International Friendlies May/June

Cameroon equalize 87th minute. France has one of the best squads in the tournament, but just can’t see them succeeding. All it takes is one of these poor results and the home crowd turns against them. Add some public bs between Deschamps and some players and we’ve got a disaster at hands again.

Edit: Payet, who has been superb, makes it 3-2 with a wonderful free kick  I still stand by what I wrote earlier.

God how good is payet at setpieces? deschamps has a tough Job selecting his first 11 right now.

Payet must be the best dead ball specialist at the moment.

The defense is still a bit worrying, let's hope we can keep outscoring our opponents because for sure we will concede some against the best sides.

Poor goalkeeping or not it still got fecking sick curve from such distance and angle, it's going in right below the top corner. Payet is crazy, I seriously wouldn't mind him as our #10 if there was a chance.

Its cameroon and he still has to prove himself in his second season at West Ham.

I think Martial will find it difficult to nail down a place in the starting XI at the Euros.

He'll start on the left. You can't really keep Martial on the bench.
Same could be said for Payet, Griezmann and arguably Coman after the seasons they've all had.

Don't think Griezmann and Martial are competing for the same spot. Griezmann can do a job on the wing, but he's much better central.

As for Payet and Coman - haven't watched the latter much, but he's a right winger, isn't he? Payet is also better through the middle IMO.

It'd be daft to pick other players, who are much more suited to central roles, for the left wing IMO. Martial had a brilliant season and is most effective on the left wing. Didn't set the world alight in his last couple of games for France, but it's still a no brainer for me.

Griezmann will definitely play on the wing at the Euros, think that's been confirmed by some French posters on here (@JPRouve )? That means Griezmann and Giroud are nailed on starters in the front three, leaving only one spot at left wing for Payet, Coman or Martial. The first two played right wing for the most part of last season but Coman lined up on the left tonight for example (at least according to FFF's Twitter account, I didn't watch the game). I think tonight's line-up will be their starting XI apart from Griezmann in for Coman.

I'm aware he'll likely play on the wing, but that doesn't change the fact he's better in a central position.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Leaving Martial on the bench would be a mistake IMO, but only Deschamps knows what will happen.

@RobinLFC , you're right on pretty much everything there. Griezmann will start every game, mostly on the right wing, Gignac and Giroud might interchange up-front, and Payet, Martial and Coman are fighting for the LW spot. It's anyone's guess which one will be prefered at that point, though.

Coman doesn't have a side, he can play on both wings that's why he has been selected over someone like Ben Arfa. As for Griezmann, I don't how France will play but if we don't play in 4312, Griezmann will be on the wing and Martial will compete with Payet and Coman.

Has Deschamps even tried an attacking trio of Martial/Payet - Griezmann - Coman?

Good mix of options for France to have, anyway. All three provide something different: Payet a set piece specialist, Coman versatile winger and Martial more of an inside forward.

I personally hope Martial doesn't play a minute and comes back to us without a scratch.

No, because Giroud is his striker and he plays well for France and also because he had to rest these players and only give them halves of games.

He'll be fine. Playing in the Euros will be an invaluable experience that will only help his development as an attacking player.

Well, if he's "his striker", then fair enough. Still think it wouldn't hurt him to try it, though, but I guess he wants to play with a target man.

I don't think that's the kind of attitude that produces top players. It would be far better wishing he destroyed the competition scoring 10 goals and bringing home the trophy because that will prove an amazing experience in his development curve.

Aye. We can't just lock him in the basement every time he has to play for France.

And imagine being called up for your national team for a major competition in your home country then not playing a minute. Different players react in different ways but it could destroy him.

my attitude doesn't really matter, I just rather he didn't play and was fresh for us preseason having just played 47 games for us. I would be delighted for him to score a bunch of goals, but I honestly wished that none of our players played a minute of this competition. That's just my opinion I guess. Rest is just as important if not more at times.

It will probably happen in the future but people need to remember that Martial almost exclusively played on the wing at pro level, he didn't played there for United this season and France have plenty of strikers, Lacazette is probably better than Martial as a CF, it won't last long but that's the current reality, if Martial was seen as a striker for France he would be the 4th option without Benzema.

Objectively Giroud, Benzema, Lacazette, Gignac and even Gameiro are better strikers than Martial, they all score a lot and they all actually play the position.

I meant trying the trio of Martial (on the left) - Griezmann (central) - Coman (on the right), not trying Martial as a striker. I think he's most effective on the left, so I'd like to see him continue in that position.

I know Giroud has been a reliable striker for you guys, but I just think it wouldn't hurt to try the suggested trio as it has frightening potential IMO. Of course, it's too late for experiments, so maybe somewhere down the line.

Anyways, I wish you good luck for the tournament and hopefully Martial shows his class as well.

It was funny after the World Cup that players like Robben, Boateng, Kroos, Müller had great seasons and the World Cup winners with no or next to no minutes had all real bad seasons...

But for this young ones it is their first big tournament and they should be ok getting minutes... and Coman and Martial are good enough that they will get.

Would you play Griezmann as a lone striker in a "fictitious" team? I know I wouldn't, there is a big flaw in that attack and you don't have enough time to work around it.

I honestly think it could work, but it all depends on the style of play. The trio could be devastating in a counter attacking style, but as I already said - it's obviously way too late for experiments and probably won't ever happen under Deschamps.
