Just as an aside. I always thought it was weird how much that Argentina side struggled in the World Cup, yet dominated the Copa Americas either side of it. Brazil conversely were nowhere in the continental competition, but head and shoulders above in the World Cup. I'm sure there's an explanation which I've just been too lazy to find out about.
Think the easy explanation is that during the time Brazil were the dominant force in SA(late 50's and 60's to early 70's) there were only 5 SA championships.

Brazil withdrew in 67 and the only two times they fielded a strong side were in 57 and 59(first one as there was another edition later that year).

Both in 57 and 59 they finished 2nd to Argentina and in 59 the difference was only them being held by a strong Peru side.

In the early 50's Uruguay and Argentina were the dominant figures on the continent and 75 onwards there was Peru and again Argentina when Brazil were refreshing their golden generation.

At least to me of course..

Yeah. Still find to hard to relate what Argentina did in the Copas versus the shitshow in Sweden. I mean they pumped Brazil 3-0 en route to success in 1957, and were unbeaten throughout the 1959 campaign when Brazil were arguably stronger with Pele maturing. And it was a decent generation of Argies - Carrizo, Roma, Corbatta, Sivori, Rossi, Sanfilippo, etc.

On the other side if I'm picking loopholes, Da Guia as well I'm not sure how high I'd rate him and perhaps needs to be replaced at this stage.

Interesting view, I’ve never seen that opinion before in these drafts. As far as I can tell he’s widely been regarded as Brazil’s best ever CB and amongst the very best of that era.

May not get a chance to come back online. Final thoughts on the game

a) Charly has an advantage with with a better attack which is somewhat offset by me having a much better defense

b) I have a much superior midfield with Mazzola playing in a role that he won't get to play his normal style. Adding in Ceulemans and i will be able to overload the midfield. There is a lot of onus on Rossi to defend which i don't think he will be able to do. Hamrin and Dzajic will require the ball to them released quickly from the midfield which i don't see happening.

c) As good as Hamrin and Dzajic are, Tom Finney vs. Demyanenko is the battle which i would expect to win. Pedernera on Jorginho is also very favorable to me

Good game @Charly and all the best for the last 2 hours. Could go either way

Well couple of reasons mate.

First he's from an era without much footage, so naturally you'd take those regards with a pinch of salt.

Secondly his fame is based mainly due to the 1938 WC, but at that time he was off his peak and his defensive unit conceded 10 goals in 4 games on the road to the 3rd place and the team itself was based on their great attacking football not on the solidity at the back.

When I was researching on Meazza and the grainy short footage of the time he looked off the pace, slow and very clumsy and one of the main reasons why Brazil should've been sent packing in the first round against Poland.

^^ He's Hercules from that video.

another foul there causing penalty and the second goal for Italy.

BTW, this channel has a lot of old footage from that era and up until the late 50's:

and he was voted team of the tournament. :wenger:

Ah well.. Looks like tagging people backfired :(

Congratulations @Charly Good luck for the next games

Sorry, I can't log on at my new work and didn't vote because it was a headache to choose yesterday

Humm, your team was more balanced but Charly has some big names

You were in a position to massively upgrade your team as it seems you don't have a lot of players born in the 50s-60s-70s-80s
I was hoping to get through this round and upgrade.. In hindsight should have stuck to the WM
