If Rooney played up front for Barca/Real/Bayern..

Madrid and Barca don't hand loads of chances on plates to forwards. They do a lot of one touch stuff and players beating a man in the final third to open gaps for a final run.

Even Bale sometimes looks like the odd one out in the formation dance lineup, half a step behind the others in the build-up. He redeems himself (mostly) with speed on the break and bravado in shooting - he got 17 goals (all competitions) last year, 22 the year before - I can't imagine Rooney getting anything close.

Would he stifle their attack to the extent where they become slightly enhanced versions of us but still seriously struggle to penetrate the defences of the opposition or would he thrive on the superior support and return to form?

In other words, is a striker really that important in the functioning of the entire attack or can he in effect be carried, as long as the support around him is absolute quality.

Discuss.
He wouldnt get the chance to. 2 bad performances of the sort he is giving us and he wouldnt make theit benches. On top of bring subbed off at half time upon each bad outing

That is the main difference between Rooney this season and Rooney in previous seasons. In last season or a season before he didn't played at his highest level but he still scored and assisted a lot, this season he apart from 3 goals against Brugge didn't scored or assisted a lot.
He was always a good finisher in front of the goal but this season he is missing the chances he get.

His decline is on fast forward this season.

The chances he has missed has been made more apparent because he's only getting like one a game, if that. The miss against Spurs, Wolfsburg and Everton are the only I can think of.

In a team like United, our striker should be getting more chances. We've only created 81 chances all season in the EPL, which is only better than Villa. Thats awful. Even when Martial plays uptop he's starved of chances. Most of the goals he's scored is from individual brilliance.

In a team like this United, a centre forward should help create chances also. Not necessarily assists, just beeing a techniacally reliable link in players linking up would help a lot.

He'd still put up decent numbers in those teams by getting more space and onto the end of things - due to their sheer dominance over others, and the chances created.

But he will hinder their overall approach play.

That's definetely true but most top clubs expect their striker to create goals and opportunities through individual brilliance. A top forward will make decent opportunities out of half chances.

I imagine Rooney is of this mindset, putting the blame on others for not creating obvious chances for him.

Are we really going to creep into accepting a striker who needs 10 opportunities to put one away? Especially given LvGs style it just won't be effective.

Like @Dr. Funkenstein said he should help creating chances also like Martial did against Arsenal when he created a chance for himself out of nothing or against Liverpool when he got a ball on the wing and still created a chance and scored a goal.

Also he should scored against Newcastle with all his chances. I am not big critic of Rooney, tbf i defended him quite a lot, but I have to admit that he declined and converting chances and creating space for himself are areas where he declined the most. His first touch was never consistent especially when he was out of form and his short passes were always hit amd miss (two things that he is criticized the most) but his biggest strengths were always his workrate, that he always convert big chances and that he often score a goal or make an assist out of nothing but this season his finishing is off, he don't create anything and his workrate is not good as it used to be.

If Rooney played up front for Barca,Real or Bayern, he'd be hooked at half time never to be trusted to start another game relegated to the bench and sold at the earliest opportunity.

I'd have him at Charlton, though.

2010 was 5, almost 6 years ago.

You could apply everything in your statement to Drogba but there's a reason he isn't playing top level anymore.

Drogba has been a terror in the MLS. I think he'd do okay for the Big 3, too. Like Rooney, not good enough to start there, but if he did, still good enough in the box to get 12-15 in 35 starts or something semi-respectable.
