He got it pretty bad tbh. It's easy to forget that the Internet and social media were in their infancy, so the paparazzi really went for him.
However, what I didn't know at the time but came out in the first series of his new Netflix documentary, was the Posh literally told him before kick-off she was pregnant. Personally, I think that was a pretty selfish and sh*tty thing to do on the cusp of what was then, probably the biggest game of his career.
Even my wife (who's not really into football) liked the documentary but commented she didn't like Posh too much as she's very 'me me me' and thought it the wrong thing to do before a game. A very selfish act she said, and no wonder Beckhams head was all over the place going out the tunnel. That's the sort of thing you tell someone after the match.
Although Hoddle didn't handle it great, he probably wasn't wrong when he said David's head wasn't really on it. But I don't blame Beckham for that, I blame his Mrs.
Hardly anyone knew she had rung him to say that at the time. Had they done they might have given him a bit more slack. Its telling that when Neville is asked wether it was a good idea to tell him he was a bit reluctant to say what he really thought.
