock in Asian qualifying....Oman just scored last minute winner away to Japan!

Looking at the stats and seems Oman have dominated the game, more shots on target, more corners etc.

Australia, Saudi Arabia and China also in that group so going to be a good old scrap for the top 2 spots.

Suspect we're gonna see more of such shocks both in AFC and other continents, due to strange hosting circumstances. Almost all heavy-weights also struggled in Europe yesterday.

In Asia, Australia and China are playing their home games in Qatar. Vietnam (first time ever in the final qualifying round) will be playing matches in Hanoi, but empty stadium. Group B naturally has two teams that never play at home (Syria and Iraq) and Iran and Korea will play home games with no spectators as I last checked.

Group A is really a scrap, but group B should be a lot more predictable on paper. It's the 4th world cup qualifier in a row now that Iran and Korea have been grouped together and Japan and Australia together.

It's beyond a parody now...Australia has been part of AFC for 15 years and never have they played Iran for example.

Ah yes didn't know what restrictions were still in place with covid but pretty much home advantage nulified due to what you say above. Iran playing infront of 0 instead of 100k + at Azadi makes a bit of a difference.

South Korea 0 Iraq 0 another surprise score.

Actually really looking forward to how Syria do in this. They really pushed Australia hard in the play offs last time and would've had a good shot v Honduras if they'd got through. Some story if they make a world cup one day.

It’s okay when we do it :)
It's a work of art when you do it

We italians are understandably proud of our shithousing ability, take great pride in it and watching us outshithouse Spain(also great at it) is one of life's great satisfactions

And we don't even try it against you lot. It's a futile endeavor. We bow to the true masters of the art :D
