Importance of the January 2020 Transfer Window

Greenwood, Garner, Gomes, Chong and even Tuanzebe should be all out on loan, playing week in week out to championship or lower table teams and gaining much needed experience and exposure. I think United need to sort their loan system in January.

Also we absolutely must need a defensive midfielder / deep lying play-maker in January, even if Fred adopts that role. Either of Kalvin Phillips or Sander Berge would be a good signing, especially if Matic leaves.

Also we need to sort out our rightwing / Striker situation.

Sancho actually looks gettable in January, if we can sign him, it will immediately give huge boost to not only team's profile and may also pave the way for future star signings. If we get Sancho, then we should also buy Mandzukic as Martial backup. Either them or we should go all out for Haaland in Jan along with McNeil. Sign them both and that's our attack sorted for upcoming years.

Yeah, whether it's a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 isn't really as big of a deal as getting a quality midfielder in to join Pogba and McTominay. Balance would be nice but it's secondary to quality considering Pogba and McTominay aren't the kind of midfielders who create redundancies like a pure #10 (who you need at least one defensively quality player) or an N'Didi type (who you need basically need 2 good midfield ballplayers alongside/ahead of).

There's a lot of types of players who could form a good midfield with McTominay and Pogba, whether that's a holding mid or deeper playmakeer freeing McTominay up to chase and go box to box a bit more, or a #10 that would mean he has to sit deeper and focus on that.

The loan system works about as well as a loan system can work, loans are a crap shoot anyway.

Tom Cleverley had amazing loans, didn't much matter. Fosu-mensah had shit ones, Ryan Giggs never had any, the overall effect is largely hard to even judge, in theory more experience is better but it's not a marker of much really.

Greenwood is getting minutes and is 18, we are an injury away from needing to start Garner, never mind loaning him.

Gomes and Chong are, if rumors are to be believed stalling on new contracts, in which case it's strategic decision not to play or loan them until it's resolved.

Tuanzebe is injured.

The only one, of all you listed I'd be comfortable letting go on loan is Chong and there reasons prevailing that. Can't let Garner or Greenwood go out on loan without signing someone in each position.

Agree with all your points, my point was we must include experienced players in our squad and shouldn't be relying on such you g players to take the burden, they should be loaned out where they can play without the pressure of United and hone their skills. We need to recruit quality players up top especially so that we can adopt our game according to situations and against low blocks.
 
I feel like Eriksen/Olmo, Phillips/Can and Mandzukic in January would be decent. We then need to bring in Maddison, Haaland/Werner and a decent RW like Ziyech next summer.
 
We need goals. Simple as that. We are not getting a #10/CAM in this window, our only options I'd say are a CF or a CDM. If it's a case of one or the other, financially, give me the striker every single day. Haaland needs to be the one. Chuck the money at him, he will score goals from January onwards - he's got the physicality and hunger to do very well in this league. If we can't get him until summer, maybe it would have to be Mandzukic on loan or something. But we need something different up front to add a few more goals.
 
Matheus Pereira is an attacking midfielder (can play LW or RW too) with Sporting. Currently at loan at WBA in the Championship. In 8 starts (11 matches), over 1014 minutes he's scored 3 goals and 6 assists this season. WBA have an agreement to buy him for about £8m if he plays 32 matches for them. United could gazump this. He'd probably cost less than Dan James did. I'm not entirely convinced. He has the skill but maybe not the pace nor physicality. He's take games we could be giving to Angel Gomes. This is a deal we could easily do in January. We could ever sell WBA Lingard in exchange!
 
We definitely need two midfield players and a striker I would say, they may not be top top quality, but we could use them to bolster our squad. I have mentioned players in another thread that would certainly help with that, Doucoure from Watford or Phillips from Leeds (test the water with a bid), Mandzukic and Can from Juve, Rakitic from Barca, all good proven players that would help us until the academy lads get up to speed. If we got Haaland in January, then Mandzukic would not be signed.

Yeah I think that ship has sailed. It would make Woodward and Ole look pretty stupid, also, so they might swerve it for that reason too. Could have had him in the summer for 50% of what he'd cost in January etc.....not a good look for a bloke already having to defend his transfer behaviour in front of a camera.

I also think that ship has sailed and reckon the club are now in for Haaland. Fits the sort of profile we are now looking towards. Very good young player with a lot of potential.

If Pogba stays (and thats a big if) and we have a long term target in mind to complement McT (or an upgrade) and Pogba I would not mind giving Matuidi a one and half year contract in January (Juve would prob let him go). Matuidi, Pogba and McT would carry us another season on a high level while we rebuild the midfield, which surely is needed.

That would be a mistake IMO, He's not great on the ball and is better as an all action box to box IMO.
 
So quite a few (unreliable!) reports around at the moment saying you're going for Sancho and Haaland in the Jan transfer window and loaning Haaland back for the rest of the season - I know lots of people are calling for various types of CM as well, but with Fred looking much stronger this season and McT growing up fast as well, maybe Ole will leave that till the summer.

Would Sancho and Haaland be enough to lift the team and make people happy?
 
A) It's not happening.
B) If it does happen, and we loan Haaland back, we'll just be getting Sancho for this season.. and no .. that won't be what we need. Matic is done here.. We need a midfielder.
 
If we are signing a midfielder this January it has to be a number 10. If Pogba gets injured long term again we might as well throw the season away. We are hopeless against parked defenses. In dm for a few matches you could get away with Jones as a dm or Tuanzebe. As we have seen over the past 2 months you can't get away with our set of 10's our Achilles heel this season. Even without Pogba we would be close or in the top 4 if we had a proper 10

They make the occasional break, but it's not plenty within a game. The pair of them maintain an even distance throughout the game. They don't act as box to box.

Jesus Christ - he's played well ONCE!!!!!!!! ONCE!!!!!

This is why we are where we are as a club and fanbase - one good performance from a player and suddenly they're 'looking stronger'. Jesus Christ, honestly - I give up. We deserve a team full of Fred's - 7/10 games below par/terrible; 2 half decent showings; 1 very good performance. Sign 'em up.

Calm down there!

He has definitely looked more settled this season and not just the Brighton game, 'looking stronger' is hardly claiming he's world class. Oh and by the way, I'm not part of your fan base, but if you want to deride your fellow fans and others for showing a bit of reserved positivity it's your choice.

Phillips is a top DMC. He could replace Matic in January. Phillips will put in more tackles, interceptions, clearances. Phillips makes about the same number of passes with about the same pass success rate as Matic. He wins as many headers and fires more long balls, with way more forward passes. If we sell Matic for £10 and buy Phillips for £35, that's a net outlay of £25m and a bargain (for United)

Ivan Rakitic is more of a b2b. He's had a bid of £15m made for him, rejected by Barca. They paid about that (€16m) 5 years ago. Would you really bring in a player, aged 31, who's never played in the PL?
I've got to say no to this. I'd rather United bought one of:
  • Giorgian de Arrascaeta: 11 goals + 10 assists in only 1509 minutes of football for Flamengo. Italian passport. Tackles as well as any b2b. We can surely get him for between £25m and £30m
  • Matheus Pereira: 3 goals + 6 assists in 1014 minutes in the Championship for WBA. On loan for Sporting, who want just over £8m for him.
  • Eberechi Eze: 6 goals + 4 assists in 1298 minutes in the Championship for QPR.
  • Or even the muppets' favorite: Bruno Fernandes

I get blinded by frustrated rage when I see United fans lauding a player for a 1/10 very good performance sorry, I didn't register you were a Brighton fan!

I prefer to see Fred's performance as the outlier amid a sea of below-average performances, not a sign of things to come.

Yeah, they are operating fairly deep as neither are great positionally, but I think McTominay has displayed attributes better suited to a box to box role when given the chance.

Greenwood & Tuanzebe are practically guaranteed minutes every week for United if both fit, absolutely ridiculous to suggest they should go anywhere.
 
The way things are going now , and as Neville said it, Solskjær needs 1-2 major signings in January to keep the faith and momentum high both inside and outside the team.

Cannot stress how important that is. If not i think rest of the season will be in even more shambles than it is now.

Yeah can see it being an even more rollercoaster second half of the season if we don't do anything at all in January, particularly if we suffer injuries to key players in the same way we have in the first half of the season. That will definitely lead to even more anger towards the board and frustration with Ole from the fans.

Find it odd you've dismissed Rakitic and doucoure so easily, while heavily praising 3 championship players.

Rakitic is proven elite level quality and is far better than anything we currently have.

Doucoure on his day is very good and proven in the premier league.

Both seem better options than Phillips, Periera and Eze.

I agree that the three look good players and you could argue a case for them, and they may well suit the transfer strategy we are going for, but to favour them over someone of Rakitics quality in particular could be misguided thinking.

I;'d be happy if we signed Phillips for example, he does look good from what I've seen, but Rakitic is pure class

Unfortunately Phillips is Leeds fans. The guy even called us "scum" (video was out there), can't see him joining us. Need a world class manager to even convince him to join us.
