Seriously? It's blatantly a dig at the journalists. The fact that he didn't want to explain himself explicitly doesn't mean it didn't mean anything or that he didn't mean it.
The fact that he wrote it down beforehand and asked for the English words trawler and seagulls lends weight to that.

It means nothing in the sense that he didn't say anything of note. He 'put a mirror up to the journalists' by describing them as seagulls looking for scraps, when everyone expected a grand statement of contrition or whatever, because it's football and he believes what's said at press conferences is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. He also admits to having a bit of a laugh at their expense.
There's nothing to be analysed and there's nothing philosophical about it because there's no great mystery - the meaning is clear and not really profound in any way.
