Think the easy explanation is that during the time Brazil were the dominant force in SA(late 50's and 60's to early 70's) there were only 5 SA championships.Just as an aside. I always thought it was weird how much that Argentina side struggled in the World Cup, yet dominated the Copa Americas either side of it. Brazil conversely were nowhere in the continental competition, but head and shoulders above in the World Cup. I'm sure there's an explanation which I've just been too lazy to find out about.
Brazil withdrew in 67 and the only two times they fielded a strong side were in 57 and 59(first one as there was another edition later that year).
Both in 57 and 59 they finished 2nd to Argentina and in 59 the difference was only them being held by a strong Peru side.
In the early 50's Uruguay and Argentina were the dominant figures on the continent and 75 onwards there was Peru and again Argentina when Brazil were refreshing their golden generation.
At least to me of course..
