For all you Indians out there.. what a moment.. we have won our first ever Individual gold. Abhinav Bindra in 10m air rifle shooting. hats off to you sir.

For all others, this might be a normal thing for your countries, but just huge for us!!

The Medal Ceremony

Great, indeed. My only concern is the poor chap will find things hard with the media glare and hype. Hope he keeps getting better.

Thats great news, fair play to Bindra. He'll be the nations Olympic hero for quite sometime now, with a bit of luck

I've got a question for ya mate, does India really care about other sports people other than Cricketers?

I get the impression you're only a one-sport country & everything else can go get fecked!

Seems odd for such a large country.

Makes me appreciate just how much we punch above our weight in terms of population size and medal haul (same could be said for Australia really). But still people complain.

I suppose as India becomes more developed, they'll be up there with the big boys.

The money spend by likes of UK, US etc on training is on a different level to India. Bindra himself had to go begging to loads of sponsors from time to time to meet costs.

was so fecking happy when I heard it in coll

feckin hell, a gold! For the last Olympics PWC predicted that India would get 4 medals, we only managed one. This time they've predicted we'll win 6. 6! fecking hope we do.

aye, on the majority we are. but theres a lot of us who do follow other games closely. cricket is just a little (too much) in your face..

Good, he was always touted to have massive potential. Finally fulfilled it.

he is the reigning world champion at the moment.. so this is like a confirmation of what he has done prior to this

6?? well, theres rathore to come tomo, saina female in badminton is a game away, lee-hesh maybe? and theres this kumar guy in boxing; cant see beyond that. six?? how?/

Can't find the breakdown of medals according to sports but here's one of several reports that has PWC's predictions.

LONDON (AP)—China should win one more medal than the United States at the Beijing Olympics—88 to 87—and top the overall table for the first time, according to a survey released Monday by accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“As the host nation in Beijing and (with) an economy which has grown very strongly since 2004, the medal ‘target’ of 88 for China according to our model is much higher than its actual medal totals in Athens (63) or Sydney (59),” said John Hawksworth, the report’s author.

China was third in overall medals at Athens 2004, behind first-place United States (102) and Russia (92). China was second in gold medals behind the U.S. in 2004—32 to 36.

Hawksworth predicted Russia will drop to third place at Beijing with 79 medals overall, down 13, followed by Germany (43), Australia (41), Japan (34), France (30), Italy (29), Britain (28) and South Korea (27).

The report lists significant factors behind a country’s performance at the Olympics since 1988, including population, average income level and being the host nation.

“The bottom line is that size matters, but it is not everything,” Hawksworth said. “David can sometimes slay Goliath in the Olympic arena.”

India remains a “significant underperformer” and is predicted to get six medals in Beijing, compared with one silver medal at Athens.

“The most plausible explanation is that, with the exception of (field) hockey, Indian sport tends to be focused on events that are not included in the Olympics, most importantly cricket,” Hawksworth said.

Last year, Italian Olympic official Luciano Barra forecast the United States would beat China in both gold medals and overall medals won.

At best we will win a couple more. One more in shooting and one in boxing/weightlifting.

Great news. Well done lad, you made me and everybody else proud.

He will be forgotten in a couple of months. Only cricketers and female athletes get the hype here. Its the same old news everytime. A male athlet wins a medal and the media will be wanking over how its always females who make us proud.

Brilliant stuff

Now lets try and win in one in a proper sport.

Tonight I am in a partying mood.

After East Germany, USSR and USA to a certain extent China....

India is slowly establishing a stranglehold in all individual events

Long it may continue..

I am sure we can win 23 gold medals if not cheated by biased ASEAN referees,

Bharath Rathna for Bindra...

I think we have a chance at badminton. The Saina girl. Bronze, hopefully.

Quarter-finals on the 13th.

So, is this the first Indian to have won gold or the first person from India (born, bread, and stayed?).

This flag waving is retarded.

You hate people who say "RIP" about people they don't know, think internet forums aren't moderated well enough and you dislike people being patriotic about their country. The majority of us have different perspective on things and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, keep your opinions to yourself in these cases and don't ruin threads where WE want to congratulate a person from our country.

You seem to be incapable of acknowledging that people might have differing views to yours and keep bleating on about the same shit till the thread is ruined. Please stop it.

Weaste, a football forum may not be the best place to lecture about flag-waving. You're from Manchester and support United. What's the difference between an American supporting the US or an indian supporting India

Gold has been won 8 times in Hockey before, but never in any individual competitions.

After Olympic gold, cash rewards flow in for Bindra

Abhinav Bindra's gold haul for the country in the Beijing Olympics has not only brought laurels to the shooter but it is also raining money in plenty for him.

The Punjab government Monday announced a cash reward of Rs.10 million (Rs.1 crore) for the shooter as per its sports policy after Bindra won India's first individual gold medal in Olympics history. He won the title in the 10-metre air rifle shooting event Monday.

'We in Punjab are proud of Abhinav Bindra's remarkable feat. We hope that his performance is a morale booster to other youngsters to do well in sports,' Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said.

Though Abhinav has lived and studied mostly in Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, his family is now based at their farmhouse near Zirakpur town in Punjab, 15 km from here.

The neighbouring Haryana government too announced a reward of Rs.2.5 million (Rs.25 lakh) to Abhinav for his feat and the Chandigarh administration announced another cash reward of Rs.500,000 for Abhinav Bindra.

The Madhya Pradesh government also announced a cash prize of Rs.500,000 for the shooter.
