India vs England

MS Dhoni:
Dhoni praised Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann, who outbowled his spinners, but he said James Anderson was crucial. "Anderson bowled very well throughout the series on wickets that there was no help for the fast bowler," he said. "That was crucial. He tested the batsmen all the time. In his second or third spell when he started to get reverse and yet the ball was slightly on the harder side. The major difference between the two sides was James Anderson who bowled really well."

ForeverGiggs:
Jimmy needs conditions to prosper, I said that before, I'll say the same now and in the future.

A friend of mine was raving about a young English spinner. Don't remember his name but he told me that he was quality.

Scott Borthwick? Leg spinner.

Danny Briggs is supposed to be good. Left arm orthodox.

Yes he was talking about Briggs. Is he any good?

Very tight spinner but doesn't bat at all, and as far as I know isn't a big spinner or wicket taker. Will admit to not having followed him a lot though, but there is quite a bit of excitement around him I think, for whatever reason.

Briggs I mean, of course.

He's a left arm off spinner who spins the ball and is a wicket taker.

You see there was a time when effigies of Cook & Anderson would be burnt on the streets of India tonight, but I get the feeling your hearts aren't in it anymore, that there was an inevitability about this that you guys knew was coming sooner or later.

Do you think Indian Test cricket will be back any time soon?

Are you guys hopeful for the future or do you think T20 has destroyed Indian Test cricket?

Borthwick and Kerrigan are the two who are in the Lions, Borthwick will be a good test bowler but he's probably 5 years away.

I think this next generation of English players will be very, very good. Stokes, Bairstow, Root, Buttler, Harris, Mills, Topley and others all have the potential to be good test players.

He's not, he's barely played in the Hampshire first class side last year and doesn't play lions 4-day stuff, very much a one day 20/20 bowler. A very good one though.

Let's hope this gives our lad a kick and gets them performing again. That was embarassing. Not the defeat- just the manner of it. No fight at all.

I'm delighted with the win obviously but our inept displays against Pakistan and SA have put some perspective on how good England are. Our bowlers are up there amongst the best in the world but our batsman are too often inconsistent. We batted well this series but then again India's bowlers are not the same quality as SA or Pakistan. It looks good on paper with a spine of Cook, Trott, Pieterson, Bell and Prior but it needs to be a lot more consistent for us to reach the next level.

Nice to somebody disagrees with my opinion.
Cook's still not turned 28. Broad's still 26. Then you have all these world class youngsters like Finn, Root, Bairstow, Taylor, Meaker, Borthick, Woakes, etc. etc. etc. Enough evidence that England have real world class quality and strength in depth coming through in both the bowling & batting.

Yeah only around 90% people

Yeah right. Well done for the stereotyping.

Sums it up. Wouldn't include bell in that list when it comes to the sub continent. It's easy to make runs coming in after cook has ground the opposition into submission. He's not going to do that against better bowling attacks. I think people who are hailing a turnaround from England are seriously underestimating how terrible our bowling is. Cook has become a very good player in the sub continent but the others, we will probably not know because the next sub continent tour is a long way off. The bowling is excellent. They've proved themselves in 3 different venues now.

Unfortunately, I think you are wrong on so many levels. The cricket supporting crowd in India, though fanatic, are known to be quiet sporting. Chennai crowds regularly give standing ovations to opposing teams and players if they play well, even Pakistan was applauded off the field.

The effigy burning is normally reserved for our own players, or if any controversial statements are made by particular players. Ponting is hated the most in India I'd think, but I don't think there's that much hate for effigy burning for even silly Ricky. You are wrong about expectations as well. Although in the Caf, we were expecting an Indian victory, the press hype and the Indian player interviews are resulted in this being billed as the revenge series and Indians will go on and win it finally (like Forevergiggs). So there's a lot of disappointment out here in India now.

Regarding if we'll make it back, this is hardly the nadir of Test Cricket for India. We were beaten by a talented and more importantly, committed team playing for one goal. I still think we'll beat majority of nations at home and with a few well timed moves, we should be back on the top 3 at least.

Although I'll continue to support the Windies

That's because he's still 20 or whatever. But he does spin the ball and takes wickets as his junior stats suggest.

If he can become that bowler it would be great, don't see it though.

Some of the TV blurbs were embarrassing. That one about :"Angrezonki Band Bajayegi" etc. was offensive to taste.

No harm intended, although not recently there was a time when there used to be a lot of effigy burning going on, tbf.

I can't remember the last time we've burned an effigy of a foreign cricketer due to losing a match.

Forget that he's factually wrong, I find the fact that he's somehow trying to draw parallels between burning effigies and the state of Indian test cricket and its fans, more ridiculous.

We should all go out and burn an effigy of Cook to show our hearts are still in it.

Ok. Game. How many Caftards are ready to join? :D Just to keep Colin happy.

Re the 'Revenge' stuff...Dhoni was asked this very question in the presser afterwards, and he turned the question back on the media, saying, it was you guys who had to fill column inches, and the air space so mentioned things like revenge. That they as a team, never saw it as something like that because they knew England were a good side, and wouldn't simply roll over.

Tbf, the press & the Indian players have been quite dignified in defeat(regardless of the bitching about the pitches during the series), giving England credit for a job well done, and not making a ton of excuses.

Obviously, it's a bit harder for the casual fan, but I think most serious followers of Indian cricket too avoided going down the sour grapes route.

Dhoni's wrong.

Gambhir, Kohli and Ishant all acted like twats and fueled it, with their "we will get you back once you come to India" rubbish.

That's a bit of bluster you'd expect from anyone after they've just been given a really good kicking. Because once the series started(and even with India off to a good start, the Indian camp didn't seem to be OTT to me - then again, I haven't really followed things THAT closely)

Kohli is a bit of a jerk off though, I know Ganguly brought about the change in mentality, and Team India became a lot more in your face and confrontational under him, but Kohli seems to be taking this to the extreme.

His, look at me, 'I'm tough...I'm intense and I don't take a backward step' thing is pathetic.

You don't have to act like a cnut to earn 'respect' or 'cred'. Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman were respected almost universally by all opponents, and none of them made it a point to act like a douchebag.

Effigies have been burnt in the past, it can not be denied.

None of the effigies bore any real resemblance to anyone though, so they could have been anyone, local or otherwise.

Anyway, doesn't seem to happen these days.

They burn effigies of their own players, you demented sod.

I don't think test cricket is as popular in India anyway. Now if it was a WC semi or something the effigies may have been out in full swing.

Were any burnt following the Test Series?

There are many effigies are burnt in India due to political differences, and some nutjob in the past may have burnt a couple. But it's very isolated. It's like saying racism is rife at Chelsea and Liverpool due to... oh

But Samabachan is right, stop posting Colin

Colin being an idiot again. No surprises here.

India's bowling attack is so weak, even West Indies would have beaten us at home with similar display to England.

Worst attack in history and India never had a good all around attack, shows how bad the current one is.

He's ignorant, I'd say...he's touched upon a point though. How many actually care that India lost a Test series at home? How many care that we lost 8 tests away in Ozland and England before this? How many are angry for the sake of being angry, for the consumption of social media and for a topic of conversation? how many actually watched even a ball of this series, and didn't rely on media reportage and word of mouth to influence their opinion.

How many will go and scream their lungs out, post pictures, buy jerseys and have a blast when Delhi Daredevils play Mumbai Indians next?

There was a time when as an 11 year old, it would hurt for days on end knowing that the Saffers had beaten us on our own ground, or as an 8 year old, seeing Derbyshire humiliate a full strength Indian team, or even waking up at 4-5 am to watch us in Australia right through the terrible 90s and promising 2000s.

I've lost that feeling, and I have a feeling a lot of my peers have as well. The new generation couldn't give a tuppenny feck about Test cricket, it's just about updating scorelines every couple of hours and abusing the non-performers, who don't disappoint nowadays.

Don't think that's specific to India. The majority of the new generation of fans prefer 20-20 cricket to test cricket all over the world. It's only natural; 20-20's far more suited to young people with low attention spans. You would have been the same if you had the option of watching the IPL back when you were 10 years old. It's a big worry.

Perhaps the IPL is to blame after all then. Offering big cash incentives to any decent player to play limited overs cricket is not my idea of fun and to be honest, when it first appeared on tv, I wasn't impressed by it one bit. For me, limited 50 over games decided by D/L if it rains is a great deal better and makes a long journey worth it. Again, watching a 5 day test match is a great deal better than watching IPL too as so many things can happen. As long as the IPL is still there, less and less people will be interested to watch it or even play at test level because there is better money to be had in the IPL.
