How many defenders do you think Sir Alex will sign this summer?

IMO, I think it will only be for one centre-half.

Even though I would love it if he signed a right-back as well.

I dont believe we need any new chaps in any other department except Defence - so i reckon hell get 2 defenders!!

We need three. Two CB and one RB.

But this world is not always perfect, so I will settle for it if we get one CB and one RB. :)

i can see two coming in,
Iriwn is out and Blanc + Johnsen are to be phased out,

one centre back and a versatile full back would wouldnt be too much

Personally I'd like a couple of full backs and a couple of centre backs and a young un or two for the future.

;)

Well, even if we get 4 great defenders who never played with each other before, they still can't be worse than our current defence. ;)

An Irishman who can count. Kinell!

;)

To a club like United our defence is embarrassing
despite isolated good performances, at the very highest level we cannot compete at the back.....I hope the boss can get a good Coach & the courage to clear the whole lot out

You need a R or L B and a CB. Silvestre would play CB, his favorite position.

So : Mexès and Boumsong would be good choices.
Bréchet too.

We should buy Boumsong on account of his quality name alone.

Jean-Alain Boumsong, 22 years old, he always played in Auxerre, Europe U18 champion with France, he now plays in France U21, and he can play CB and RB.

Philippe Mexès, 20 years old, just the same career than Boumsong, he is CB, I think you would call that a sweeper (like Blanc... but younger!).

Jérémie Bréchet, 22 years old, he always played in Lyon where he won a Coupe de la Ligue, plays in France U21, and had one cap for France in Confederations cup (won by France). He is LB.

I reckon if SAF did'nt have some sense of loyalty to Gaza, Phiza and prob Brown to. He would scrap the current defense and start from scratch. I reckon we will buy 3 defenders, Hofland, Bridge, & another, Silvestre will probably gets his knickers in a twist and ask for a transfer. He has some excellent qualities but he is'nt really a true team player and will not take to kindly to being benched, and hes not the most defensive of defenders so i have a inkling he may go to. Contreversial thoughts but there you have em

I was hoping that the new manager would come in and take these ruthless decisions, but alas that is not to be. Thats not to say that Alex can't be ruthless when he wants to be. But if you get rid of one Neville then you need to get rid of the other, and neither of them would want to leave. So we've got to replace them as first teamers and use them as backup.
Possible first team defence/Backup:
Bridge/Silvestre
Ayala/Brown
Mexes/O'Shea
Contra/Gary

I'd be interested to know other people's recommendations for full back roles.

Ideal scenario:

Mexes
Tudor
Contra

Blanc stays another year to mentor Mexes. Contra would be fantastic at RB and can also fill in for Becks if necessary.

gimme emerton over contra any day ...

emerton would add so much to the team and itd also make us even more unpredictable in midfield cos we could play beckham in the center sometimes

players i´d like to have on board

hofland
tudor
emerton
mexes
bridge

i dont think mexes is ready yet ... sign him in summer and loan him back to auxerre for a season

tudor and hofland would be a superb pairing at cb ... theyd also add some much needed steel and toughness to the team

Thought so. If he's good, why does he play for Feyernoord? Handy him being a United fan. Is he better than Contra, who should be available in the summer if reports are correct.

I can't think of any better players than Contra for that role. He's excellent going forward and would provide a good attacking presence on the right, similar to what Silvestre is capable on the left. The advantage with Emerton is that he is still young and of course speaks the language. Either would be good investments.

why did ruud play for psv? ;)

hes only 23 and hasnt been there for more than 2 years or so ..

give the lad a chance or did you expect him to join a big european club straight from australia?

quite a couple of oversea players have benefitted from playing in holland ...

Yeah but Bobby Carlos isn't in his prime anymore. Contra hasn't played his best football yet imo.

my point is that i think carlos was and still is a horrible defender ... defending isnt really one of contra´s strengths, either

He's an decent enough defender imo. Not great, not bad. His attacking skills is what I'm interested in more. We can get away with not having Thuram or Maldini if we can tighten things up in the central defence.

I know that much of what we are all writing is a wish list.

However is it possible that Fergie will remain a little too loyal to some players?

I think for example Hofland will come, but with Wes Brown back and OShea and G Neville . .. will he really buy anyone else?

And the one thing that frightens me about Europe is speed. When I see Real madrid playing . . .

Good point. And in reality, the more you fiddle with something the more unstable it becomes. That said, if Blanc leaves we will have to have two solid central defenders ready to go. RB is also a concern. Hopefully SAF will address the situation for the long term.

how much do milan want for contra?

the other defenders will not be cheap ..

hofland 15m
tudor 15-20m
bridge 5-10m
emerton 10m

He cost them about 6mil in the summer, so they would probably let him go for that amount.

id settle for bridge, hofland, mexes and cisse as summer signings ...

Valencia's Ayala troubled over his future

MADRID, February 21 (DS) - Valencia CF Argentinean defender Roberto Fabian Ayala is troubled over his future fate in the club. Yesterday the Argentinean player revealed in his interview to Spanish newspaper "AS", he is going to consider Manchester United's last month's bid and looks forward to decisive steps from his club's officials: either to accept United's bid or improve the conditions of his current contract.
===================

So, we made a bid then?

i'd like to see hofland first then if possible pry tudor from juve. he can play two or three spots on the team. ayala is about 5'9" , i'd like to see bigger cb's. (only opinion). bou i think o'shea can show for the team and hopefully brown can rebound and find his form again.
mexes is one for the future as is cisse , watched both on tv from U21 champ.
