ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Should that be the case?

There's an argument I guess, you'd have to run through a checklist (I think it was pitching in-line, I think he didn't hit it, I think it was too high etc.) and then the umpires calls would all be for/against what he thought in each section. Would add a bit more time to things - but not too much?

What a shit ending. Wtf was that line by Nawaz. So dumb.

Are you sure you want India to play NZ in the semis given the track record?
Yes, it was nice to get the monkey off the back, but NZ don't scare me, it's a great team but definitely beatable if you don't give them early wickets and play santner well and their batting is good but not great.

Their recent wins against us are based on green tracks with lot of help for pace not going to happen in eden gardens.

What was the thinking behind giving over to Nawaz? If anything usuma was a better choice.

Usama would just have bowled a first ball full toss and it would have been a loss either way, it was really between a devil and deep sea, which begs the question why are pak spinners so rubbish.

Umpire’s call is the biggest load of crap. If the ball is hitting the stumps it’s out. If it’s not it’s not. If you trust the hawk eye then trust it completely. If you trust the technology then get rid of this umpire’s call bullshit.

Can’t disagree with that. Two shit choices but this was more shittier.

Nah, if the tech isn't 100% (and it can't possibly be because of all the factos that affect ball movement) then you have to have some sort of mechanism to account for that.

The good news - great game.

The bad news - semi finalists nearly done.

Except the technology itself doesn't trust itself, umpire's call isn't some subjective crap icc came up with to help umpires, its there because the tech isn't full proof, it can't definitively say in certain situations whether the ball will hit the stumps or not, so quite correctly they are letting the 50-50's be decided by umpires than technology.

But the umpires aren't 100% either, in fact they're far from that. Should just be a question of whether tech is right more often than umpires.
how do you know whether tech is right though? it doesn't know and is guessing, so if it is just guessing logically a human trained for that specific job should be doing it rather than a machine.

Humans are also guessing. The question is simply who is better at it. I would think they could do tests on umpires and technology side by side, having a machine bowl deliveries that they've analyzed the likely trajectories for, and then see who is better at guessing given an LBW like obstacle.

Doesn't work outside labs, imperfect tech comes with biases that as time goes on people will learn and exploit, people are less predictable, umpire's call keeps the uncertainty in the game alive.

I like DRS personally. I don't think it's particularly contraversial in general?

I'm not sure it's comparable personally but for the record I think VAR is the worst thing to ever happen to football.

Babar should be sacked as captain for the rest of the tournament just got giving Nawaz that final over Usama.

There can't be any logic behind it. You have one wicket left to take with two tailenders. On the one hand you have a leg spinner who can ball the googly, already taken two wickets and bowled 8 overs. On the other hand you have an orthodox left armer who hasn't taken any wickets, is more renowned for restricting runs than taking wickets and hadn't bowled since the 20th over.

Just. Brainless.

Biases that people learn about can also be corrected for. It's not like technology can't evolve.

I believe it's going to get to the point where eventually it will take over from umpires for most decisions, but when is likely going to be decided by popular perception than the data, sadly.

But your combining the umpires judgement with the tech. So they can balance each other out.

Remember you also get Umpire's Calls that go for teams.

I'm not sure it's much of a combination, that's the thing. It's most just one guess superseding another. If the umpires explained why they thought something was/wasn't out, and then got feedback from the tech to change aspects of that decision, it might work.

Anyway, it's not a big problem at the moment. Today perhaps you can argue the Rassie call more than balances out the call at the end.

Pak would be gutted but it was coming for them. They have been poor this tournament and Babar's captaincy has been atrocious.

SA made a mess of the chase for no reason. Only if Markram tried to score a "selfish" century sa would have been home without this stress.

Either way a great game but now all other games become meaningless.

Awesome, enjoy!

Enjoy mate. Hopefully you'll see a PAK victory.

Glad @zing got to witness a close game.

Thanks! Great game - maybe the best one I've been to.

Very bipartisan crowd. Both sides had huge support from 90% of the crowd. For the last 20% of the game, enormous support for Pakistan as they were the underdogs, chanting Babar and Afridi's names. A lot of places in India wouldn't have approved of the level of support Pakistan got today - but always the case with Chepauk.

I was conflicted who to root for. I wanted Pakistan to win to keep the tournament alive, but they really didn't deserve it. SA look a very good side. Disciplined batting but attacking. Markram brilliant.

Where on earth is Fakhar? Man do they miss him and Naseem. If Australia lose tomorrow, those on 4 are still in it.

First he was in poor form and dropped, but he's also injured right now and can't play. Might have played for Imam if fit, given Imam is also in poor form.

Fakhar fielded as a sub today, I think?

It’s depressing. We’ve had a world class spin option almost continuously going from Abdul Qadir, Mushie, Saqlain, Afridi, Ajmal. Then backed up by players like Malik, Hafeez. I still think Shadab can be that option for us but he’s a bit all over the place at the moment.
Big issue is the lack of depth in Pakistan's batting isn't it. Get Babar and RZA and there isn't much left really. It's a shame because they've got a good bowling lineup (although not as strong as it would be if Naseem was in it).
We do lack some experience - Shafique and Saud have played single digits ODIs to date I believe.

It’s a shame Naseem is missing because there’s a big drop off in quality between him and the likes of Wasim Jnr and Hassan Ali. Haris Rauf has been pretty abject too.

I hope these 4 losses in the bounce lead to some changes. Firstly I’d like to see Rizwan given the captaincy and open the batting and then a few personnel changes…

Shafique
Rizwan
Babar
Saud
[Salman Agha]
Iftikhar
Shadab
[Nawaz]
Shaheen
Naseem
Haris

could be a good match this.. good idea to have it as a day match given the timezone in Aus/NZ

Jesus, Australia have completely destroyed them.

DRS - why do we default to the umpires call? The umpire must have greater average error than the algorithm. My guess is we default to it because otherwise we’d have lots more wickets and icc doesn’t want to confront that issue.

Absolute dogshit by Warner after a brilliant 50. He's playing for a run-a-ball century

Hard to criticize a team when they are having that start, but they should really be having a go at Ravindra in the next over.

Warners switched into playing for his century mode. Kinda sucked the whole momentum out of his own and the Aussie innings here.

Just realised Travis Head doesn't have an IPL team. Next IPL auction is in December..
