How good is Chris Smalling?

Does his job, makes Cazorla look like a girl all while posing for a photo. Respect.

:D

Defensively really good but every time he tries to cross the ball something dies inside me.

Top performance from him. Probably the best I've seen since he joined us. But yes, he's no Becks on the crosses.

I don't think he has the technique to be a right back....maybe he is too tall for that role.

He had probably his best game at right back.

The guy is just not physically equipped to be a fullback. He's too big and lacks balance and finesse on the flanks. Much prefer Valencia in that role if Rafael is injured.

He's not a right back, but he's not ready to play in central midfield for United just yet. I prefer he melts in with time. Next season he will probably get to take a bigger role.

Absolutely imperious today. Made a number of key tackles and interceptions, but I'm just always astounded by his aerial prowess. Of course, he has plenty of height which will only enhance his chances of winning a header, but he is so dominant and you fancy his chances of winning aerial duels against anyone.

I was saying to my dad and brother during the match, that he really should be more of a threat from set-pieces and corners in the opposition box. He is consistently dominant defensively and just needs to be a bit more imposing and have a bit more composure (as seen when he did have a goal-scoring opportunity).

Really pleased with the progress of not just Smalling, but Evans and Jones also in recent weeks.

Good point. Hopefully that's the next step for him. Really start chipping in with goals for us.

Brilliant yesterday. Seems intelligent, with a good understanding of the game. Injuries haven't helped so lets see a change in fortune in that regard.

Touch of a 90's Serie A defender about him.

Defensively excellent. Offensively gash.

Don't understand why Fabio isn't used there when Rafael is injured. There should be some kind of rule where at least 1 da Silva is in the starting 11...

He should be one of England's starting centrebacks at the World Cup. Jagielka and Cahill as a partnership just doesn't inspire any confidence at all against the big teams

He did brilliantly yesterday. Seems to be more vocal this season too which is great to see.

Still think he's better at CB than RB though.

I said this in the Newbs not too long ago and I still believe it now. I think Roy could do worse than actually fast tracking both Smalling and Jones as our starting pair, irrespective of their lack of game time at centre half for us. Hopefully, they will be our future partnership anyway, so why not throw them in instead of delaying the inevitable. Cahill or Jagielka seem to play out of necessity and lack of options rather than their own brilliance, and I'm sure Roy would sooner field the former pair if he felt that they were getting enough games.

Hopefully they start against Chile, at least.

I actually made him my man of the match. Yes he didnt cross the ball well, but he made some excellent runs. Put in some very good blocks on the arsenal players. With a little more composure he could have eased all our nerves and scored. All in all i was very impressed with him on the day.

Does anyone else feel he has the same aerial presence as Vidic? He's fecking brilliant at heading, defensively I'd say he's one of our best and very good offensively too. I just wish we could play him more in the middle than a cover for Rafael.

Stupid foul at the end to give away that free. Shepherd the man down the line ffs. Shite passing, shite control, should never play at right back
Monster of a defender but being so bad on the ball might harm his chances of a great career here.

Strong defender, poor on the ball, definitely an issue when we rely on our full backs a lot in attack. Think we need to use him more exclusively at centre back unless its a particularly easy game.

As has been said. He's a centre back. We need Rafael back desperately or at least play Valencia with Nani ahead of him.

A club like United need two proper right backs. Smalling/Jones/Valencia should stick to their proper positions.

It's like playing with 10 men when we have the ball.

Plus he's cost us goals this season.

So if he's not going to be a defensive wall, and he might as well not be on the pitch attacking, why are we praising him?

I still think he's the best defender out of the three younger ones and think he has massive potential as a centre-back.

Should never play full-back again though. I'd much rather see Valencia there than him if Fabio isn't an option. We really miss Rafael don't we?

Great defender and a travesty to play him at right back. If anything, Jonny Evans should be shuttled out wide. He is good for at least 1 major mistake a game and was completely beaten by frazier Campbell.

Smalling needs to improve his distribution and obviously he is not comfortable at fullback. Gave away a silly freekick which led to their equalizer. Totally unnecessary and you have to think its either down to fatigue or unfamiliarity with the position.

His passing is just so so bad. Its like his feet move faster than his brain. Something like what happens to Welbeck in an attacking situation.

Do you think that Smalling would've been beaten for pace against Campbell? I don't...

Fabio should be playing right back and Smalling should play CB against Leverkusen. He's a beast in the air!
