Illan Meslier | Long term target?

He's okay at the sweeping side of the game but Meslier's fundamentally still not a good enough shot stopper to be a viable option at the highest level. Our build up might be better but we'd still concede more goals.

He is not good enough, and the goal he conceded versus Everton yesterday will hopefully put an end to this rumour.

Talented, hasn't been a starting PL keeper since he was 20 for nothing, but still looks far too raw.

At still just 22 years old bigger clubs can definitely afford to see how he develops over another few years. But maybe if Leeds get relegated and he's available for cheap someone will take the chance on him. You'd need to be very confident he's going to keep improving though.

At only 22 and starting for a prem side he could go on to become a good keeper, however those who think he or a range of young pretenders are just gonna stroll in and take DDGs spot seemlessly are in for a surprise. With the spotlight on I guarantee a lot of those potential replacements won't look nearly as secure as DDG has looked for most of his time here.

Not being brilliant at distribution out of defence is a fault that can be overcome with system work arounds(which they mostly have been this season), not being able to stand tall when the spotlight is on as it has been for most of DDGs time here is another matter.

Oh and here's the type of goal (on 1:20) which if DDG let in you'd definately hear about it.

I think he’ll be world class. Crazy statement to make but he has all the right fundamentals and is currently in a pressure cooker situation if you think about how his football club plays football.

The right coaching he can go far.

Clearly not good enough. No presence and looks like another wimp.
Makes some absolute howlers as well.

Barca did pretty alright with Valdes.

He's got potential but it seems like everytime someone has a shot at him it goes in.

Haha yes. But they also had probably one of the greatest midfield trios ever in football (Xavi, Iniesta and Biscuits). Oh and also probably the greatest player of all time aside from that.

Meslier has the potential. I feel we might be after him if Leeds get relegated and we can get a good deal. He could be back up to De Gea initially and then take over in a year or two.

Not sure he will settle for that.

He basically reminds me of de gea when we first bought him. The only thing I think he lacks is the distribution side, which I thought would be what we'd be more focussed on.

Meslier is rubbish, why do people want him?!
I really don’t get it either. He always seems to let in cheap goals against us, that may be why I rate him so low

I have a preference for very tall vocal and domineering keepers.

I wouldn't say he's world class but I do think he's got the potential to be.

Keepers need to judged slightly differently when establishing themselves as they tend to peak much later. Many keepers tend to get experience in the lower leagues before breaking through. That's been the case with guys like Pickford, Ramsdale and Henderson. Meslier has been thrown into the deep end from a young age and despite making some errors along the way, he's managed to keep retain his spot in Leeds' team.

Whilst Meslier is still raw in some regards, the potential is there for him to be a well-rounded keeper. People questioning why United would be in for him are overlooking attributes he has that he would immediately bring to the first team. For starters, he's much better at commanding his box and catching the ball compared to De Gea who time and time again loves to punch the ball. Combine that with the fact Meslier is much more comfortable on the ball and you can see how signing him would improve our team and ability to hold onto the ball. Shot-Stopping wise, yes he's a downgrade on De Gea but in the long-run not only can this be improved but also I think overall the benefits Meslier brings would be a net positive for the team all round.

Is he any good? Or has the potential to be? I can’t say that I’ve watched him outside our matches against Leeds which isn’t a huge sample size

Reminds of De Gea. Seems meek.

Worst starting keeper in the league surely? Either him or Danny Ward.

If he was genuinely our long term target... :nervous:

He’s very poor. Bazunu and him seem to be highly rated but have been terrible this season

Never saw why this guy was ever really rated. Always sent shivers down my spine thinking about him as our post- De Gea keeper.

I really hope our scouts have moved on to other targets who are more than just above average with their feet and actually command their box.

What kind of lunatic would want this GK anywhere near this club

He’s never been good. easily the worst keeper in the league. I’d even say there’s better in the championship than him.
