ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Its not the kind of nerves I had for the semi-final. I could barely think about anything else the previous day and woke up at 3 in the morning though the game was starting at 5.

There's nerves definitely though. I was pretty young in '83 though I do vaguely remember the celebrations. Its eight years since we've been in a world cup final.

I wish I was back in Bombay. I was planning to travel down during the tournament but the wife nixed it.
I'm really scared about tomorrow. I couldnt take another world cup final defeat :(

I fear their top order. Still feel if we bowl well its a shakey batting line up. But...

On the other hand, their 3 and 4 tend to bat like it's a test match when the pressure's on.The crowd will play a part I feel.If their nervous it'll transmit down to our players

Thats true. Dilshan's the key to winning the game. Get him early and you're looking at 260-270. The others, Sanga and Mahela in particular, bat well but don't do it quick enough.

Sehwag's important for us as well but we've got plenty of guys who can explode.

I'm not too worried abuot the bowling. They're good but they're too much of a know quantity. We've faced each other so much in the recent past that there's no real surprises.

Yeah same for me. For the SF, I was shitting it for like 2-3 days, but for the final, I'm completely relaxed. So far.

Same here.

I was a lot more worried for the QF and the SF.. bigger games, IMO.

We've played Sri Lanka 30 times since July 2008 according to Cricinfo.. insane.

edit:

by bigger, I mean, against more high-profile opposition.. we were more likely to lose in those.

I think we're more likely to lose tomorrow but the opposition we've faced were more high profile. Sri Lanka are a better team right now and in these conditions than either Australia and Pakistan. But there is that fear of Australia because they are Australia and Pakistan because it's awful to lose to them. But in cricketing terms, Sri Lanka are a better team.

So yeah, I'm fecking hating this feeling.

It is wierd to be starting as favourites ina world cup final. India have never been in that position. You also have to worry that two such emotionally draining matches will cause a hangover in the final.

On the whole though, you'd back India to edge it. They're battle hardened and have been fully tested. The team is clicking as a whole and there's more magic in that batting line-up than Sri-Lanka have.

India will win the cricket world cup tweeps! #tendulkar is too good, slaps the ball all over the place !! I'd love to be there it looks nuts

Rio knows his stuff

I a giddy as feck now... gonna watch it in a pub with friends... I will probably be too drunk by the end...

But technically Sri Lanka are stronger than the other two. At least they have played like that this tournament. Their batting is in solid form and their bowling seems to clicking well too. So they are the strongest opposition so far.

Not really, had Pakistan made it to the final we would have trounced them (AGAIN). Ergo, India should at least beat them if not trounce them.

You generally do well against lanka. Doesn't stop them from being much better than your lot. Sometimes teams inexplicably have a good record against another.

There is a rumor that Sreeshanth might get the nod. I really hope not. He is certainly not a big game player. He tends to be erratic. But the problem we face going into the match with only two seamers is that if one of them has an off day, we will be totally reliant on the spinners. So it is a tough situation for Dhoni.

Cricket World Cup: Muralitharan set to defy injury

ICC Cricket World Cup final: India v Sri Lanka

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Date: Saturday, 2 April Start: 1000 BST

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is set to put his body on the line in a bid to end his career with victory over India in Saturday's World Cup final.

The 38-year-old is expected to take the field in the Mumbai showpiece despite struggling with hamstring, knee and groin problems during the tournament.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews is out with a thigh injury, while India seamer Ashish Nehra is a major doubt.

India batsman Sachin Tendulkar is eyeing his 100th international century.

And while the majority of the 38,000 crowd at the Wankhede Stadium will be cheering on their prodigal son, Sri Lanka fans will be pinning their hopes on Muralitharan, who as a 23-year-old helped the small island nation stun the cricket world by beating Australia in the 1996 final in Lahore.

Muralitharan, who claimed a wicket with his last international delivery on home soil in the semi-final victory over New Zealand in Colombo, needs three more to equal former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath's World Cup record of 71 wickets.

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara stopped short of guaranteeing Muralitharan would play, but stressed the off-spinner's importance to the side.

"He's a big-match player, he has been amazing for us," said Sangakkara.

"It's great to have him in the side and it would be great to hopefully have him on the field tomorrow and to have him play this World Cup final with us because there is no other way we can have it.

"Whatever happens we want to play for him, and play for each other and do the best that we can do."

Mathews, 23, has been ruled out with a right thigh injury suffered while fielding during Tuesday's semi-final.

Batting with a runner, he helped Sri Lanka clinch a five-wicket victory with an aggressive 14 not out.

He has been replaced in the squad by Suraj Randiv, who has 22 wickets in 21 one-day internationals and could provide spin-bowling cover for Muralitharan.

But Mathews' absence leaves paceman Lasith Malinga as the only seam bowler remaining from the semi-final - so back-up seamers Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando will be in contention, although without Mathews to bat at number seven, the length of the Sri Lankan tail will be a concern.

Meanwhile, left-armer Nehra is almost certain to miss the final after injuring the middle finger of his right hand in the semi-final win over Pakistan.

India captain Mahendra Dhoni said no decision had been made whether Nehra would be replaced in the team by an additional seamer in Sreesanth or a second spinner in Ravichandran Ashwin.

"The Mumbai wicket usually has a bit of bounce and a third seamer gives me the option to manoeuvre the attack," he said.

"But if we feel there could be turn in the wicket as the game progresses, Ashwin will come into the picture. It helps to have such good options."

Dhoni said left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir was fit to play after recovering from a minor hamstring strain he developed while fielding against Pakistan.

In the first all-Asian final, all eyes will be on Tendulkar in his home city.

The 37-year-old is playing in his sixth World Cup, and will be desperate to help his team land the trophy it has only captured on one occasion, in 1983.

The "Little Master" scored two hundreds in the group stage and looked on course to reach the 100 century landmark in the semi-final before he was dismissed for 85 following an uncharacteristically scratchy knock in which he was dropped four times.

"Going back to Mumbai, especially for this event, is a wonderful occasion," said Tendulkar. "All I want to say is, we want to be calm, focus on our job and get the job done."

In the build-up to the final, Dhoni paid tribute to Tendulkar, who made his India debut as a 16-year-old in 1989.

"God has made Sachin to play cricket," said Dhoni. "He has been doing it for 21 years and a few more years to come."

With India the marginal favourites to win the trophy, Sangakkara is hoping the weight of expectation could tell on their players.

"Everyone in the world expects India to turn up tomorrow and win this game," he said.

"We have to understand the fact that India for the last year or two years have been tagged as the favourites by almost everyone to win the World Cup.

"I'm sure they'll be looking at themselves as favourites too."

Australian Simon Taufel will be umpiring his first World Cup final Dhoni is playing down the pressure on his team.

"We are not thinking about tomorrow's game as a final, for us every match is a challenge and just as important," he said.

"These matches are called by different names like quarters, semis and final. In the end you have to play the same way and do the right things to succeed.

"Of course we realise this is a World Cup final. It can't get bigger than this, but our preparations have to be the same."

Saturday's match will be umpired by Australia's Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar of Pakistan.

Taufel has been named international umpire of the year five times the presence of Australia in the last three World Cup finals has prevented him from officiating in the sport's biggest single match.

A massive security operation has been mounted for the highest-profile sporting event to take place in Mumbai since gunmen attacked the city in November 2008, leaving 174 people dead.

"We will be overdoing it a bit," said Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik. "But it's better to be on the safe side. The stakes are high."

Apparently Duncan Fletcher seems to be the forerunner to replace Kirsten as coach of the Indian cricket team. Im not exactly sure about that choice.

Duncan Fletcher comes across as a depressing chap.

Apparently the pitch is going to turn a lot. Toss very important then?

Does having coached a team turn you into a person of that teams nationality?

Tom Moody seems to have forgotten that he ever was an Australian. Everything he spouts out seems to be from a Sri Lankan perspective. Get a grip man.

Quite a few people are suggesting Ashwin over Sreeshanth which quite frankly is the right thing to do.

Afternoon to you too, Sultan.

Can't wait.

If we win, I hope we win in a good game.

Impossible to say without knowing what the pitch is like. But the problem is, Sreesanth's always a gamble. He might bowl you magic balls, but it's entirely possible he could get carted around for 90 runs in his 10. And he doesn't do a lot with the older ball, if anything. I'm not sure we can afford to carry two bowlers like that in Munaf and Sreesanth.

Good Morning all.

Was thinking about this game all night .... have not looked forward to a game of sport like since May 26th 1999!!! Though I desperately want India to win, Tendulkar 100 and all, I have a feeling Sri Lanka will prove too strong.

SL just won the toss, which is a big deal at the Wanakade .... If SL can post 280+, then India genuinely will 'have to win this game for themselves' as the nightime chase is very difficult. Wanakade takes better to spin as the game goes on ...

A request: As we are all going to be together for next 7 - 8 hours, PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY INFORMATION OR SCORE RE WEST HAM vs MAN UNITED ANYWHERE IN THIS THREAD. Like most, Im recording the game and will watch straight after. Mods, please look out for this?

Morning / Afternoon

Jai Hind

Jai Hind!

fecking hell, four changes for Lanka!

Good move to bring Kulasekara, I think. He can really trouble Sehwag.

How do you stand a foot away from the guy and not hear what he called? On the world cup final..

Oh well. Going to be a cracking chase whatever they put up, but they have to be favourites. They can defend any reasonable score. Great bowling.

We all know what the news channels are going to be doing if we lose the game.. Play that toss over and over and call in lip reading experts from all over the country.

I agree with Sammsky.

Also that was so weird with the toss. WTF?
