I've never had to buy a decent TV before but now i need one for my new house. My knowledge of TVs is as follows:

  • I've been told i must get at least 1080 resolution.

That's is.

I'm leaning more towards Sony purely because i associate them with top quality but in reality it means nothing to me.

This is the TV i've been looking at:

Currys - Shop for Flat Panel TV - Sony KDL40V581 40" 1080p LCD TV

But then found it much cheaper at:

Sony BRAVIA KDL-40V5810U (KDL40V5810U) 40" freesat LCD TV- Freeview,Full HD 1080p,100Hz,DLNA-Finance available

Which is a lot cheaper and is, quite fortunately, located in Bolton so i can pick it up. That is the same TV isn't it? I'm not being a retard am I?

Also, is that a good TV then? Or can i get much better for much cheaper if i go with one of the lesser known names?

3 things that are important are: It must be Full HD i.e 1920x1080, Refresh rate must be atleast 100Hz and finally the response time should be less than 5 Milliseconds.. If you find a TV that has all these then your good to go..

But am i likely to find a TV that has all that for less than £800?

looks OK ,when I want something I type in the model and read some reviews on it , has stopped me buying some shit.
Always best to do your homework first and ask questions and look after all spending nearly a grand on a TV you want a cracking one.

Yeh just doing that now. Currys are actually charging a grand for the same TV. Cheeky feckers.

Cheers I did not know that.
The Sony one looks good value then.

Neither did i. But then when watching Champions League on ITV i kept hearing them say it was available to Freesat viewers in HD so i finally looked it up :)

OH yes ,but there is never much on it.
You need SKY HD with the new programe guide , but if you have them use this and bobs your uncle.

ITV HD on Sky HD

Ooooh yeh my mate did that (i have Virgin) and he said it worked but you had to go through the whole thing every time you wanted to get ITV HD. It didnt save or summat.

Given what's going on with 3d i wonder if it's worth getting a fairly cheap HD TV now seeing as 3d will be taking over :wenger:

Forget 3D.

Do you want to watch the TV on it, nothing more? TV is recorded in Europe at 30fps and film at 24fps, so that millisecond and refresh rate bollocks, is well, just that. No TV company currently broadcast in FULL-HD, so unless you are planning to use Blu-ray, 720p will be fine.

As always, the most important question is - what do you want to do with this TV?

He want's hook his Xbox up to it. In this case, what would your advice to him be, Weaste?

I watch the usual crap with the mrs but mainly i'm most interested in watching sport on it.

My 360 will be hooked up to it from time to time but i mainly use a pretty bog standard TV for that.

feck me i fee llike i've just been grilled!

Bump it up to 42. Do Sony make 42s? Maybe not! Do not waste your money on 1080p unless it's at least 42, preferably 46. Depends how far away you are from it.

As mentioned in the OP i don't know much about the subject but i was told to get a 1080 tv because even though there's nothing shot in it yet it will save me replacing the TV in the near future.

42" is just that little bit too big for my living room to be honest Weaste. I'd feel like i was right on top of it.

Do you have any 1080p content to put on it? Are you planning on providing this TV with 1080p content? If not, why the hell do you want a 1080p TV?

Erm.... I'm providing it with HD. I don't know if that answers any questions!

PS3 down the road?

I don't have one yet. I'll prob get one in the next year or so though, but having said that the console won't be on the main TV anyway.

Sony is overpriced...get samsung or philips.

I chose Sony purely because i associate them with top quality. Are Samsung and Philips TVs as good or better?

A 60 frame per second game (such as COD4, MW2) updates the screen every 16ms, no? What is the controller lag on the XB360?

Yes to your first question and i don't know to your second. I was under the impression controller lag varied depending on what display you were playing on. I know MLG use 22" viewsonic displays as these apparently have no lag.

Why though? I'm not being a smart arse btw, it's a genuine question because i don't know.

I presumed it was a good deal because the exact same TV is £250 more at Currys.

Currys - Shop for Flat Panel TV - SONY 40W5810 40" 1080p LCD TV

Don't get me wrong, thats a good price on digital direct - as you say £250 less than from currys.

Its just i think for £750 you could get a better set. I haven't looked extensively at TV prices for a couple of months, but im sure you can get better specs for a similar price. I could be wrong, and the Sony displays are known for being very good quality.

Also. What's the difference between Plasma, LCD and LED TVs?
