I agree with a lot of your posts in this thread but I think the disappearance of the Barmy Army has also to do with the terrible state of the English ODI teams through the years. Funny that you mention '92, as that was the last time England won a knock-out game in the World cup. That was 6 world cups and 24 years ago.
As for the general point, I mentioned somewhere earlier in the thread that we'll see evolution of cricket into various IPL style T20 leagues. With Australia, England and India being the Big 3, like football in Europe with Spain, England and Germany, and the rest being smaller leagues. Actually, it is not a bad thing of the associates either. T20 cricket requires much less skill and perserverance. Planting your foot and htting through the line on flat belters with bowlers reduced to bowling machines on smallish grounds might help expand the game.
I won't like it, may be you won't either but commerce will prevail.
