Homefront (360, PC, PS3)

My flatmate's just bought this...It's Hilarious.. It's like a Tea-Party Republican's hallucinatory wet dream nightmare wish fulfilment fantasy (if such a thing makes any sense at all) ...Basically, ridiculously cartoon evil savage 'Red' enemies (actually dressed in red, or reddish tinted uniforms) invade the US, preying on the very worst Beckian American Communist paranoia, which of course means our heroes have to fight back against them evil Korean sons of bitches and win the day..etc etc....Despite the ludicrous premise of North Korea invading the US, the whole thing is made even sillier by the fact that our heroes on the run live in a semi-idyllic self sufficient commune, without even the smallest hint of irony or self awareness, lending yet more credence to the theory that most Gun-Ho Americans (and certainly the people who made this game) don't actually know what on earth Communism is.

It certainly all seemed far less silly when it was just the Rooskies...

That said...I'm only a couple of hours in....Still, so far deserves a massive

I nearly said fail then and I don't do that.

Its not North Korea, It is global superpower which controls most of Asia.

You need to read all the newspaper clippings and allow yourself to enjoy some Fiction. The premise is much less silly as Aliens, Nano suits etc.... but the idea is an alternate reality so it needs to actually be a bit different from Reality.

I'm sold on the story to be fair though, love it.

Homefront is set in a near future America in 2027 when a nuclear-armed Korean People's Army invades the USA. The game is written by John Milius, who co-wrote Apocalypse Now and wrote/directed Red Dawn. The beginning gameplay is reportedly set in Montrose, Colorado.[6]
One of the major portions of the story arc is built around not only the growth of the North Korean forces over the years leading to the year 2027 (the year in which the game takes place), but also the economic downfall of the United States of America, and the unrest that seems to grip the nation before the invasion

The entire intro plot is massively focused on North Korea and it even mentions and depicts Kim_Jong-un numerous times. The "global superpower" you mention is a DPR lead one. Very odd thing to deny.

Of course it's fiction. But it's Glenn Beckian wet dream fan-fiction (IMO). It's not the unbelieveability I find hilarious, yeah it's easily more plausible than Bioshock, it's just the sillyness of a game actually being based on such a stereotypical US right wing paranoid concern and being depicted so straight faced...It's the kind of thing I'd expect to be on a Tea-Party Parody website as a flash game "The Commies are in your back yard, take down them Red menace sons of bitches with your pump action double barrelled shot gun!!"...And they actualy made a proper game out of it. It's quite funny...To me at any rate.

I also find the idea of fighting the evil communists whilst living in a self sufficient commune with your comrades rather amusing. That could be a deliberate ironic twist for all I know.

But hey, horses for courses. And there could well be some really good profound twist to it, I dunno...These are just my initial impressions.

I've not played it, but it simply sounds to me as if it's based in an alternative reality, not really that much different to say Resistance. Difference with Resistance is that it involves an alien race. World War II however never happened.

Still don't think you have grasped the concept.

Why are they living in a commy commune? there actualy just in hiding from a oppressive regime.

There not, Its not north Korea mate, it is an asian block which include Japan, South korea, Vietnam, and many others. North korea is leading and kim is the leader but it is made up of several countries.

The story hardly fits a tea party wet dream either, Capitalist america has been brought to its knees by economic downturn and hugely increasing oil costs.

We rarely this kind of effort in games, makes a nice change to me.

Like you say though, horses for courses.

OK, this is an incredibly silly thing to be haggling over, but this is like claiming Nazi Germany wasn't really anything to do with Germany, it was the Austrians and Poles too..

From the intro Vid, North Korea invades the south to force a unification and Japan surrenders after the US withdraws and becomes a subordinate vassel state....it's not an axis of powers, it's a North Korean empire build. As you said, Kim is the leader...It's the bloody Red Menace!

It's set in the future where Korea has been unified and taken Japan before invading America. It's obviously not particularly plausible but neither are the vast majority of games/films, so I'm not so sure people are singling it out.

It's not the silliest game ever made by a long stretch, I just find it an inherently amusing thing...It could be just me. So far though, I don't see a huge swell of people rushing to acclaim it a masterpiece. It's basically DFresh talking to himself in this thread so far.

none of that is true. Its was a peaceful unification, Then Korea attacks Japan because of Japanese racial motivated murder of 10,000 koreans. no mention of any vassel. Then other countries join the Union.

Space program is then attempted using GPS replacement as a cover for a huge EMP attack and then invasion of USA. Who was already in a state of anarchy of its own making through its economic collapse.

In Resistance Fall of Man, the Nazis never existed. Thus the alternative reality.

The alternate history of the Resistance series diverges from current history primarily at the end of World War I, leading to a prosperous European alliance and worldwide peace, preventing the Great Depression, the rise of the Nazis in Germany, and World War II, but also leading to the rise of an isolationist Russian Empire, one that is still under Tsarist rule as Lenin's revolution was crushed........

I see no problems with games doing this type of thing.

Yep, that's enough for some people.

Advertising dollars have had some in pact on these reviews no doubt. That or plain loyalty for playing a game to near death.

So one commented if it was called COD:Homefront it would have much higher scores across the bored.

To be fair this game was advertised like mad all over the web. All the big gaming sites had Homefront themes for the last few weeks, and you couldn't watch a youtube video without having to watch that 30 second trailer. If anything it was over-marketted, so you can't really say reviewers gave a mediocre score because of a lack of advertising.

But I'd agree, I'm not one to listen to reviewers since in they do sometimes get it wrong. One of my 2010 GOTY was given a 2/10 by IGN...I'm just glad I didn't follow their lead since I wouldn't have discovered the gem. Edge also seem to have lost it in recent years with some silly reviews (10/10 for Halo 3 and GTA IV )

But that game isn't pandering to the wild paranoid conspiracies of existing nut jobs....That's what I find funny about this game. It's like a parody game Rush Limbaugh would come up with.

I'm not crying evil or anything, I just find it funny and faintly ridiculous. "The commie's are coming"

As I've said, I've not played it, but it's interesting to see how people can have such differing views on something.

Of course it's fiction. But that doesn't make it exempt from being amusingly ridiculous fiction.

What was that?

Deadly Premonition, was meaning to make a thread about it but don't think it'll warrant much attention.

Terrific game, very flawed but one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a video game.

What a bastard "Heartlands" is on guerilla.

Some of the early levels look a bit average graphically but it seems to pick up nicely in the later chapters. Impressive single player and longer than people mentioned playing on the hardest level.

I doff my cap to anyone who can play thru this one on guerilla in 4-5 hours.

Have to say i completed this.... So much potential. I reckon this game was a taster to test the reception it gets. Very CODlike in every way. I did enjoy it and was impressed with the AI of enemies too who dont just run n duck and cover, they can be unpredictable.
One thing grates me is online though. Severe freeze issues when waiting for a game and then having to turn PS3 off

Quite enjoying this, not done to much single player yet just getting into Chapter2. MP though is very enjoyable, starting to use the purchases more etc. Only problem is it won't let me into games sometimes, just says something about no beacon error.

Just completed it on guerilla.....fecking hell some truly annoying bits!! Continuously re-spawning enemies?!? And for those that have played the game, I did very last bit on mission 5 (which was fecking hard!!) and it froze on me - the pad almost was thrown at the TV.

Overall it was pretty enjoyable, if a little too familiar. Definitely got better as the game went on and the last level was especially great!

But, I'll be trading it on for Crysis 2 on Friday. If people are still on the MP in a few months, I might pick it up again when it goes down in price but I'd imagine it'll be abandoned before long.

Yeah hard SP and has a few cracking levels towards the end.

Multiplayer is fantastic but the server issues may destroy it. I play in a group most nights and we cannot get into games together.

Will get Crysis because I am gfx whore but I hope they get the servers sorted on this, because long run I think if offers more than any other console shooter out now.

I thought that one of the big selling points of this game was dedicated servers for all platforms?

Yeah they work really well when you join on you own. Try to party up though and it goes tits up. Shame cause the game is lag free.

I'm hardly on the payroll because i enjoy the game, it's the whole point of gaming.

Help is on the way for disgruntled Homefront players. THQ confirmed it has made patching the persistent freezing issues on the Xbox 360 number one on its to-do list, and expects to have the first of two updates submitted for Microsoft's approval within the next couple of days. The publisher said similar updates for PS3 will be made available at the same time or shortly thereafter.
“The Homefront team is finishing up our first Critical Title Update that will address the Profile Corruption issue (also known as the ‘freeze’ bug), as this is our highest priority,” reads the latest update on Homefront's website, further explaining, “We are also including a fix for multiplayer connectivity and ping time issues, where players are being sent to distant server locations at the expense of performance. We expect this update to be submitted to Microsoft really soon and we will be working with them very closely to get this approved and deployed as quickly as possible.”

The Xbox Live glitch in question has resulted in hard freezes at the THQ and Kaos Studios logo screens after starting a new game. As the bug appears to have a connection to players' profiles, THQ previously suggested owners create a new profile to at least gain access to the single-player campaign. Understandably, this has done little to appease the Homefront community.
THQ also stated its attack plan for addressing the similar issues on the PS3, pledging to release an update for Sony players as soon as it is ready. Details of the fixes for both platforms are posted as follows:
Update 1: Xbox 360 Critical Title Update
Scheduled for Microsoft Submission in the next day or two.
Fixing the Xbox Live Profile Corruption ‘Freeze’ Issue
Fix for players being matched in distant server locations
Update 2: Additional Game Issues Fixes
Playstation 3 Update will release as soon as fixes are ready.
Xbox 360 will submit as soon as Update 1 is released live.
Multiplayer Freezing (affecting X360 & PS3)
Experience and Statistics Resets (affecting X360 & PS3)
Improving Party Matchmaking & Joining with Friends (affecting X360 & PS3)
Fixing the Beacon Error (affecting X360 only)
Correcting inconsistent Leaderboards data (affecting X360 & PS3)
It's arguable Kaos Studios' decision not to conduct a public beta for the PS3 and Xbox 360 has come back to bit them in the ass. That said, even the most thorough Q&A testing can't fully replicate how a game will perform once 700,000+ online rebels get their mitts on it. Are you willing to forgive a new IP for a few (significant) launch hiccups, or are you ready to move on?

I really enjoyed the single player to this game.

The campaign though is too short.

Graphically it's not great, but gameplay and story wise it's good. Most importantly though it feels good to play.

One of the most amazing bits of the game is when you are allowed to kick a door in after 70% of the game.

Haven't tried online yet, because PSN is gay.

Played the MP demo and liked it. Picked it up pre owned today. It crashed four times in the same place in the SP campaign. Back you go, you piece of shit.

20 minutes of downloading the latest patches. Bang up job, you turds.

Oh, and a Deus Ex comparison???

Remember boys and girls, Homefront is exactly like Deus Ex.

Get out of the crack of my arse!

I said reminds me of but carry on with your shite. :wenger:

As I feared the partying up ruined this game for me. Shame cause it had potential online but the single players was a bit different although too short.

Lucky you. I didn't get past the first 10 minutes of the SP campaign. Crash, crash, crash.
