He really should be starting instead of Mata. I think Mata is an awesome squad player but he lacks that extra oumph that we need. He lacks pace, and he hardly utilizes his dribbling when in front of a player because his acceleration is so bad. Mata would have never carried the ball past three players in the middle like Miki did and open up space for his teammates to run into. Sometimes that's the difference between between winning a game or losing it.

I think Mata is only starting because of football politics and if Mourinho drops him everyone will think he's leaving and Mata might be upset.

Now that the transfer window is closing before the City game I fully expect Mkhitaryan to start and for Mata to get less game time.

But having Mata as a squad player would be fantastic for us as when Miki needs a rest he can easily slot in.

While Mkhitaryan definitely can drive the football forward in a way that Mata can't, I actually think Mata has been satisfactory in the first few matches and not the main problem point. Ultimately I feel that Mkhitaryan benefited from being subbed on at a time where most of the Hull players were tiring, which allowed him to run through them at times.

He's not going to replace Rooney as the #10 anytime soon. I am certain we are a long way from seeing that happen.

Fitness after the international break may well decide it, but what do y'all think about wide right versus City? Logically, I think Mkhitaryan starts. I haven't seen him remotely as much as I've seen Mata, but he seems to have more of the traits Mourinho likes in the tight big games. I can't help but think Mata will start though. Mourinho's consistent with personnel selection, and Mata hasn't done much wrong--even out of position.

He did that a lot for Dortmund so it's certainty not a one off. While Mata is satisfactory we shouldn't be happy with satisfactory. His lack of pace is really a problem at times when we are on the attack.

I know what you're saying when he hasn't done much wrong but he doesnt affect the game as much as I would like. We forgot about him when he came off instantly which isn't a good sign.

Mourinho not starting him is starting to get silly now in my opinion. It's obviously not a straight choice of who is better. He doesn't even particularly rate Mata. It's just like him getting sacked from United, and coincidentally turning up managing Schweinsteiger's next club. Of course, there will be questions immediately, and Jose will probably start playing him and acting like he rates him all along, but the reality is - he's already shown what he thinks. Just like he has with Mata. He didn't sign Mata for Chelsea, and as soon as he came, he got rid. Now he's not only central to his team, he's even a winger too (obviously playing him ahead of Rooney would be a step too far just to prove a point!).

For me, we all know Mata will not be in Mourinho's first team. Almost like Mkhitaryan is paying the price so Jose can show some huge faith in Mata, but Mats will eventually be out of the team. Mkhi was signed by Mourinho, Mata wasn't. Not to mention that Mkhi is obviously fecking better than him, and the team is now being held back due to politics in my opinion.

I don't think so. I think they play different roles but Mikhi suits us more right now.

I think Mkhitaryan take over the wide right position at some point this season. I'm not sure when that will be. This City match might but just a little too early from the way I read it.

He'll get his chance - I don't see what's strange about a top and established player like mata getting starts at the beginning of a long season. Micki has played well off the bench so far - we'll get to see how well he plays from the start soon enough. I half expect, unless one absolutely nails down a starting performance for a few games, to see mata, Micky and Lingard all getting plenty of game time. I think all 3 have about as much chance as each other tbh...

Did you watch the game? He injected pace into the game. He played forward passes, he made good runs, he occupied dangerous positions, he used the ball well... All off the bench, too. It's very hard to change a game off the bench, some players need to grow into the game, like Mata. He made an impact. That's about all you can ask for in a 30 minute chameo.

Your honestly clueless if you think he's like kagawa

He did more for his brief few minutes on the pitch than Rooney has done for 3 seasons though.

Micki has physicality and pace to his game. He also flourished for a very talented Shaktar team that contained Premier League shakers Willian + Fernandinho.

Micki/Kagawa is a lazy comparison.

Wow I never thought I would become one of those posters and bring something personal (although it's not imo) and er call someone out but you guys need to look at the Rooney performance thread and see who's been defending him there.

1) Defends Rooney
2) Didn't think Miki had a good cameo against Hull
3) Compares him to Kagawa
4) Hopes he can becomes a good player like he's shown to be a bad one already?? wutt

What on earth does Rooney have to do with this? What are you expecting from a 30 minute spell off the bench? A hat-trick?
The Kagawa comparison is shockingly lazy. Yes, they're both attacking players that have come from Dortmund, but Mkhitaryan is far more direct, far more powerful, faster, stronger, he's a better dribbler etc etc.

Calm down, you didn't even get the message @criticalanalysis was trying to pass.

"Calm down"
Good insight mate. I'm perfectly calm, I was responding to his reasoning behind his initial comment. Thanks for your valued contribution.
The context of the post you were responding to was used to support your opinion, not denigrate it. There's a little arrow in each quote that refers you to their original post; I suggest trying it out.

Perhaps I've missed something that everyone else has picked up on. From what I read into his second comment, he likened Kagawa to Mkhitaryan again, while again saying that Mkhitaryan wasn't particularly good off the bench. I have no idea why he's brought Rooney into it, so perhaps I've missed his point. No need to be condescending, I'm aware of the arrow function, I just have no idea how you could say his post supports my opinion.

You got the wrong message. I quoted each of you because you all quoted the same poster, whose name rhymes with mick2004.

I'm calling out that poster because he said those quite frankly ludicrous things about Miki, whilst being a staunch Rooney defender. It's obvious.

You should really calm down, the guy is actually on your side and trying to make a point supporting both your claims by calling out the other poster from the nonsense he wrote about Mhki.

Cheers lol

AHHHHHH. I owe you my deepest apologies mate. I was wondering why everyone was jumping down my neck, now I see haha. As you were!

Got nothing to do with being calm, I just made a mistake!

Playing against Czech Republic now. Got clattered by another player and was down on the floor for a bit which got me scared.

The discussion on this guy should be clear and concise . The best recognition you can get is from your fellow pros , so him being voted the best player in the bundesliga by the guys he plays against is signal enough to me that he's the real deal . He will be used properly soon enough and cement his place in the starting XI for years to come . He is as good as we all are hoping and barring a torres-esque fall from grace , hel be a Stratford end hero by the time he's done . Absolutely terrific player .

Rooney's fellow pros think he is good. So did Slippy G's.

I also think Sky are being over dramatic. Given Mhki himself is hopeful to play against Denmark, the injury shouldn't be that bad.

I bet he'll be fine for the City game.

Exactly the way I feel. If Mkhitaryan is still injured for the game against City, it will save Mourinho from having to make any excuses for leaving him out for Mata.

FFS

Clubs should be able to veto players playing in friendlies with the amount they pay them.

Our clogged up attack won't reach it's full potential until he's starting. He brings pace, creativity, vision, tenacity and he is a goal threat. We need Mkhi,Martial and Rashford/Mata behind Zlatan.

The derby is in 8 days so he should be fit. This is a far better outcome than I feared.

Personally wouldn't really want him starting in the Derby. Hopefully he can come off the bench, our attack is doing well and his injection against tired legs was a good tactical changeup. Hope he comes back ASAP but I think it is okay if he misses the derby. It is one of those games.

Hopefully this is just the club throwing a spanner of uncertainty into Pep's plans.

Just an FYI, the report the 7-10 days thing came from was from the Armenian FA site and it was saying he would miss the qualifier and said "such injuries usually require a week to 10 days to heal" (http://www.ffa.am/hy/1472844826). It didn't mention the Derby at all.

So don't think we should assume anything until he's back in Manchester, training and Jose gives an update.

How would that work though, why would Armenia play along?

It looks like he will miss Armenias WC qualifier, so he must be injured.

It could be that he's injured enough to be kept out of the Germany game, but due to be fit in time for the derby. It would make sense to exaggerate his injury a bit to keep City guessing.

Well it's possible i guess but it was apparently the Armenian FA who said he will be out for 7-10 days. So i don't see them being in on some sort of subterfuge on United's behalf to fool City. In my experience 99.9 times out of 100 when it's announced a player is injured it's usually because they are actually injured.

He needed to play these 2 internationals to get match fit. What with only playing less than 45 minutes and then missing training while recovering from injury, he's not going to be physically ready to play much part in the derby even he is over his injury by then. Shame.
