a) Has anyone heard of them?

b) Are they a religion?

c) How many Reds in your country?

ENGLAND:

a) Everyone

b) Yes

c) Estimated at 3 million.

Denmark:

a) Everyone
b) For some yes
c) Dont know, but it is probably the most popular foreign club.

Croatia a)many of us b)no c)hard to say,but I know few

Canada:
1)Most people at some point or another
2)To some of us, but in large , no
3)I'd say a fair amount, maybe 500k?

1)yes ( very few)

or, perhaps:
1) possibly, but not during gridiron football season
2) In every country, "football" is the religion. In the US, the game is called "soccer"--not even an obscure cult.
3)Out of a population of around 280 million, you couldn't fill a decent high school stadium with the true (non-tourist) fans.

France
1) Yes, although you can always find people who never open a newspaper or watch TV

2) A religion ? No.

3) Hard to estimate, but the most popular foreign club just after Real according to a pool, although the media tend to talk more about Arsenal now :( I think Manchester has become popular here because of Eric Cantona. BTW a French journalist has written a book entitled "Manchester memories". He's a big fan of Eric Cantona.

And there a new sports channel that broadcasts most of the United games...

Taiwan
1)Not many, Beckham is much more famous than United
2)To those who love United whole hearted, Yes. But the rest, I don't think so.
3)I think......maybe a few hundred..hopefully..

Welcome to the Caf hujak... good to see a fellow countryman on here... :)

- Just a little correction/adition:

c) 3500 registered members of the official fanclub... but then, of course, there's all the glory-hunters, new fans etc... Maybe it could really make 10.000 fans in the end I guess (not all very loyal though)

España:

A) Has anyone heard of them? Of course, they are shit scared of playing us, and celebrate big style when they beat us.

B) Are they a religion? No, not at all, but the Spanish football fans have a funny trait of always wanting to know what is going on in and around our club. I know one bloke that even knew the score against Pompey 5 minutes after the game the other day, and he also knew that they were the leaders of the 1st Div. All this without the game being covered on TV or Radio nor any build up in the press.

C) How many Reds in your country? Mmmmm, with all the ex-pats here, and the amount of reds that were in the main stand in Mestalla the last time United played there, I would say at least 70,000. Not bad for a country that has such teams as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Germany

a) Yup

b) To some, yeah, but most Germans follow German clubs. Most Germans are ABUs when it comes to English football, but most do have respect for us and we get more coverage than any other English club. Most German people think the vermin are the club in England tho ...

c) Hard to estimate ... 50-100k

In Mauritius,

(a) everyone of 1.2 million people have heard of them.

(b) yes they are a religion.

(c) My estimate is about half the population, maybe more. The rest being Liverpool fans.

Hong Kong:

a)Everyone

b)Yes - to a certain extent

c)90% of all football fans

Expanding on what Cal rightly says to take in the whole of China now we are just an economic enclave:

a./ Anyone who knows what a football is from Shanghai to Shenzhen or from Tibet to Tsientsin knows of Manchester United. Bobby Charlton is still the only English phrase known by many although David Beckham is rapidly closing in.

b./ Whilst religion is frowned upon, United are welcomed with open arms. Could be the red shirts, the team spirit or just the Beckham duvets but there's a hell of a lot of converts for a secular country.

c./ Conservative estimates put the number of die hard fans at between 10 & 20 million. The TV audience in China alone for Rio's debut against Ajax was 30 million!!! Why do you think we play so many early kick offs these days.

America:

a) Some, but not a great deal. Football is behind NFL, MLB, NFL, Tennis and possibly Golf and Ice Hockey too.

b) Not by a long way, apart from those (mostly immigrants from England) who continue to fly the flag.

c) Difficult to say, although it's increasing and I expect more will get in to it after the team comes for their tour.

United States (I figure this will differ depending on where in the country we are)

1. No. "Soccer" is the sport for the kids who aren't big or "good" enough for gridiron football. I personally knew one family from Manchester, they were the only Reds I've ever known personally.

2. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> Nope. Most people wouldn't know what you mean by that.

3. The few that do know about football are either pool fans because of mickey owen ('98 World Cup), or arse fans because they won the title from United last year.

Ok ... a bit surprise to have seen no one from S'pore bothered to give some hints here so I would just add this:

(a) Yes you bet.

(b) For most of the Man United fans - YES it is!! One might have taken it lightly before but once you started to get serious teasing from all the ABU around you ( ie. mostly Scoursers, the rest Arse, Bar-Codes & HotSpurs mostly ) - then the feeling will get stronger and stronger ... Self-defensive is just natural behavior ... and it grows to become "religion" sometimes when feeling get so strong. ;)

(c) Soccer being the most popular sports on the island currently - I would say at least 2mil should be soccer fans. Among which - Man Utd fans and the Scousers should split at least 60% of it while the remainings supporting the likes of again, Arse, Bar-Codes or HotSpurs mainly.

When considering the statistics for Malaysia it would help greatly if you could divide the percentages to indicate how many orthodox United fans there are in the Pjaya mold, and how many radical fundamentalist's like Itchk who would have the team flogged and the back four executed every time we concede a corner ;)

Malaysia:

1) everyone has

2) among the fans, yes

3) at least a million though there are more liverpool fans.

4) fans like pjaya are fewer in number than fans like itch. probably about 30-40%

Ireland

1)Everyone has heard about them, even the deaf(my deaf cousin is a huge fan!!)

2) Yes they are a religion here

3) The country is split between Utd/Celtic/Liverpool with United being at least 50%.

Norway:

1) Everyone not living under a rock know about ManUtd

2) For quite a few thousand people; yes.

3) 30 000 members in the supporter's club, probably around 50 000 overall

INDIA

1)Yes so many present generation youngsters are
charmed by united..

2)No..

Some of us fortunate enough ..had loved football, visited OT for more than a decade. So we know how much Man Utd means to us.

Even before five years there was
no wave..Now it has changed a lot.. many youngsters are following our team on televison admiring our players but still a long way to go...

3)million nearly ....
(i think its small in a 1 billion population)

That's MUSCSB I pressume... ;) - In that case there's more like 23000 members... from all Scandinavia that is... Norway has a big part in it though with around 18000 members... (not as big as you thought, ey? ;) )

Happy b-day though ;)

Hungary:

a)Millions. /In hungary people like football so much./
b)No.
c)One of the most popular foreign club. (Real, Barca, Milan, Juve, Roma, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern, Ajax etc.)

Feck, I forgot you other cnuts were included as well...

Still don't think MUSCSB have much more than 50% of Norwegian supporters among their members. None of the United supporters I know are members anymore...

cheers! quite true spinoza ;)

if my memory didn't fail me..it's estimated that around 2.3million follows EPL closely (excluding those watched the game at food stalls) and united supporters made up of 40%.

The FTC supporters i saw loved rioting but not football.

a) English football is mentioned in every newspaper sports section published in Iceland and Man Utd matches are shown on the telly 2-3 times a month (rest is available at pubs) so you cannot avoid hearing Man Utd mentioned at least once in our average Icelandic life...

b) As far as watching every game available on TV or at the Pub and following their news every day can be called religion... yes

c) Around 1500 members in the supporters club last time I heard.. and I think that doubling that number isn't far off... so my guess is 3000.

I understand them in some way... I think it has grown too big to be a 'good club'...

For the numbers.... <a href="http://united.no/cgi/b2.pl56?path=/muscsb/faq&file=medlemstall-01.xml" target="_blank">check this! :) </a>

Hmm... better add another half a mill to that then. My favourite food stall was always crowded on United match nights. I could never see the TV properly.

When I was in Ireland I thought there were quite a lot of Leeds fans as well as United and Liverpool.

A lot more than there are in Manchester, that's for sure.

Thats because those dirty buggers support the only team in Manchester - City! Totally unlike us Fordians. ;)
