How good was David Trezeguet?

Watched a video of all his CL goals and it got me thinking, where does he rank among the strikers at that time? world class?

He was top class but I think he peaked early. Not as talented as Anelka and Henry but he was prolific. Crazy to think that France had such a talented batch of strikers coming through at the same time.

He scored that goal. That's all that matters.
But that being said, I'd rank him alongside Falcao, Forlan, Van Nistelroy, Shearer, Inzaghi... Elite goalscorer but not complete enough to have a shot at world class status

Shearer not world class? How about Henry? Where do you rank him?

Henry is the premier leagues greatest player. ....Shearer was world class, the problem is people remember 2002 Shearer moreso than 1995 Shearer. Henry, Ronaldo (R9) and Suarez are the greatest strikers I've seen; ahead of the likes of other world class strikers like Batistuta, Aguero, Sheva, Totti and Lewandowski

I'll remember him for missing pens in two finals.
2005 CL final against Milan and then in 2006 for France.

Top class finisher, but all-round game wasn't compelling enough to be considered 'world-class' for me. With world-class players around him like Zidane and Henry he could look superb as the penalty-box converter of everything they created. But otherwise he could go missing without regular service. In his defence he was Serie A footballer of the year in 2001/02, but he never quite packaged that form over a solid 3-5 year period in the way that the other top strikers of his generation did. Off the top of my head I'd take Raul, Vieri, Crespo, RVN, Henry, Shevchenko, Makaay and Ronaldo ahead of him at that stage, so it's difficult to bracket him as world class when there were so many ahead of him.

Not as talented as Anelka... but more consistent (and less of a twunt)

Better finisher than Anelka or Henry... but Henry was a far better player than either

Would have done well in pretty much any league and had a ratio of better than a goal every other game for most of his career which pre messi/Ronaldo was the benchmark of a top centreforward

I would include Batistua circa 1999-2001 was also better than him, you can also argue Michael Owen too was better in that period.

Man, there were so many good strikers in 2000s, even though Trezeguet wasn't among the top 10 in that period, he was still superb player with elite finishing ability if properly serviced.

Now, we there is lack of strikers who can give you a 20-25 for few years.

I always remember Roy Keane talking about Giovanne Elber and calling him "quality, but not top quality", I'd put Trezeguet around there too. He'd get you goals but you'd want him paired with Del Piero who had a better all-round game. Of the top strikers of that era he'd be on the lower end of the list of those who could adapt to modern football.

It’s crazy when you consider the quality of the defenders then too, I’m sure there is a bit of nostalgia in this but the likes of Maldini, Nesta and Stam seemed much more special than those of today.

Always expected him to sign for Arsenal but looking back he wasnt rounded enough to be a Wenger striker

One of the last players that were from the breed of pure poachers. Didn't add that much to the team game, but giving him service inside the box or opening gaps for middle shooting would make him shine.

All of the above were world class. Shearer most of all.
And forlan had everything going for him in terms of his overall game.

He was an excellent goalscorer but of the sort where, if you had one of the best teams around, he'd fall between two stools of being too good to replace and at the same time thinking 'shouldn't we have someone just one notch better up front?'

Think perception was he never did enough in big games but then you could say the same about Henry. In Serie A he scored loads anyway, not sure his CL record was all that.

That golden goal winner in 2000 euros final was beautiful technique though. Cross from Pires was going slightly behind him yet he manages to shift and caught it on the volley and unsaveable in the top corner.

He was decent for a while. I rated him probably at Kluivert or Crespo level.

Flattered to decieve. Aside from that goal, I always got the impression that he only scored when it didn't matter- the type to score goals no. 3 and 5 in a 6-0 win.

An excellent finisher.
His all round game from what I remember was pretty average though...

We were heavily linked to him after the Van Nistelrooy deal broke down in the Spring of 2000.

I did say they were all Elite goalscorer. My definition of world class is probably not yours. I call world class a player who is the best in the world in his position during a season. In the Shearer era, Romario, Ronaldo were better. It's not a knock on Shearer.

A top class finisher with deadly composure. In France he'll forever be remembered for his golden goal in the Euro 2000 final, it was a difficult shot but we all knew it was going in because he was Trezeguet and he was deadly. But he was kind of one-dimensional, a pure scorer that didnt contribute much outside of goals. Certainly not as good as Henry, but I've always felt "safer" with Trezeguet upfront, because I knew he'd make the most of any chance he'd get.

Really good striker. For some reason it reminds me of school, though. There was this cocky lad called Trevor who fancied himself as a sharp striker for the school team and for some reason everyone was bantering him with the name David Trevisgay.

Proper purile late 90's bullshit.

I thought he was good, not elite but a good striker. Saying that, I knew he would miss the penalty in the World Cup final.

We used to call these type of players, Dugachis(waste). In the honor of the great Dugarry.

He had the bare minimum level of performance to be called an excellent striker. In the same Tier as Vieri, Morientes, RVN and Crespo. A level below Henry, Raul, Del Piero, Rooney and Shearer.

Vieri was several levels above Trezeguet as a player. I'd have RVN above him too.

Both Shearer and Van Nistelrooy were absolutely world class.

Ronaldo is the premier leagues greatest ever player. I dislike the guy with a passion but lets be honest, he did way more in less time than Henry did.

Winning goal at Euro 2000 was a classic

Not to mention when he broke my heart as a ten year old when he crash-bang-walloped a shot in against us to knock us out of the Champions League

I don't count Ronaldo as a striker. I mentioned R9. I think R9 is better than Henry clearly. However, the R9 I watched, from 02 - 06 was not as good as the 90s R9. So when I compare them, I'd take Henry over that version

Vieri was several levels above Trezeguet as a player. I'd have RVN above him too.
I remember Vieri as a big-game flop and a small team destroyer. He also had injury issues during his peak.
I know this is a United forum but RvN is hugely overrated here. There is nothing that RvN did which Trezeguet could not do - some things better, some things worse but overall the same impact.

Edit: RvN peak (Man Utd): 95 league goals in 150 games
Trezeguet peak (Juve before relegation): 95 goals in 151 games
