Recently started listening to rock, alt rock music again. What made me go back to it was 'If this is it' by newton Faulkner.

When I checked my old collection, I found one from 2004, which has the likes of Matchbox Twenty, Staind, John Mayor in it.

Felt good. :)

The best thing about the artists you've mentioned is that you'll find there are bands and artists out there in the world of rock vastly superior!

If you like John Mayor, try Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix.

If you like Matchbox Twenty, try Blink 182 and co.

If you like Staind, well err. They did a decent cover of careless whisper once.

Try Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, REM, etc. etc.

Rock is brilliant!

Staind is terrific. Their song 'outside' was something I enjoyed listening to, again and again.

Creed was one of my favourite band too.

Try a band called Crossfade Girish. I reckon they'll be right up your street.

Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins
Guns N Roses
Aerosmith
Metallica
Alice In Chains
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Van Halen
Megadeth
Led Zeppelin

As a former punk-rock kid, how on earth do you go from Matchbox Twenty to Blink 182?!

To the OP: What kind of rock are you into? I'd recommend some Swedish garage rock in the veins of The Hives and Mando Diao. It's quite catchy and easy to like, and what drew me towards the genre quite a few years back.

If you're feeling really adventurous I'd recommend one of my personal all time favourites called Manchester Orchestra. They're an American indie rock act with a sound that's reminiscent of the 90's grunge sound. At least the more up-tempo stuff on their second album, Mean Everything To Nothing. I could give tons of suggestions from the US indie / alt rock scene, but I guess it's a bit of an acquired taste, at least the more experimental stuff.

One suggestion I would like to throw out there is The Gaslight Anthem, I think they'll have a wide appeal with their straight forward rock sound.

If you're looking for more classic stuff I don't think Black Sabbath and Dio has been mentioned already.

Yeah I like all sorts of Rock music bar metal. If I wanted to listen to screaming, I would go piss off my mother.

You're either rediscovering rock music or discovering rock music again, not rediscovering rock music again :p

Goo Goo Dolls would fit in nicely in that list.

If you like Creed then you should probably listen to Alterbridge too if you haven't already.

As for discovering Rock music, you should start listening to the 60s, 70s and 80s music. Atleast that's where I'm at now since getting into the classics. that way you will probably move into different genres of rock.

We probably wouldn't get along.

Ew, Daughtry. That's not even rock music.

Well I've basically gone the other way. Been in love with rock n roll since I was about 15/16 but now I've begun to lose interest in commercial music and grown more and more interesting in folk rock or whatever you call that brand of music.

Really liked their songs like You don't belong, No surprise. I think pretty much the whole album is good. Songs are a bit repetitive, yes.

More suggestions are welcome.

Are you interested in more classic rock, 90's and alternative or stuff thats more contemporary -

Random pick of newer artists from shuffling my ipod -

1. The National
2. Fleet Foxes
3. The Shins
4. Surfjan Stevens
5. Mumford and Sons
6. The Flaming Lips
7. Band of Horses
8. Arcade Fire

You should probably give them a youtube and see if you like this kind of stuff. They're all rather good.

Listen to this person Girish. That's eight fecking rock solid contemporary acts right there. Music did not end in 1999.

None of which fit directly into the rock or classic rock genre. Band Of Horses perhaps the exception.

Girish - if it's classic rock that you are interested in, I'll try sending you a link that I once reported to the internet police for the top 500 classic rock songs of all time. Very good list that with some definitive classics, great for anyone who isn't that familiar with the genre to expand musical horizons.

I'd agree. That brings up that holy nasty discussion of labelling genres which never gets anywhere. I guess they could all be classified as indie rock. Well, lets not go there. :)

Pearl Jam - Ten (Greatest album ever in my opinion)

Stone Sour - Come whatever May

System of a Down - Toxicity

30 seconds to Mars - This is War

You will enjoy these.

I really not dig classic rock. :(

edit: artists I found interesting so far: Hinder, Lifehouse, Crossfade, 30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Doors Down, Shinedown etc.

What artists are you considering classic rock, Girish?

My advice, listen to Fleet Foxes. If you don't like that go for Mumford & Sons. Don't think the latter is a patch on the former but you might like their more commercial style.
