Indian Politics

All of you are thinking that I am saying BJP DEFINITELY had this planned that they will get 3 out of 70. That will be ridiculous. I am maintaining every time that there is CHANCE that either BJP or Congress or both had seen the loss coming (definitely not this bad though) and altered their strategy to limit future repercussions.

Lost cause, mate. The fact that RaGa was campaigning and BJP spent boatloads means they don't.

Whatever benefits Shah/Modi may or may not gain in the future because of this loss, it's not worth the loss of that aura of invincibility.

Also, very briefly, if they wanted to lose, and lose this badly, getting 33% of the vote was not a good strategy. Any other election and AAP would not be at 54%, and 33% would lead to a very close contest. Repeating myself: more than an anti-BJP vote (voteshare remaining constant), this is a vote for AAP.

On the contrary TMH, it was highly imperative that BJP and Congress put up a decent showing in this election to negate the threat of AAP. Which they tried (BJP with their Modi charm) and Congress (with ermm... lol), but they failed badly. I hope that this is a watershed moment in Indian politics.

However, I strongly suspect that BJP will continue to be BJP, AAP will make a lot of noise or they may do reasonably decent and maybe develop Delhi into their stronghold, where people won't mind them and we'll be having similar conversations in another 5 years.

what is it ?

It's the Krishna mantra of Hinduism. Like I said it is the wrong thread for it but was just wondering about it. In my city they have some sort of get together every Wednesday and I've been tempted to go along to see what it is about. To tell you the truth I don't know a great deal about it, I've heard people say Hare Krishna many times and just recently been listening to the Radha Krsna Temple album. I'll probably leave it as that as I don't want to go off course of the context of the thread. Might pop along to one of the gatherings at some point in time though.

Ah it might be Hare Krishna chant and probably some Iskcon branch. I am not very religious so don't know what do these guys actually do in those gatherings though.

Do you like pot? If yes, then these guys are useful. My family likes to go to Vrindivan (Like Bangalore is for IT, Vrindavan is for Krishna) often, and the times they are able to coerce me into going with them I alwaystry to find one of these guys and they always have the good stuff.

On a more serious note: It most definitely is the International society for Krishna consciousness, more popularly known as Iskcon. The full chant goes -

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Ram
Rama Rama Hare Hare

It is known as the Maha mantra, or the Krishna Mantra. It's a 16 word chant.

I am not into organized religion and they look more like a cult to me, but give it a shot if you want to. I know people who have found peace in that Mantra. Iskcon is a huge organization with a worldwide presence. They do a lot of good work with their food programs for underprivileged children to other social activities.

Are these leaks going to be the first big scandal of the bjp rule? Can't believe we didn't even have CCTV cameras installed in all these government buildings till recently..

On a side note, the coal block auction seems to have raised quite a good sum..

The PM is a good orator, but I get the feeling that the BJP won more because of Congress' suicide. So one of the things Modi said during his PM campaign was that we should increase spending on education. I'll have my eyes tuned in on the budget to see if that happens. I have my doubts though.

Like what?
Land Acquisition Bill.
Article 66A = Freedom of Speech/Expression.
The details of assets of PMO and Ministers are not available to the public on the website anymore. (A bit of nitpicking, but yeah)

This, from someone who claimed good governance and transparency.

Budget is coming out today, right?

I feel rather than the policies of the govt, its the RSS and the so called secular people in BJP will take the govt down. Just days after Modi's statement regarding the different religions and the minorities, there was a comment on Mother Teresa by the RSS chief.

Alright, the third one seems like a blunder. *facepalm*

They are an annoying sideshow, and it's a shame if they continue to digress on the good work elsewhere.

I don't know overall but I know he's cut the IIT budget in nominal (not just real) terms. After the ridiculous, stupid, and doomed promise of an IIT in every state. This will halt all construction on the 8 new IIT campuses.
Also, after promising, in October, a hike in stipend for PhD students, the government has now gone back on its word.

Far more alarmingly,

Why spend on SciTech when we've already achieved interplanetary travel :wenger:

It is clearly because of IIN. Who needs IIT and so much of education related investment when there is IIN everywhere? Smart work by iDEA and Government.

I'm actually expecting a very good budget tomorrow. Or at least laying down the foundation for a better one next year.

I am too. I hope there is good news for capital markets and infrastructure and some concrete measures related to fiscal deficit. Setting up a good base on which economy can thrive in future years is key. Far too often India has wasted opportunity to progress by trying to appease the poor and alienating those who actually bring in money into the system. Of course development of everyone in the society is key but that comes with making economy attractive for people with money, who will put it in system for gains and the secondary effects will create job opportunities. Just taxing the rich and bringing in more & more taxes does nothing but take economy down.

Education needs fundamental changes rather than mindless pumping of money. Usually the toppers are who have good handwriting and ratta maro'ing skills. Creativity and original thinking is discouraged. Mumbai uni even issued a circular for engineering students that they might be given a 0 if there handwriting wasn't good! so are we testing there knowledge in enginerring or there handwriting ? Ive witnessed students who have understood the subjet matter and tought other students only to get lower marks because they didn't have a good handwriting or ratta skills to copy/paste the whole damn thing. They then either get demotivated or go abroad and help innovate things while were stuck with glorified clerks (which is what the british wanted when they formulated our education policy, which hasn't changed since then).

Corporate tax reduced to 25% from 30% over next 4 years. 70k crore to be invested in infrastructure. Nice. Using this infra investment efficiently and without money lost in bribes will be key.

Good budget overall. No changes in income tax slabs but they are already quite good.

Service tax increased

In delhi were already paying around 1/3rd of the bill in service tax and surcharges at eating joints.

It will probably increase next year as well as GST will be implemented. I hope it is deferred though.

Achche din indeed. Increase fecking service tax which means increase prices of everything anyone wants to buy.

I don't think AAP has a great economic policy but at least they think about common people when making a budget. BJP's skewed towards the wealthy.

If AAP is to make economic policy of nation, they will bring everyone down to mediocrity than having policies better for economy. The 'common man' should stop feeling entitled for all policies in their favour and rich always doing all the tax paying thing as well as taking responsibility to invest money into system which will bring in job opportunities for common man. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The 2% surcharge on wealth of 'super rich' is going to bring in more money than previous wealth tax so wealthy are also paying more tax than before. I don't see how it is pro-wealthy then and no, because they have a 'lot' of money they should be paying more tax is as shit an argument as there can ever be.
Common man can have up to over 4.44 lakhs as tax exempt income which is big amount. The tax slab currently for income tax is quite generous.

that's a joke and you should know why

the BJP is like the Repulican Party in the US, trying to get as much as possible in to their friends in corporate.
