How long will it take for United to reclaim their former glory?

I watched Barcelona's last couple of games and it seems they are back on track after their recent struggles. This makes me wonder when United will become a real team again. Its been over a decade since Fergie retired and the club still seems to be searching for its identity. What will it take and how long will it take for United to reclaim their former glory if we ever do?

I've been saying 2028 for the last 3 years. It will be embarrassing being wrong. I'm never wrong. Ever.

I'm afraid we won't. We're still stuck with the Glazers, and INEOS are proving to more inept than feared.

It will take us getting a manager in the mold of Klopp to see a resurgence like Liverpool during his tenure - and it has to happen before we become so bad and irrelevant that our global brand and fan will no longer be able to finance our constant splurges on (useless) transfers.

The alternative is probably a successful takeover from a sheikh or a sugar daddy.

Uniteds successful periods are basically 2 managers. Outside of that is long periods of very little.

Somehow united have to attract the very best manager in the land and hope he's strong enough to sort out what exactly is the problem in the greater organisation.

As a club we still lack a plan, have no direction and employ the wrong people. Until we change all that, there will be no stability.

Without stability we won't have a solid baseline to build from. It is pointless to dream about glory in the future under the given circumstances. It's bordering delusional thinking. We're in chaos.

Agreed. We need a very good manager to replace EtH.

Not in the next 15 years. Football has simply changed and we're as close to reclaim our former glory as Brentford are to become one of the greatest clubs ever.

Most people don’t realise that, other than Busby and Fergie, this is actually normal for us. Under Fergie the club didn’t modernise to move on from the day he retired and paying for it dearly now. It’ll be a Liverpool like 30 year wait for the next title unfortunately.

I know you likely don’t mean Klopp specifically, but for the sake of argument do you think his ‘needs’ as a manager would preclude him from accepting the Utd job. He clearly wants to do things his way, not anyone else’s.

I just think that your average ‘genius’ manager, one who can come in and turn things around, is also the kind of person who needs complete control. I guess I’m saying Utd need to be careful not to try to be all things, they have to pick a route to success and stick with it.

Well, if there is one club that could ruin a manager like Klopp, it would probably be United.

But Klopp never had full control. His succesful squads were built by Christian Heidel (Mainz), Michael Zorc (Dortmund) and Michael Edwards (Liverpool). So full control for the manager is not really necessary as proven by this example.

Not too long. A smashing 1-0 win against Leicester in the next penultimate efl cup tie and we've turned the corner towards glory yet again.

It would take relegation for our global brand to be irrelevant. The big question is do you think that relegation is now within the realms of possibility?

It shows how quickly football can get away from you when you make bad decisions. I reckon we’re another 5 years from being back competing for league titles

Do you think Liverpool’s set up is comparable to Utd’s ‘best in class’ philosophy, though? Saying ‘complete control’ was the wrong term, as that is simply impossible, but the general point still stands. Klopp was more than a coach, and to me it looks like Utd are setting up with various divisions of responsibility, one of which is a coach rather than a manager.

Another 10 years by the looks of it. There's no stopping this freefall. Every year we get worse and worse.

It's a bottomless pit.

As soon as we hire a competent manager we’ll be back again competing. We have the money to buy the players, just a manager to get them playing well.

You want a prediction about the weather United reclaiming their former glory? you're asking the wrong Phil forum. I'll give you a winter prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life.

I do think that in principle, yes. Klopp was just a coach who had charisma which makes him appear bigger than his actual role was.

When we get a new manager and a new midfield unfortunately and when Bruno leaves . Our midfield is absolutely shocking. TBH our forward line and back line is not much better.

Need to build the team around Yoro, Garnacho, Hojlund, Diallo and just get rid of the rest.

Technically our players are abysmal.

Barcelona and Real are too big to drop off, mainly in part due to the league. EPL has too many competitive teams in it for Utd to bounce back like Barca are doing. I don't think we'll ever return to a situation like we had under SAF.
